“Bunker mode” is a precautionary call to plan for a hypothetical AI-assisted attack on cryptocurrency signatures—not evidence that anyone can currently crack Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet keys. In its October 8, 2026 report, CoinDesk said no practical attack on either network’s wallet keys had been demonstrated. Justin Drake, an Ethereum researcher, urged the industry to “calmly start planning”; that is a call for preparation, not a reason for holders to rush funds into new wallets.

What “bunker mode” means

Drake’s phrase describes calm planning for a possible future threat to the cryptography that protects wallet signatures. CoinDesk reports that his worst-case warning put a potential timeline at “months, not years.” That is Drake’s warning, not a consensus forecast or a report of an attack already underway.

One possible preparation discussed in the report is for large holders to move gradually to fresh addresses whose public keys have not appeared onchain. It is a planning concept, not individualized financial or security advice. Moving funds also creates operational risk: a mistake during migration can cause losses.

Can AI hack Bitcoin or Ethereum wallets now?

CoinDesk reported no demonstrated practical attack that derives Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet private keys from public keys. The concern is hypothetical: AI might help discover a mathematical shortcut against the elliptic-curve signature schemes used to authorize transactions. The report does not establish that such a shortcut exists or that ordinary wallet keys are currently recoverable by AI.

How wallet signatures work

A private key authorizes a transaction. Its related public key allows the network to verify that the transaction was signed by the key holder, without revealing the private key itself. The feared shortcut would undermine that separation by making it feasible to infer the secret from public-key information.

Why address history matters

CoinDesk notes that public keys are visible for some Bitcoin addresses, and that an Ethereum account reveals its public key after it sends a transaction. This is why the warning distinguishes addresses with onchain public-key exposure from fresh addresses whose public keys have not previously appeared onchain. The report does not establish that exposure alone makes a key vulnerable to a practical attack.

How this differs from quantum-computing risk

The report distinguishes a possible AI-assisted classical attack from a quantum-computing attack. A classical shortcut would use conventional computing, potentially aided by AI, to break the mathematics behind signatures. A quantum attack would depend on quantum hardware capable of running relevant algorithms.

CoinDesk reported that one AI-assisted calculation relevant to a future quantum attack still required quantum hardware. That is not evidence that AI alone has already broken wallet signatures. The Ethereum Foundation’s reported target is to move Ethereum to quantum-resistant cryptography by December 2029; this is a target date, not a completed migration.

What the reported AI findings do—and do not—show

CoinDesk cited several developments as reasons for attention, but they do not demonstrate that Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet cryptography has been broken:

  • Mathematical work: CoinDesk reported that an unreleased OpenAI model produced 722 mathematical manuscripts after being tested on approximately 4,000 research problems. Some results had computer-checkable proofs; others were unverified and could contain errors. These figures describe reported mathematical output, not a successful wallet-key attack.
  • Bitcoin software scans: The Bitcoin Red Team reportedly scanned 390 software projects in about 27 hours and flagged nearly 5,000 possible flaws, 85 rated critical. These are scan findings, not a count of confirmed exploitable vulnerabilities in Bitcoin’s signature mathematics.
  • A firmware incident: CoinDesk reported that at least 1,367 BTC were stolen in a July 30, 2026 incident involving a Coldcard firmware bug. The maker suspected AI helped find the flaw; AI involvement was not established. A software or firmware vulnerability is distinct from breaking the cryptography that protects wallet keys.

Together, these examples concern mathematical capability, possible software flaws and a reported firmware-bug theft. They should not be collapsed into a claim that an AI system can derive private keys from exposed public keys.

Should you move crypto to a new wallet?

The report does not establish a need for an urgent migration by individual holders. Buterin cautioned against rushing, saying: “I personally have lost more money in botched migrations than I have lost in all hacks combined.” A migration can introduce mistakes even when undertaken for security reasons.

For holders, the practical takeaway is to avoid treating a worst-case warning as a confirmed emergency. Any decision to change addresses should account for the risks of sending funds incorrectly, handling keys and backups, and using unfamiliar software or procedures. The report does not endorse a particular wallet, product or migration method.
