The $7.4 billion in student debt cancellation announced on April 12, 2024, was aimed at about 277,000 borrowers who qualified through existing programs—not everyone with federal student loans. The groups included some borrowers reaching early forgiveness under SAVE, borrowers qualifying for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), and borrowers whose income-driven repayment (IDR) account adjustments brought them to forgiveness. To find out whether your own loans were discharged, check your StudentAid.gov account and servicer notices; the announcement alone cannot confirm your eligibility or account status.
What the $7.4 billion announcement covered
The Biden administration’s April 12, 2024 announcement described cancellation for about 277,000 borrowers through several existing forgiveness paths. The figure is a total for that announcement, not an amount available to each borrower or a new cancellation program with one application for all borrowers. Associated Press reporting on the announcement
The named paths were certain borrowers qualifying for early forgiveness under SAVE, borrowers meeting PSLF requirements, and borrowers whose IDR account-adjustment counts brought them to forgiveness. Whether any of those paths applied depended on the borrower’s loans and records.
How to check whether your loans were forgiven
- Review your StudentAid.gov Dashboard. Sign in and check your loan types, balances, repayment plan, and account information. Federal Student Aid loan and repayment guidance
- Read your servicer messages. Look for notices about a discharge, payment-count updates, or a repayment-plan change. If you were enrolled in SAVE, pay particular attention to transition instructions and any deadline sent to you.
- Check the program rules that match your situation. For PSLF, use the PSLF Help Tool to review employer and application requirements. For IDR-related forgiveness, check current plan eligibility against your loan type and disbursement dates.
- Ask for an account-specific review if something looks wrong. Contact your servicer or Federal Student Aid if your balance, payment count, or discharge status does not match your records. A public announcement cannot verify an individual account.
Which forgiveness path might apply?
| Path | What the announcement included | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SAVE early forgiveness | Certain borrowers who qualified for early forgiveness under SAVE were included in the 2024 announcement. Associated Press reporting | SAVE is no longer available. Former enrollees should review their account and servicer messages for their individual transition instructions and deadline. Federal Student Aid’s current SAVE guidance Department of Education transition guidance, March 27, 2026 |
| Public Service Loan Forgiveness | PSLF borrowers who qualified were among the groups included. | PSLF may forgive the remaining balance of eligible Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for an eligible government or nonprofit employer, with a qualifying repayment plan. Check your employer, loan eligibility, and payment records with the PSLF Help Tool. Federal Student Aid PSLF guidance |
| IDR account adjustment | Some borrowers reached forgiveness after IDR account-adjustment counts were credited. | Check current IDR plan eligibility for your loan type and disbursement dates, then compare applicable payment amounts, repayment periods, and discharge conditions. Why the headline cannot establish your eligibility
Forgiveness depends on your own loan type, payment history, and program requirements. For PSLF, employment and qualifying-plan rules also matter. Prior consolidation, the count of payments credited to your account, and the status of your records can affect the result. Federal Student Aid advises borrowers to check their loan details and current plan eligibility rather than infer qualification from a general announcement. Important: SAVE is no longer available
Federal Student Aid says a federal court order ended SAVE and that the plan is no longer available to borrowers. The Department of Education’s March 27, 2026 guidance says people enrolled in SAVE must transition to a legal repayment plan; servicers will communicate individual deadlines. Do not assume that an old SAVE-related forgiveness announcement means you can enroll in SAVE now or remain in it. Check the latest official guidance and the instructions sent for your account.
