A Wirecutter “pick” is its top recommendation for a particular product guide—not a guarantee that the product is best for every shopper. To decide whether it is right for you, check what the guide tested, why it chose that item, and whether its strengths and trade-offs fit your needs and budget.
What a Wirecutter “pick” means
Wirecutter uses “picks” to mean its “top recommendations,” according to its guide-anatomy explainer. A pick is the outcome of a comparison within a specific guide: Wirecutter identifies contenders, evaluates them against the guide’s criteria, and explains why it recommends one or more options.
That scope matters. A guide’s “best” is tied to the needs and criteria it addresses, not a universal ranking for every budget, household, or use. A recommendation may be compelling for the reasons the guide gives and still be a poor match for your circumstances.
What to look for before you buy
- Read the criteria and methodology. Find out what the guide considers important and how it evaluated the contenders. That tells you what “best” means in this category.
- Check the reasons behind the pick. Look for concrete comparisons: what the recommended product does well, where alternatives differ, and why the guide favored one option.
- Match the trade-offs to your situation. Consider whether the cited strengths matter to you, whether the limitations affect how you would use the product, and whether the cost fits your budget.
- Look for other recommendations. A guide may identify options for different needs. Compare those alternatives against the criteria that matter most to you rather than assuming the first pick is automatically your best choice.
- Check dates and updates. If the guide shows when it was published or updated, use that information to judge how current its recommendation appears. Wirecutter describes planned or ongoing testing in its guide structure, but does not establish one update schedule for all guides.
How Wirecutter describes its editorial and business practices
Wirecutter and The New York Times describe product selection as editorial and testing-led. The Times Help Center says Wirecutter makes decisions about products to feature based on editorial and product-testing standards, not affiliate deals or advertising relationships. Wirecutter’s editorial standards say staff should not let affiliate revenue influence which products they choose.

Those are statements by the publisher about its own processes; they are useful context, not independent proof that every recommendation is right for every buyer or free from error. The Wirecutter About page lists subscriptions, retailer links, sales of reviewed products, and affiliate programs among its revenue sources.
Wirecutter’s revenue explainer says business and affiliate discussions occur after journalists make their picks, and that some picks earn no affiliate revenue when a high-quality retailer has no affiliate program. Readers can take both parts of the picture into account: the organization discloses commercial revenue sources and says those relationships do not determine editorial selections.

Use the recommendation as evidence, not a substitute for judgment
A top pick can help narrow a crowded market, especially when its guide lays out comparisons and explains the choice. The practical question is whether the guide’s priorities line up with yours. A recommendation is most useful when you can see the reasoning, understand the trade-offs, and decide that the result fits your use and spending limits.
