No verified source establishes how much Billy Joel receives from Social Security—or whether he collects a retirement benefit at all. The Social Security Administration’s latest figures in the cited material put the average retired-worker benefit at $2,071.30 per month in December 2025. That comparison has one known figure and one unknown; it cannot show whether Joel’s check is higher or lower.

How much is Billy Joel’s Social Security check?

The reviewed reporting does not give an amount for Joel or confirm that he collects Social Security retirement benefits. In a July 14, 2015 article about the possibility of benefits for Joel’s young child, InvestmentNews columnist Mary Beth Franklin wrote, “I have no idea whether Mr. Joel is collecting Social Security benefits.” That was her statement at the time, not evidence of Joel’s current status.

The article concerned a possible benefit for a child on a parent’s Social Security record, not Joel’s personal check. A child’s potential benefit is a separate payment category and does not reveal what the parent receives. No verified statement from Joel about his own benefit amount is established in the cited material.

What is the average Social Security retirement check?

The SSA provides two closely related figures, each with a distinct reference period and basis:

Figure Amount What it measures
January 2026 estimate $2,071 per month SSA estimate of the average monthly retirement benefit for January 2026. Social Security Administration
December 2025 statistical average $2,071.30 per month Average benefit received by 53,624,664 retired-worker beneficiaries in December 2025, as reported in the SSA’s 2026 Annual Statistical Supplement. SSA statistical supplement

The figures are consistent, but they are not interchangeable descriptions of every Social Security payment. The December figure is an average for retired-worker beneficiaries—not an average across retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, and not a prediction of what any particular person receives.

Can the two amounts be compared?

Only in a limited sense. The SSA’s retired-worker average is a useful national benchmark, but Joel’s individual amount is not established. Because there is no verified personal figure to put beside the benchmark, it is not possible to say whether his check is above or below average.

Nor does the possibility of a child receiving benefits on a parent’s record fill that gap. The 2015 InvestmentNews article described a potential dependent benefit and said such a benefit was subject to a family maximum. Those are historical secondary-source descriptions, not current eligibility guidance, and they do not disclose a parent’s own payment. For current rules, consult the Social Security Administration.
