Bill Gates’s 2022 Forecast for the Gates Foundation—and Its 2045 Closure Plan

Bill Gates’s 2022 forecast has given way to the foundation’s announced plan to close permanently on December 31, 2045, with a different leadership structure.

Bill Gates’s 2022 expectation that the Gates Foundation would wind down over roughly 25 years is no longer its current public timeline. In May 2025, the foundation announced a plan to close permanently on December 31, 2045. The later plan also reflects a different leadership reality: Melinda French Gates left the foundation in 2024.

What Bill Gates said in 2022

At the 2022 Forbes 400 Philanthropy Summit, Gates said the foundation would spend down over about 25 years. He expected that he and Melinda French Gates would help keep it on track during that period. GeekWire also reported the foundation’s then-existing charter language, which called for distributing its assets within 20 years after the death of the last of Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, or Warren Buffett. GeekWire’s September 26, 2022 report captures that earlier forecast and framework.

When will the Gates Foundation close?

The foundation’s current announced plan is to close permanently on December 31, 2045. In May 2025, it said its board had affirmed an accelerated timeline through a charter change. That specific date supersedes the approximate 25-year forecast as the foundation’s current public plan. The foundation’s announcement and current FAQ give the date.

How much does the foundation expect to spend?

The foundation expects to spend more than $200 billion between 2025 and 2045, counting the remaining endowment and Bill Gates’s future contributions. It says the exact amount will depend on market performance and inflation, so this is a projection rather than a guaranteed total. The figure is the foundation’s announced estimate, not an independently verified future result. The May 2025 announcement sets out the estimate and its qualifications.

For context, the foundation said it had given away more than $100 billion during its first 25 years, from 2000 through 2025. The two figures describe different periods and should not be read as a like-for-like measure of impact: one is past giving as reported by the foundation, while the other is a forecast for future spending.

Gates’s stated commitment

In his May 8, 2025 essay, Bill Gates wrote: “I will give away virtually all my wealth through the Gates Foundation over the next 20 years to the cause of saving and improving lives around the world.” The foundation’s announcement published the essay and described the spending plan.

What changed about leadership?

Melinda French Gates left the foundation in 2024 and continues philanthropy and impact investing through Pivotal. The 2022 picture of Bill and Melinda Gates remaining at the helm therefore does not describe the current arrangement. In written responses to the Associated Press about the closure decision, French Gates said: “Ultimately, though,” she wrote, “the timeline was Bill’s decision to make with the board of trustees.” The AP interview reported her response.

The foundation’s current FAQ identifies Bill Gates as board chair and Mark Suzman as CEO. It says a board that includes independent experts provides strategic and financial oversight. Those are the foundation’s stated governance arrangements; its closure timeline and projected spending remain plans. The foundation FAQ describes its leadership and board.

What does the foundation intend to focus on before closing?

The foundation says its primary aims for its final two decades are to prevent deaths of mothers and babies, combat deadly infectious diseases, and help people move out of poverty. It also says its work will continue in U.S. student opportunity, digital public infrastructure, AI applications, and gender equality. These are stated priorities, not guaranteed outcomes. The foundation’s 2025 announcement describes its aims.

Mark Suzman, the foundation’s CEO and board member, said in the May 8, 2025 announcement: “The needs at this time are greater than any we’ve seen in the lifetime of the foundation, but the achievements of the past 25 years have shown that tremendous progress is still possible.”

Question 2022 framing Current announced plan
When does the foundation wind down? Gates described an approximate 25-year spend-down horizon at the 2022 Forbes 400 Philanthropy Summit. The report also described a charter provision tied to the death of the last of Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, or Warren Buffett. GeekWire, September 26, 2022 Permanent closure on December 31, 2045, under the plan announced in May 2025 after a charter change. Foundation announcement
Who leads the foundation? The report described Bill and Melinda Gates as expecting to help keep it on track. GeekWire, September 26, 2022 The foundation identifies Bill Gates as chair and Mark Suzman as CEO; Melinda French Gates left in 2024. Foundation FAQ; AP

The useful distinction is between a 2022 forecast and a later, more specific plan. The 2045 date is the foundation’s announced target; the foundation’s own materials do not establish that it will meet the schedule or achieve its stated aims.
