Binarly announced a $10.5 million seed round on March 26, 2024, led by Two Bear Capital. The Los Angeles cybersecurity company says it will use the financing to grow its engineering team and expand adoption of its enterprise platform for firmware and software supply-chain security.

Who invested in Binarly?

Two Bear Capital led the seed round. Blu Ventures, Canaan Partners, Cisco Investments and Liquid 2 Ventures also participated. Existing pre-seed investors Westwave Capital and Acrobator Ventures increased their equity positions. These details were announced by Binarly in its March 26, 2024 funding release.

What does Binarly do?

Binarly sells enterprise software, not a consumer device. Its flagship product, the Binarly Transparency Platform, is described by the company as an AI-powered, cloud-agnostic platform for identifying known and unknown vulnerabilities and providing evidence of malicious code implants in software and device firmware.

The intended users include device manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), independent BIOS vendors (IBVs) and product security teams. SecurityWeek’s March 26, 2024 report says enterprise customers use the technology to manage vulnerabilities, trace transitive dependencies, detect firmware implants and other malicious code, and flag bugs or misconfigurations earlier in code generation.

How does the platform fit into security work?

Software and firmware can include components and dependencies built or maintained by multiple parties. Binarly’s platform is positioned to help security teams inspect those components, identify potential risks and respond to incidents. The company says its remediation playbooks are intended to reduce response time and cost. That is a stated product benefit; the cited sources do not provide independently measured results or comparative performance data.

Binarly CEO Alex Matrosov said the platform was built to “provide verifiability and inspectability at every corner of the software and firmware supply chains.” Cisco Investments Vice President Janey Hoe, an investor in the round, said securing firmware had become especially important and described Binarly as adding a layer of security beneath operating systems. Both statements appeared in the company’s funding release and should be understood as attributed views.
