That figure is a secondary source’s estimate of his peak wealth; a separate estimate presented by an expert for Donna Motsinger’s lawyers and reported in 2026 put his net worth at roughly $128 million. Neither is an audited current balance sheet. Public reporting describes a career built on television and related business income, followed by lost work, property sales and borrowing, legal costs, and a major civil judgment. It does not establish exactly what Cosby owns, owes, or can readily pay now.
What the $400 million figure actually means
Celebrity Net Worth described $400 million as an estimated peak net worth in its March 2026 account. The New York Times, reporting on the 2026 Motsinger civil trial, said an expert witness called by her lawyers estimated Cosby’s net worth at roughly $128 million. These figures have different sources and bases: one is a secondary estimate of peak wealth; the other is an expert estimate reported during litigation. Neither verifies his current net worth. Celebrity Net Worth; The New York Times.
Net worth is not the same as cash available to satisfy a judgment. It generally describes assets minus liabilities, while collection also depends on ownership, liquidity, liens, and legal enforceability. The reporting available here does not settle those questions for Cosby, so a large estimate cannot show how much he can pay now.
How Cosby reportedly built his wealth
Celebrity Net Worth attributes Cosby’s fortune to television work and business participation, including his role as creator and producer of The Cosby Show, production and backend participation, syndication income, endorsements, real estate, and art. Its March 2026 account gives figures such as an estimated high-end $4 million per episode, an estimated $166 million from a 1988 syndication deal, and at least $300 million in syndication earnings over later decades. Those are claims from that secondary account, not independently verified contract terms or a complete accounting of Cosby’s receipts. Celebrity Net Worth.
The same account says networks pulled the show from syndication after sexual-assault allegations became public and that endorsements and touring work disappeared. It also describes legal expenses, settlements, borrowing against property, and sales as sources of financial pressure. These reports help explain why peak-wealth estimates may not describe present circumstances, but they do not supply a verified, year-by-year balance sheet.
The civil judgment and what collection reporting says
On March 23, 2026, a California civil jury found Cosby liable to Donna Motsinger for sexual battery and assault tied to her account of an incident in 1972. The jury awarded $17.5 million for past damages, $1.75 million for future damages, and $40 million in punitive damages, for a total of $59.25 million. Cosby denied her allegations; he did not testify at trial, and his attorney said the defense intended to appeal. In an August 2026 report, The New York Times said Motsinger’s lawyers told the court Cosby had paid none of the judgment and sought information to pursue collection. Their filings cited a 2025 New York townhouse sale reported at $28 million and alleged that $1.29 million was transferred within 48 hours after sale proceeds entered an account. The lawyers characterized the transfers as concerning in their collection arguments; the report does not establish that a court found concealment or improper transfers. The sale price alone also does not show net proceeds or who ultimately owned the funds. The Times said an enforcement hearing was set for September 2026, but the sources cited here do not establish its outcome or the current appeal status. The New York Times.
Separate cases should not be conflated
Cosby’s legal history includes both criminal and civil proceedings, which have different outcomes and meanings. In 2021, Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court overturned his criminal conviction and he was released after serving nearly three years. The Associated Press reported that the reversal concerned a prior prosecutor’s non-prosecution assurance and the use of deposition testimony; it was not a factual finding that the alleged conduct did not happen. In a separate California case, a civil jury awarded $500,000 in 2022 to Judy Huth, who said Cosby sexually assaulted her as a teenager in 1975. These cases are distinct from Motsinger’s 2026 civil verdict. Associated Press.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about his finances
- Supported by public reporting: Cosby accumulated substantial wealth through television and related business interests, according to the secondary account; his income opportunities were reportedly reduced, and he faces a $59.25 million civil judgment.
- Not established by the figures cited: a current audited net worth, the amount of liquid cash available, the full value and ownership of his assets, his current liabilities, ongoing royalty income, or how much of the judgment can ultimately be collected.
- Still unresolved in the cited coverage: the outcome of the September 2026 enforcement hearing and the final appellate status of the Motsinger case.
Cosby’s own reported deposition description of his net worth having “gone down like a submarine with no motor” conveys financial decline, but it is not a quantified account. The available evidence supports a more careful answer than either headline figure: he once had a widely estimated large fortune, but neither $400 million nor roughly $128 million should be treated as a verified measure of what he is worth today.
