If Bitcoin or Ethereum has been sent to a scammer, there is no reliable way to reverse the blockchain transfer, and reporting does not guarantee a refund. Act quickly to secure any affected accounts, preserve transaction records, report the incident through official channels, and reject unsolicited offers to recover your crypto.

What “recovery” can—and cannot—mean

A Bitcoin or Ethereum transfer that has been confirmed on its network generally cannot be reversed by a bank, exchange, or regulator. The FTC says cryptocurrency sent to a scammer is generally gone; a report or transaction trace may help document an incident or support an investigation, but neither action itself returns the funds. FTC guidance on cryptocurrency and scams and its advice on avoiding cryptocurrency scams set that expectation.

“Recovery” may also mean regaining control of an exchange account or wallet that you still own. That is different from retrieving crypto already transferred to someone else. If an account is compromised, securing it promptly may prevent additional loss even if it cannot undo a completed transaction.

What to do immediately

  1. Stop contact and do not send more money

Do not pay a supposed tax, release fee, verification charge, or other amount to unlock a refund. Do not follow links or phone numbers from an unexpected recovery message. Use contact details you find independently on the exchange’s official website or app.

    • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
    • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  2. Secure accounts you still control

If an exchange account may be involved, contact the exchange through its official channel, report the incident, and follow its account-security process. Change compromised passwords, use unique passwords, and secure the email account associated with the exchange. Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to someone claiming to investigate or recover funds.

  3. Preserve records

Save transaction IDs or hashes, sending and receiving wallet addresses, dates and amounts, exchange statements or receipts, relevant messages, and the names and contact details used by the other party. Keep original messages and screenshots where possible. Share records through official reporting or exchange channels; do not publish credentials or seed phrases.

  4. Report through official channels

Use the FTC’s reporting guidance and file a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Depending on the facts, the FTC lists the CFTC, SEC, FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the exchange used to send the funds as additional reporting destinations. The appropriate regulator depends on the incident. Reporting creates a record and may assist authorities; it is not a promise of recovery.

How to assess expert help without increasing the loss

There is no verified private recovery provider identified here, so no particular company can be recommended. A blockchain-forensics or incident-response professional may be able to help organize transaction information or support an investigation, but tracing is not the same as retrieving assets. Do not treat a claimed credential, investigation, or trace as proof that funds can be returned.

If you independently consider hiring a professional, ask for written answers before sharing sensitive information or paying:

  • What specific work will be performed, and what deliverables will you receive?
  • What relevant investigative experience and independently verifiable credentials does the person or firm have?
  • What are the complete fees, payment terms, and refund conditions?
  • How will your records be stored, protected, and shared?
  • Does the provider promise a guaranteed return, demand an advance payment in cryptocurrency, gift cards, or wire transfer, or request your seed phrase or private key?

Promises of guaranteed success, requests for wallet secrets, and advance-payment demands are serious warning signs consistent with FTC recovery-scam guidance. Research any organization independently rather than relying on a link or referral supplied by an unsolicited contact. The FTC warns that people who have already been defrauded may be targeted again by supposed recovery agents; see its advice on refund and recovery scams and its alert, “Worried about crypto exchange losses? Don’t pay money for ‘help’ recovering money.”

Report a recovery scam, too

If someone contacts you claiming they can retrieve lost crypto and then asks for money or financial details, do not proceed. Report the attempted recovery scam to the FTC and your state attorney general. Keep the contact’s messages and payment instructions as part of your records, and do not send additional funds in hopes of getting the original loss back.

How common reported crypto losses are

In a June 2022 consumer alert, the FTC said more than 46,000 people had reported losing over $1 billion in cryptocurrency to scams since the start of 2021. That is a dated total of reported losses, not a count of every victim or a current estimate. FTC: “Spotting the FTC’s most reported crypto scams.”
