Biomedical engineers in the U.S. had a median annual wage of $109,370 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That is the midpoint for the BLS occupation “Bioengineers and Biomedical Engineers”—not a guaranteed starting salary or a forecast for any one person. Pay varies across the occupation, and the BLS reports a wide national wage range.
How much do biomedical engineers make?
The BLS median annual wage for bioengineers and biomedical engineers was $109,370 in May 2025. A median means half of workers in the occupation earned more and half earned less. The figure is an occupational estimate, not a promise of what a new graduate or a particular employee will earn. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook
| Measure | U.S. annual wage, May 2025 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 10th-percentile threshold | Less than $71,850 | The lowest-paid 10 percent earned below this amount. |
| Median | $109,370 | Half earned more and half earned less. |
| 90th-percentile threshold | More than $168,180 | The highest-paid 10 percent earned above this amount. |
These thresholds show that a national median cannot describe every worker’s pay. They also do not identify a typical starting salary: experience, responsibilities, location, education, and employer all matter, and the national figures do not isolate each factor.
What is the average biomedical engineer salary?
“Average” can mean different things. The current BLS headline figure is a median, not an arithmetic average. For comparison, BLS reported a national mean annual wage of $115,020 for May 2024. Because these are different measures from different reference periods, they should not be used to claim that pay rose or fell. BLS Occupational Employment and Wages, May 2024

How much do biomedical engineers make a year by industry?
BLS May 2025 median wages differ among selected industries that employ bioengineers and biomedical engineers:
| Industry | Median annual wage, May 2025 |
|---|---|
| Navigational, measuring, electromedical, and control instruments manufacturing | $130,340 |
| Research and development in the physical, engineering, and life sciences | $125,160 |
| Medical equipment and supplies manufacturing | $107,550 |
| Healthcare and social assistance | $103,170 |
| Educational services (state, local, and private) | $75,040 |
These are industry medians, not proof that an industry alone causes a pay difference. When comparing job offers, consider the specific role and responsibilities as well as industry, geography, experience, and education. The national figures here do not rank states or metropolitan areas.

What affects biomedical engineering salary?
The BLS national and industry figures establish that wages vary, but they do not quantify the separate effect of each personal or job factor. For a more meaningful comparison, look at:
- Role and responsibilities: Biomedical engineering spans work on devices, equipment, computer systems, and software; titles that include “biomedical” may describe different occupations.
- Industry and employer: The selected industry medians above provide context, but should not be treated as individual salary predictions.
- Geography: National figures cannot tell you what a particular state or metro-area job pays.
- Experience and education: The profile does not provide a quantified pay premium for additional experience or an advanced degree.
What do biomedical engineers do, and what education is typical?
BLS describes the occupation this way: “Bioengineers and biomedical engineers combine engineering principles with sciences to design and create equipment, devices, computer systems, and software.” BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook
Rank #3
A bachelor’s degree in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, or a related engineering field is typical for entry. Some positions require graduate education, and BLS says a graduate degree is typically needed to lead a research team. The profile does not establish that an advanced degree automatically produces a particular salary increase.

BLS projects employment of bioengineers and biomedical engineers to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 1,200 openings per year on average over that period. Openings are not the same as net new jobs: many are expected to arise when workers transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force, including through retirement. BLS points to demand for biomedical devices and procedures, along with collaboration among engineers, scientists, medical researchers, and manufacturers, as context for continued employment growth. This is explanatory context, not a guarantee of job availability for a particular applicant.
