Between 2017 and 2022, the average U.S. farm grew from 441 to 463 acres, even as the country lost farms and farmland. The largest acreage group—farms of at least 5,000 acres—was the only size class to increase in number. Those figures show a shift in the distribution of farm sizes, not that every large farm expanded or that larger operations own the land they work.
What changed in U.S. farm size from 2017 to 2022?
The latest five-year Census comparison in the USDA figures cited here is 2017–2022. In 2022, the Census counted 1,900,487 farms and 880,100,848 acres of land in farms, an average of 463 acres per farm.
Compared with 2017, the number of farms fell 6.9%, while land in farms fell 2.2%. Because the farm count declined faster than the land base, average size rose 5.0%, from 441 to 463 acres. These national figures come from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service’s 2022 Census of Agriculture, U.S. national-level data, released February 13, 2024.
Which farms increased in number?
By acreage class, only farms with 5,000 acres or more increased in number between 2017 and 2022. Their count rose from approximately 26,000 to 27,000. Every smaller acreage class declined. The figures describe the number of farms in each class; they do not track individual operations over time or prove that each farm in the largest class added acreage.

Farm size is not the same as farm sales
Acres operated and annual sales measure different things. A farm can generate high sales without operating as much land as another farm, and sales figures do not establish who owns the land.
The USDA Economic Research Service reports that the number of farms with at least $1 million in annual sales increased from 81,660 in 2012 to 107,952 in 2022. Separately, NASS reported that 26,214 farms—1.4% of all farms—accounted for half of agricultural sales in 2022. Farms with sales of $1 million or more were fewer than 6% of farms and sold more than three-fourths of agricultural products. These are measures of market value, not acreage concentration.

What counts as a farm in the Census?
For Census purposes, a farm is a place that produced and sold, or normally would have sold, at least $1,000 in agricultural products during the census year. NASS has used this definition since 1974. It includes operations with relatively modest agricultural sales, so the farm count is not a count only of large commercial businesses.

That definition matters when interpreting the denominator behind average farm size and when comparing counts across Census years. The average is total reported land in farms divided by the number of farms; it is not a measure of the typical individual farm’s growth.
What the figures do—and do not—show
- They show a national shift in counts and acreage: fewer farms, a slightly smaller total land base, and a higher average acreage per farm from 2017 to 2022.
- They do not identify one cause: the cited Census and ERS figures do not quantify how much consolidation, productivity, land conversion, demographics, or other factors contributed to this interval’s changes.
- They do not show land ownership: the acreage and sales statistics here should not be read as a breakdown of who owns the land farmed.
- They do not describe every location: national totals can mask state and county differences. NASS provides state and county data, tables by farm size and type, and maps through its 2022 Census reports and publications.
How to read “biggest farms get bigger”
The phrase is accurate as shorthand for two measured trends: the average farm covered more acres in 2022 than in 2017, and the 5,000-acre-and-larger class was the only acreage group whose count rose. It is not proof that all large farms expanded, that the entire U.S. land base grew, or that acreage and sales concentration are interchangeable.
