Bishop Street Newsagency in Morley sold three Division One tickets in two weeks in 2024, according to PerthNow. The “secret” was not a way to beat the draw: the wins included syndicates, and manager Peter Nguyen called the matching-number result “just a fluke.” Lotterywest says no skill or strategy can improve the odds of a standard game.
What happened at Bishop Street Newsagency?
PerthNow reported on 6 August 2024 that Bishop Street Newsagency in Morley had sold three Division One tickets over a two-week period. The earlier two tickets were syndicates, and a subsequent Saturday Lotto win also went to a group. That is a striking cluster of wins, but the report is not an audited comparison of retailers or ticket sales.
Nguyen, the newsagency’s manager, said of two tickets with the same numbers: “It was just a fluke that we managed to get two of them.” His reported practical advice was to persevere and register tickets. Neither point amounts to a method for making a particular ticket more likely to win.
Can you improve your Saturday Lotto odds?
Lotterywest lists the chance of Division One for one standard Saturday Lotto game as 1 in 8,145,060, and the chance of winning any prize as 1 in 42. Those figures apply per standard game. Lotterywest says the odds are the same for each standard game and states: “There’s no skill or strategy that will increase your chance of winning as the chance of winning doesn’t change.”

Picking birthdays, repeating a past winner’s numbers or buying from a shop associated with recent wins does not change the draw’s probability. Lotterywest also cautions that numbers perceived as “lucky” are no more likely to be drawn today than last week. A retailer’s short run of winning tickets is not evidence that its other tickets have better odds.
What a syndicate changes—and what it doesn’t
A syndicate pools the cost of tickets among players. The combined group can cover more games than a single member might buy alone, increasing the group’s chance of a prize through the additional games. The trade-off is that any winnings are shared among the group; no individual game line becomes more likely to win.

| How you play | Games covered | Cost and prize |
|---|---|---|
| On your own | The games you personally buy | You pay their full cost and keep any prize from your ticket. |
| In a syndicate | The group’s pooled ticket games | Members share the cost and divide any winnings according to their shares. |
Lotterywest says players can buy retailer syndicate shares. For a self-organised syndicate, it describes issuing a valid share ticket to each member. Agree on each person’s share and keep the relevant ticket or share record so the group can identify who is entitled to what if a prize is won.
Why registering a ticket matters
Nguyen told PerthNow: “My only other advice is to register your ticket so you’re never at risk of losing your ticket.” Lotterywest says registering a ticket against a Lotterywest membership allows winnings to be paid automatically to that membership. Registration is a safeguard for handling a win, not a way to increase the chance of one.

Does Bishop Street deserve the ‘luckiest newsagency’ label?
The label reflects a run of reported wins, not a verified statistical ranking. PerthNow’s 2024 story gives a count over a short period; Lotterywest’s 2020 account describes another Bishop Street syndicate win. Neither source compares every WA retailer’s winning tickets against its sales or number of entries, so the available figures cannot establish that Bishop Street is statistically the state’s luckiest newsagency.
Lotterywest’s 2020 account concerned a 50-game Slikpik syndicate organised through Bishop Street Newsagency. It reported that five winners shared a $702,000 Division One prize, receiving $140,414 each. This is an example of a past syndicate win, not evidence of a store advantage or a current estimate of lottery odds.
