BHP Yandi workforce scale-back: what is known about the reported job cuts

BHP’s reported Yandi workforce scale-back dates to October 2025. The final number of redundancies and redeployments has not been publicly established in the sources cited here.

The reported BHP workforce scale-back at Western Australia’s Yandi iron ore mine was a 2025 plan, not a newly announced October 2026 cull. BHP said it would seek to redeploy workers, but the final number of redundancies and redeployments has not been established in the available public reporting. The figures in the original coverage were estimates, not a confirmed headcount or confirmed job-loss total.

What was reported about jobs at Yandi?

On 28–29 October 2025, ABC and PerthNow reported that BHP planned to reduce the workforce at Yandi as the mine’s production profile ramped down. BHP told PerthNow: “Yandi’s production profile has steadily ramped down in recent years, and we now need to adjust the mine plan to meet current and future operational requirements.” PerthNow’s 29 October 2025 report and ABC’s 28 October report describe a planned wind-down, not a completed redundancy tally.

The October 2025 reports gave different workforce figures. PerthNow’s headline said about 720 workers, while its article body described about 600 direct workers and up to 200 contractors, mainly working in catering and accommodation through ESS. ABC reported around 600 direct staff and about 150 contractors. These are contemporary reported estimates that do not reconcile to one verified total.

What was confirmed, and what was an estimate?

  • BHP said it would try to redeploy as many Yandi workers as possible and needed further consultation before it could determine how many jobs would be lost.
  • Western Mine Workers Alliance coordinator Shane Roulstone estimated 100 to 150 jobs could be lost. That was his estimate, not a BHP-confirmed redundancy figure.
  • Roulstone forecast in October 2025 that the wind-down would finish by mid-2026, with about 100 employees needed onsite at that point. This was a forecast, not confirmation of the later workforce.

Is the job cull still imminent?

No: “imminent” describes the framing of the October 2025 coverage, not a current announcement. By 8 October 2026, the expected mid-2026 wind-down period had passed. The public materials cited here establish continued Yandi production and subsequent investment plans, but do not report the final number of redundancies or redeployments. Readers should therefore treat both the 100–150 possible job losses and the expected onsite staffing level as forecasts made in 2025, not as actual outcomes.

Why is BHP scaling back Yandi?

Yandi is one of BHP’s five Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) mining hubs, on Banjima country about 178 kilometres northwest of Newman. It opened in 1991. BHP’s explanation in 2025 was that production had steadily ramped down and the mine plan needed adjusting to meet operational requirements.

BHP’s operational review reported Yandi joint-venture production of 9,338 kilotonnes in the nine months to 31 March 2026, down 22% from 12,036 kilotonnes in the same period a year earlier. That supports the account of declining production, but does not tell us how many employees were ultimately redeployed or made redundant. BHP’s later FY2026 figures list 12,590 kilotonnes of Yandi production for that financial year; the reported nine-month joint-venture figure and full-year mine figure are different reporting measures and periods, so they should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

What does the Ministers North project mean for Yandi?

On 16 July 2026, BHP announced a US$0.9 billion investment in Ministers North, a high-grade Brockman orebody southeast of Yandi. The project is planned to use existing Yandi infrastructure, including a 13-kilometre haul road and upgrades and new crushers at Yandi. BHP targets 20 million tonnes per annum once the project is ramped up, with first ore expected in FY29. Those are project plans, not current production.

BHP described Ministers North as a way to maintain continuity as Yandi matures. The project is a joint venture in which BHP owns 85%, Itochu 8% and Mitsui 7%. Its reliance on Yandi infrastructure indicates a continuing role for the site in future operations; it does not establish a reversal of Yandi’s production ramp-down or a particular workforce outcome.

BHP’s FY2026 results said WAIO achieved record iron ore production and shipments and that Ministers North would help sustain WAIO production above 305 million tonnes per annum. That is a company-wide WAIO outlook, not a claim that Yandi’s own production rose or that its workforce returned to an earlier level.

What remains unknown about the job losses?

The public sources cited here do not establish the final redundancy count, the number of workers redeployed, or the actual staffing level after the expected wind-down. The 100–150 figure was a union representative’s estimate; BHP’s statement was that redeployment would be pursued and consultation was still needed. Continued mine production and future infrastructure investment do not, by themselves, answer those employment questions.
