Birmingham City’s reported 2024/25 staff costs were about £39 million—more than Stoke City’s £33.236 million and Wrexham’s £19.95 million wage bill. Those figures are not a like-for-like measure of first-team player pay: they cover broader club payroll costs. Separate estimates for the 2025/26 season put Birmingham’s squad wage bill above Stoke’s and Wrexham’s, but those are estimates rather than filed accounts.
What Birmingham City spent on staff in 2024/25
Salary Sport’s summary of Birmingham City’s 2024/25 accounts puts the club’s staff costs at about £39 million. Its detailed account summary lists revenue of £36.453 million, while the staff-cost figure is rounded to £39 million. Salary Sport describes this payroll measure as covering players, coaches, academy staff and ground staff—not just the first team.
That is the strongest answer to “how much does Birmingham City spend on wages?” when the question means the club’s reported annual payroll costs. It should not be read as £39 million paid solely to senior players.
How Birmingham compares with Stoke and Wrexham
| Club | Period and figure | What the figure measures |
|---|---|---|
| Birmingham City | 2024/25: about £39 million | Staff costs, rounded in Salary Sport’s account summary; includes more than first-team players. |
| Stoke City | 2024/25: £33.236 million | Total staff costs in Salary Sport’s account summary. Wages and salaries alone were £29.199 million. |
| Wrexham | 2024/25: £19.95 million | BBC Sport reported a wage bill covering playing and non-playing staff and bonuses. Cover Wales’ account coverage gives £19,948,133 in staff costs and £17,587,741 in wages and salaries. |
On these reported 2024/25 figures, Birmingham’s staff costs were higher than Stoke’s by about £5.8 million and higher than Wrexham’s by about £19.1 million. The comparison is indicative rather than perfectly uniform: the sources describe the measures somewhat differently, and Birmingham’s figure is rounded.

Why the numbers do not show first-team player wages
“Wages” can refer to different things: wages and salaries alone, broader staff costs that include employer costs such as social security and pensions, or a modeled estimate of a playing squad’s payroll. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Staff costs: a club-wide payroll measure that can include players and non-playing employees, along with employer on-costs.
- Wages and salaries: a narrower accounting line. Stoke’s 2024/25 wages and salaries were £29.199 million, below its £33.236 million total staff costs.
- Squad wage estimates: third-party estimates focused on players, not figures confirmed by filed club accounts.
Wrexham’s 2024/25 accounts do not disclose individual player salaries, according to Cover Wales’ account coverage. The aggregate totals therefore cannot establish what any particular player earned.

What 2025/26 squad estimates suggest
SalaryLeaks lists estimated squad wage bills for the 2025/26 season, a different period and measure from the 2024/25 annual-account figures:
| Club | Estimated 2025/26 squad wage bill |
|---|---|
| Birmingham City | £19.6 million |
| Stoke City | £17.1 million |
| Wrexham | £16.8 million |
These estimates also place Birmingham above the other two clubs, but they are not audited payroll totals or club-confirmed figures. SalaryLeaks’ cited table does not explain how the estimates were built, so they are best treated as an indicative comparison—not as evidence of what the clubs actually reported spending.

How to read the comparison
The headline comparison is supported in direction, but the figures answer two different questions. The 2024/25 account summaries compare broad club payroll measures; the 2025/26 table compares estimated squad bills. For an accounting-based comparison, use the former and keep the scope caveat in view. For a current-season view of estimated player-squad payroll, use the latter with its uncertainty clearly stated.
