There is no reliable single winner in the available 2025/26 estimates. SalaryLeaks’ club pages put Birmingham City’s estimated first-team salaries at £21.8 million, ahead of West Brom’s £21.1 million; its separate league breakdown reverses the order, listing Birmingham at £19.6 million and West Brom at £21.4 million. These are estimates, not confirmed payroll figures.
What the 2025/26 estimates show
The answer depends on which SalaryLeaks figures are used. Its club pages show Birmingham City narrowly ahead, while its separate Championship breakdown places West Brom higher.
| Source and figure label | Birmingham City | West Brom | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| SalaryLeaks club pages: estimated first-team salaries for 2025/26 | £21.8 million | £21.1 million | Birmingham higher by £0.7 million |
| SalaryLeaks separate Championship wage-bill breakdown for 2025/26 | £19.6 million | £21.4 million | West Brom higher by £1.8 million |
The gap between these two comparisons is material: the club-page figures and the league breakdown do not agree on which club spends more. SalaryLeaks says comprehensive EFL Championship salary data is rarely published and that many figures are informed estimates based on available reporting and club wage-bill information. Neither comparison should be treated as audited confirmation of the clubs’ 2025/26 player payrolls. SalaryLeaks’ Birmingham City page, West Brom page and its Championship wage-bill breakdown do not reconcile the difference.
Why the figures are not interchangeable
The club pages also display a separate “Current Wage Bill” figure: £26.2 million for Birmingham City and £25.7 million for West Brom. Those amounts are not labelled as estimated first-team salaries, and the pages do not establish that the two measures have the same scope. They should not be substituted for the first-team salary totals or combined with the league breakdown without a clear definition.

The available pages do not explain consistently whether each total includes bonuses, employer costs or other wage-bill components. A headline figure can therefore look precise while still describing an uncertain or differently scoped estimate.
What the highest individual salary estimates say
SalaryLeaks names Carlos Vicente as Birmingham City’s highest-paid player, estimating his salary at £50,000 a week (£2.6 million annually). It names Nat Phillips as West Brom’s highest-paid player, at an estimated £40,000 a week (£2.1 million annually). These are publisher estimates, not confirmed contract terms; the available sources do not independently verify either player’s pay.

How historical financial figures compare
There is more formal financial reporting for earlier periods, but those figures measure different things and should not be used to settle the 2025/26 estimate comparison.
- West Bromwich Albion Group Limited’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 report £32.659 million in wages and salaries across the group, with an average of 100 players and coaching staff. This is group-wide accounting data for that financial year, not a 2025/26 first-team payroll. West Brom’s official financial information.
- BBC Sport reports that Birmingham City’s player wages rose 9% in 2024/25, from £35.8 million to £38.9 million. This is a historical player-wages figure, not directly comparable with SalaryLeaks’ 2025/26 estimates. BBC Sport’s report on Birmingham City’s 2024/25 results.
So, who is paying more?
On SalaryLeaks’ club-page estimate of first-team salaries, Birmingham City is slightly higher. On the same publisher’s separate league breakdown, West Brom is higher. Because the estimates conflict and their scopes are not fully reconciled, the evidence does not establish which club has the larger 2025/26 wage bill.
