The billing date and the payment due date are not the same. For a U.S. credit card, the billing or statement date is tied to the end of the period covered by a statement; the due date is the deadline for the issuer to receive the required payment for that statement. Check the dates and instructions on your own statement, because terminology and rules for other kinds of bills can differ.
What is the difference between a billing date and a due date?
A credit-card billing period is the span of account activity covered by a bill. When the period ends, the statement shows activity and a balance for that period, along with the minimum payment and the payment due date. The due date applies to that particular statement: it is the date by which the issuer must receive payment for it to be on time, as described in the CFPB’s credit-card contract definitions.
| Date | What it marks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Billing date, statement date, or cycle closing date | The end of a billing period or the statement associated with that period. Issuers may use these labels differently. | Review the statement’s transactions and balance. |
| Payment due date | The deadline to pay the amount required for that statement. | Arrange for the payment to reach the issuer by the date shown, following the issuer’s payment instructions. |
The billing date is therefore not a second name for the payment deadline. The statement date marks the period being billed; the due date tells you when payment must be received.
Do you pay on the billing date or by the due date?
Use the payment due date printed on the statement. The billing or closing date tells you which period of activity the statement covers; it is not, by itself, the payment deadline. The CFPB defines the due date in terms of when the issuer must receive payment for it to be on time, so follow the payment channel’s posted instructions rather than assuming that initiating a transfer on the due date is sufficient.

The CFPB says card issuers must establish procedures to ensure bills are mailed or delivered at least 21 days before payment is due. That is a general timing requirement, not a substitute for the due date on your own statement; see the CFPB’s guidance on credit-card grace periods.
How much should you pay by the due date?
Your statement identifies the minimum payment and the amount owed. Paying at least the minimum by the due date addresses the required minimum payment, but it does not necessarily prevent interest. A purchase grace period is not required, and its availability and terms depend on the account. When a purchase grace period applies, paying the full eligible balance by the due date is generally necessary to avoid interest on that balance. Check your statement and card agreement for which balance qualifies and what payment is required.

How long is the time between the billing date and the due date?
There is no single interval to apply to every card statement. CFPB consumer guidance says issuers must ensure bills are delivered at least 21 days before payment is due. Separately, Regulation Z provides that, when an issuer follows procedures to deliver covered statements no later than three days after the billing-cycle close, the due date must be no less than 24 days after that close. The 24-day rule is conditional, not a universal promise about every account or a reason to override the date printed on your bill. See the CFPB’s Regulation Z, § 1026.5.

The timing rules discussed here concern covered U.S. credit-card accounts. A utility, subscription, rent, medical, or other invoice may use “billing date” for a different event, and the credit-card timing rules should not be assumed to apply. Read the bill and the provider’s agreement to determine what its dates mean, what amount is due, and when payment must arrive.
