Bill Hilf planned to leave his role as CEO of Vale Group, formerly Vulcan Inc., at the end of May 2024. The company did not plan to name a replacement: its existing leadership team was expected to oversee daily operations and report to Jody Allen.
Who was leaving, and when?
GeekWire reported on May 13, 2024, that Hilf would leave Vale Group at the end of that month. He had served as CEO for more than seven years. The transition plan was described by a Vale Group spokesperson in response to GeekWire’s inquiry, rather than in a public company announcement. GeekWire’s May 13, 2024 report said the organization had changed its name from Vulcan Inc. to Vale Group earlier in 2024.
Who was expected to run the company?
No successor CEO was planned. Vale Group’s current leadership team was expected to handle day-to-day operations and report to Jody Allen. Hilf said he and Allen had discussed the timing of his departure and that he believed the team was prepared to run the organization. GeekWire quoted Hilf describing the leadership group as ready.
How did Hilf’s tenure fit into the company’s history?
Paul Allen appointed Hilf CEO of Vulcan in 2016. At the time, GeekWire reported that Hilf would join on Dec. 1 and report directly to Allen, who would remain chairman and founder. The 2016 report on Hilf’s appointment provides that earlier timeline.

Allen died in October 2018. By the time of the 2024 leadership report, the organization had undergone divestitures and spin-offs. Hilf told GeekWire that it had once employed more than 800 people and then numbered around 140; those figures describe his account at the time of the 2024 report, not a current headcount. GeekWire’s coverage of the transition attributes the figures to Hilf.
Was Vale Group the same as Allen’s sports holdings?
No. GeekWire distinguished Vale Group from the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers, which it reported were owned directly by the Paul Allen Estate and reported separately to Jody Allen. Those teams should not be described as Vale Group businesses. GeekWire’s 2024 report also described Jody Allen as Paul Allen’s sister, a company co-founder and former CEO, and executor and trustee of her brother’s estate.

What did Hilf say he planned to do next?
In 2024, Hilf said he expected to remain involved in Seattle-area initiatives, including as board chair of the Allen Institute for AI. He also planned to spend more time with his family in Montana and pursue personal and charitable interests. GeekWire reported that he had recently been named chair of the national board of American Prairie, a Montana conservation nonprofit. These were plans and roles reported in 2024, not confirmation of his present-day activities. GeekWire’s report on Hilf’s departure covers those next steps.
