What Bird proposed for Seattle
In a Seattle application, Bird said it would apply for a bike-share permit and bring “a minimum of 500 Bird Bikes” to the city alongside its e-scooters. That was a commitment in a proposal—not confirmation that the city issued a permit, that Bird deployed the bikes, or that riders could rent them.
Bird described the two vehicle types as serving different trip lengths: it positioned scooters for shorter first- and last-mile trips and e-bikes for longer journeys. That is Bird’s stated rationale, not an independently established finding about Seattle riders.
Did Bird’s Seattle bike-share launch happen?
The available reporting does not establish that Bird’s proposed bikes launched. GeekWire reported on June 11, 2026, that Lime was Seattle’s only bike- and scooter-share operator after Bird and other competitors exited earlier that year. The exact date and administrative reason for Bird’s departure are not established here.

As operator availability can change, check the city’s Scooter and Bike Share program page and current vendor tools before planning a trip. SDOT’s page, updated April 13, 2026, lists Lime real-time data feeds and says dashboard information is preliminary and subject to change.
How Seattle’s shared bike and scooter program works
Seattle has permitted free-floating bike share since 2017 and scooter share since 2020. The city describes these services as options for quick errands, connections to light rail, commute trips and other local journeys. Participating vendors operate under city permits and must host real-time data feeds.

SDOT’s May 14, 2026 safety update also describes staged 2026 deadlines for shared-micromobility operators to adopt technology that detects risky scooter behavior. This is a scooter-safety policy; it does not show that Bird’s proposed e-bikes were deployed or that Bird met any requirement.

SDOT reported that Lime gave away free helmets near Seattle Stadium as part of permit requirements. The city’s report does not establish that riders must purchase a helmet to use a shared bike or scooter. A properly fitted helmet is an optional safety accessory to consider; check current local rules and the vendor’s instructions for ride requirements.
