He had followed wrestling since childhood, then took a hands-on management role at TNA/Impact Wrestling before pursuing ownership of the NWA. The deal was announced as an agreement in principle in May 2017, but Corgan’s control began on October 1—and what changed hands was principally the NWA brand and associated rights, not the whole wrestling operation its name might suggest.
Wrestling was a long-standing interest, not a new celebrity hobby
Corgan was known to music audiences as the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins, but his interest in professional wrestling predated his business involvement. In a 2024 Pollstar profile, he recalled watching local wrestling with his great-grandmother as a child. By the time he pursued the NWA, he had already spent years engaging with wrestling as both a fan and an executive.

That background helps explain why he sought more than a celebrity appearance or short-term promotional role. He had already tried to influence the direction of an established wrestling company from inside its management.
His TNA/Impact experience came before the NWA
Corgan became president of TNA/Impact Wrestling in 2016. His time there ended amid a turbulent period and a dispute involving the company’s new owners, Anthem Sports & Entertainment. The dispute was later resolved in a settlement, according to Sports Illustrated’s 2017 profile.

Corgan described the TNA experience as frustrating and pointed to internal and financial obstacles. Those are his account of the difficulties, not independent findings about every issue at the company. In his telling, owning the NWA offered a way to pursue his wrestling ideas as his own boss rather than trying to steer another organization.
The NWA deal had two important dates
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 2017 | Former NWA president Bruce Tharpe confirmed an agreement in principle for Corgan to acquire the NWA brand, as reported by Cageside Seats. |
| October 1, 2017 | Corgan’s control took effect. The NWA’s description of a Busted Open interview identifies this as the date he took control after purchasing the brand. |
The distinction matters: May marked confirmation of an agreement in principle, not the date control began. The cited accounts are contemporary reporting and an NWA-posted interview description; they are not the underlying sale contract.

What Corgan bought—and what he did not
The acquisition centered on the NWA brand and associated rights. It should not be described as the purchase of a complete league with its existing roster, affiliated promotions, and archive intact. Cageside Seats, citing PWInsider for details, reported that the deal did not include the affiliated promotions, wrestlers, old match footage, or NWA On Demand service.
That distinction separates a valuable name and its history from the operating assets needed to run a wrestling promotion. The NWA brand could be repositioned under Corgan’s control, but those other entities and materials were outside the reported transaction.

Corgan’s stated plan was a gradual, digital relaunch
Corgan described the acquisition as a rebuilding project. In an October 2017 Sports Illustrated interview, he said: “The fundamental goal for the NWA is to create a 21st century entertainment brand very much pointed at the digital realm.” He framed the NWA as a property with a legacy dating to 1948 and said he wanted to restore its relevance through a long-term content strategy.
His comments in an October 2017 Busted Open interview excerpt published by Wrestlezone also described a shift away from affiliate arrangements, which he said had lapsed, toward a more centrally directed organization. He spoke of building gradually, reaching viewers online, and making the brand broadly accessible. These statements establish what he intended; they do not, by themselves, show whether the strategy succeeded or every planned change occurred.

In the same Wrestlezone excerpt, Corgan described the aim this way: “I want to sort of restitch the history where it belongs, and hopefully move this thing forward so we can get back to the business of making the NWA important in the world of wrestling.” The vision paired the brand’s historic identity with a new approach to content and distribution.

In a September 2024 interview, Pollstar described Corgan as NWA president and owner at that time. Reflecting on the role wrestling played alongside music, he said: “It scratches the itch that music used to scratch.” The comment offers a later perspective on why the business remained meaningful to him after the acquisition.

That is a dated description of his position, not confirmation of who leads or owns the NWA in 2026. The available account supports a clear explanation of how he acquired control in 2017 and what he said he hoped to build, but not a current-status check.
