Bitcoin’s value on a balance sheet is not the same as money available to pay those bills. A company must bridge the gap with operating cash flow, financing, Bitcoin sales or borrowing against its holdings—or a combination of them.
Why holding Bitcoin does not pay a company’s bills
A Bitcoin reserve is an asset, not a payment method for ordinary expenses. A company may have substantial Bitcoin holdings and still face a cash shortage if operating receipts are insufficient and scheduled obligations come due. The value of the reserve can also fall while expenses and debt payments remain.

That distinction matters especially for miners and infrastructure operators. They have operating costs and capital requirements alongside their Bitcoin holdings. MARA Holdings, a Bitcoin mining and digital-infrastructure company, warned in its 2025 Form 10-K: “Since we currently do not generate significant revenue from other business activities, a prolonged downturn in bitcoin’s price could make it difficult to cover operational expenses, service debt or fund strategic initiatives.” MARA Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K
Four figures to separate when assessing liquidity
It is easy to confuse a large reserve with a large cash cushion. To understand a company’s ability to meet near-term needs, distinguish these measures:

- Bitcoin reserve value: the reported value of Bitcoin holdings on a particular date. It can change with the market price and may not represent immediately spendable funds.
- Available cash: cash the company can use to pay expenses, subject to any restrictions disclosed in its filings.
- Financing capacity: possible proceeds from equity issuance or borrowing. Capacity is not cash already on hand, and access may depend on market conditions.
- Cash needs and obligations: operating expenses, capital spending, debt service, and other claims due on a schedule.
Borrowing against Bitcoin can raise cash while adding financing risk; selling Bitcoin turns part of the reserve into cash but reduces the holdings. Issuing shares may provide funds without selling Bitcoin, but dilutes existing shareholders. Debt provides cash now while adding repayment obligations. Which option is workable depends on the company’s own finances and market access.
How MARA’s disclosures show the trade-offs
MARA’s reported figures illustrate why the dates and categories matter. They are company-specific snapshots, not sector averages or a substitute for checking the latest filing.

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, MARA reported repurchasing approximately $367.5 million of March 2030 notes and $633.4 million of June 2031 notes. The company’s 2026 Form 10-Q describes its cash, financing, Bitcoin monetization, and debt-management activity. Its quarterly filing for September 30, 2025 reports the historical cash, digital-asset, and ATM figures above. Neither filing’s snapshot should be treated as a current balance beyond its stated date.
“Hold forever” can be a policy, not a promise
MARA’s policy changed over time. Its 2024 annual report said it adopted a full holding, or “HODL,” approach on July 25, 2024, retaining all Bitcoin mined and allowing strategic open-market purchases. MARA Holdings’ 2024 Form 10-K

In its 2025 annual report, MARA said it later permitted sales of Bitcoin generated from operations to support business needs. In its 2026 filing, it said the strategy had expanded to allow sales of Bitcoin already held on its balance sheet. MARA Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K and 2026 Form 10-Q
This is one company’s dated policy evolution, not evidence that every Bitcoin treasury company will sell. A stated holding strategy describes management policy at a point in time; it does not remove the need to fund expenses or guarantee that the policy will never change.

Why company types are not interchangeable
A company whose principal strategy is accumulating Bitcoin through capital markets faces a different cash-flow profile from a miner or infrastructure operator with ongoing business costs. The Associated Press reported that Strategy began buying Bitcoin with reserve cash in 2020 and later used stock sales and debt to continue expanding its holdings. MARA’s filings connect its liquidity to mining and infrastructure operations, financing, capital needs, and Bitcoin holdings. Comparing firms requires looking at each company’s own disclosures rather than treating one company’s figures as typical.

What to check when judging a company’s ability to hold
A useful assessment starts with whether the company can meet scheduled cash needs without relying on a favorable Bitcoin price or ready access to capital markets. Review its filings for:
- Recurring operating cash flow, operating expenses, and cash burn.
- Unrestricted cash, Bitcoin holdings, and any restricted assets—kept in separate categories.
- Debt principal and maturities, interest or coupon costs, and any recent repurchases.
- Remaining equity-issuance capacity, alongside evidence of dependence on investor demand.
- Whether Bitcoin is pledged, lent, otherwise used to generate funds, or available for sale.
- The company’s current policy on selling reserve Bitcoin and how recently it was stated.
- Capital expenditure and other competing claims on liquidity.
A 2025 arXiv preprint abstract proposes testing disclosed company metrics against an 18-to-24-month bear-market scenario to examine whether firms could bridge it without liquidation. That range is the authors’ proposed stress-test horizon, not a demonstrated runway or survival finding for any named company. 2025 arXiv preprint abstract
The available figures here do not provide a harmonized, current comparison across the corporate Bitcoin sector. A company’s ability to hold through a downturn cannot be inferred from its Bitcoin balance alone: cash flow, upcoming obligations, financing access, and management’s willingness to sell all matter.
