Biomedical engineer pay varies by country, job definition, and the statistic being reported. The strongest current figures available here are a U.S. median annual wage of $109,370 in May 2025 and a Mexico average monthly salary of MXN 15.3 thousand in 2026 Q1. They are not directly comparable: one is an annual median and the other a monthly average. Australia offers a defined weekly earnings measure without a numeric figure in the published profile text reviewed here, while Canadian data groups biomedical engineers with other specialist engineers.
How much do biomedical engineers make?
There is no single, harmonized worldwide salary series for biomedical engineers. National sources cover different occupations, worker groups, time periods, and pay statistics. The figures below are country-specific observations—not a global ranking, and not adjusted for exchange rates, taxes, working hours, or cost of living.
Biomedical engineering can include product design and development, research, quality assurance, technical support, equipment installation and maintenance, clinical engineering, and work on computer systems or software. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the occupation as combining engineering and science to design and create equipment, devices, computer systems, and software. A country’s reported figure may therefore cover a different mix of jobs than another country’s.
Country-by-country salary evidence
| Country | Reported figure | Period and statistic | What the measure covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | US$109,370 per year; lowest 10% earned less than US$71,850 and highest 10% more than US$168,180 | May 2025 median annual wage | BLS category “bioengineers and biomedical engineers”; Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics data reported in the Occupational Outlook Handbook. |
| Mexico | MXN 15.3 thousand per month | 2026 Q1 average monthly salary | Data México’s Biomedical Engineers profile; a monthly average, not an annual median. |
| Australia | Numeric figure not stated in the Jobs and Skills Australia profile text cited here | Median weekly earnings, May 2025 | Full-time, non-managerial employees paid adult rates; before tax and salary sacrifice. The source warns that this is a guide, not a wage-rate determination. |
| Canada | Biomedical-engineer-only figure not established by the cited classification and wage-table results | Statistics Canada publishes monthly occupation wage tables using Labour Force Survey data | Biomedical engineers are grouped in NOC 2021 code 21399, a broader category of other professional engineers. |
United States: the clearest current benchmark
The BLS reports a median annual wage of $109,370 in May 2025 for bioengineers and biomedical engineers. A median divides workers into two equal halves: half earned more and half earned less. In the same May 2025 data, the lowest 10 percent earned less than $71,850, while the highest 10 percent earned more than $168,180. These are wage-distribution figures, not a guaranteed starting salary or an offer for a particular role. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Bioengineers and Biomedical Engineers.
#1 Best Overall
Keep this newer median separate from the older BLS May 2024 estimate: the mean annual wage was $115,020, and the median hourly wage was $51.42. BLS estimated 21,860 workers in that occupational category. The annual wage convention multiplies the hourly mean by 2,080 hours for year-round, full-time work where applicable. A mean and a median answer different questions, and the 2024 mean should not replace the 2025 median. BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.
Mexico: a monthly average, not an annual median
Data México reports an average monthly salary of MXN 15.3 thousand in 2026 Q1 for its Biomedical Engineers profile. The published figure should be read as a Mexico-specific monthly average for that quarter; it is not directly comparable with the U.S. annual median. The profile does not make it a cost-of-living-adjusted comparison with other countries. Data México: Biomedical Engineers.

Australia: useful methodology, but no numeric pay figure here
Jobs and Skills Australia’s biomedical engineers profile describes median weekly earnings from the ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours, May 2025. The population is full-time, non-managerial employees paid at adult rates; the earnings measure is before tax and salary-sacrificed amounts. The profile cautions that the figure is a guide and does not account for experience or other factors that can influence a person’s wage. Because the numeric value is not stated in the profile text cited here, no Australian amount is quoted or annualized. Jobs and Skills Australia: Biomedical Engineers.
Canada: the available occupation group is broader than biomedical engineering
Statistics Canada’s NOC 2021 places biomedical engineers under 21399, Other professional engineers. The group also includes agricultural and bioresource engineers, engineering physicists and engineering scientists, marine and naval engineers, textile engineers, and other specialized engineers. Pay reported for that group should not be labelled a biomedical-engineer-only salary. Statistics Canada publishes monthly occupation wage tables based on Labour Force Survey data, but the table results cited here do not establish an independently verified current figure for biomedical engineers alone. Why these salaries cannot be ranked directly
Comparing the amounts requires more than converting currencies. The U.S. figure is an annual median, Mexico’s is a monthly average, and Australia’s stated method concerns weekly earnings for a specified employee group. Canada’s classification combines biomedical engineers with other specialist occupations. The sources also differ in their survey populations and occupational boundaries.
- Pay interval and statistic: distinguish hourly, weekly, monthly, or annual pay, and median from mean or average.
- Occupation definition: check whether a country isolates biomedical engineers or combines them with other jobs.
- Worker population: note whether the source covers all workers or a specified group, such as full-time employees.
- Taxes and deductions: establish whether the figure is before tax and whether salary sacrifice or other adjustments are included.
- Purchasing power: a currency conversion does not account for local prices, taxes, or differences in working hours. No purchasing-power or cost-of-living adjustment is applied to the figures above.
For a personal salary decision, use the country’s closest occupational match and compare roles with similar responsibilities, seniority, and work arrangements. Treat the national figure as context rather than an individual pay prediction.
