What a Bitcoin block explorer can tell you
A block explorer is a search interface for information recorded on a public blockchain. Enter a txid to inspect a transaction, including its inputs and outputs, fee, fee rate and status. Blockstream says its Explorer can display transactions that are not your own, too. Blockstream’s help article explains the service.

How to track a Bitcoin transaction
- Get the txid. Copy the transaction ID from the wallet, exchange or service that sent the payment. Check that you have the full ID and that it belongs to the Bitcoin transaction you want to follow.
- Open an explorer. Search the txid in Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space. You can also use Blockchain.com Explorer, whose search accepts transaction hashes, addresses and blocks.
- Read the status. A transaction shown as unconfirmed is still in the mempool, not yet included in a block. A confirmed transaction has been included in a block.
- Check the details relevant to your question. Review the confirmation count, fee and fee rate, along with inputs and outputs. Confirm that the transaction and output match the payment you intended to check.
- Recheck later if it is pending. The mempool and fee conditions change. A displayed fee rate or estimate is a snapshot, not a promise about when a miner will include the transaction.
Why a Bitcoin transaction may be unconfirmed
Until a miner includes a transaction in a block, it remains unconfirmed in the mempool. Miners generally select higher-fee transactions sooner, according to Blockstream’s help material, but a fee display cannot guarantee a place in a particular block or a confirmation time. Mempool conditions change, so a pending transaction’s prospects can shift as other transactions arrive or are confirmed.
An explorer can show the transaction’s current status and fee information; it cannot make miners include it. If a payment is still pending, use the sending wallet or service’s guidance for that transaction before taking action. The explorer comparison does not establish one service as faster or more accurate than another.

How many confirmations are enough?
A confirmation is counted when a block includes the transaction. Each later block adds another confirmation. The right threshold depends on the recipient’s policy, the transaction’s value and the parties’ tolerance for risk.
Blockstream’s educational material describes six confirmations as a common finality threshold for many wallets and services, roughly 60 minutes using its approximate ten-minute block interval. It also says that even one confirmation provides strong assurance for typical transactions. These are general educational guidelines, not a universal acceptance rule or a guarantee; check the recipient’s requirements.

Privacy: what an explorer lookup reveals
The transaction data is public, and an explorer can display transactions that are not yours. Separately, searching a public website can disclose your lookup interest to that service. The sources reviewed do not establish a current comparative logging policy for the public explorers, so do not assume a public lookup is private.
If you need more control over where lookups go, a technically capable user can investigate running a node or self-hosting an explorer. Esplora’s documentation describes self-hosting as an option.

Using explorer data in software
Blockstream documents an Explorer API for indexed blockchain data, including UTXO, balance, mempool and fee information. Its commercial API page advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA; that figure is Blockstream’s own offer, with no year stated on the page. It applies to the commercial API offer, not the free public Explorer, and is not an independent performance measurement. Check the API’s current terms and limits before building against it. Esplora is an open-source option for technically capable users who want to investigate self-hosting rather than relying entirely on a public explorer. Whether that is appropriate depends on your infrastructure and maintenance needs.
