On December 1, 2021, Better.com CEO Vishal Garg told about 900 employees on a Zoom call that their jobs were terminated immediately. He apologized later that month, took a leave of absence, and returned as CEO in January 2022. A 2026 SEC-filed statement from Better’s special committee says the board later transitioned him out of the CEO role, amid an ongoing dispute over the company’s board.
What happened on Better.com’s December 2021 Zoom call?
Garg announced the layoffs on December 1, 2021. As CBS News reported, he told employees: “If you’re on this call you’re part of the unlucky group being laid off. Your employment here is terminated. Effective immediately.” About 900 workers were affected.
Coverage disagreed about what share of Better.com’s workforce that represented. CBS and TechCrunch reported about 9%; Al Jazeera reported that the company described the cuts as about 15%. The reports do not establish a single reconciled percentage, so the number of employees is the clearer measure.
The video circulated online and drew criticism of the way the decision was communicated. The episode became more than a story about a layoff announcement: it raised questions about how an employer communicates a consequential decision to workers and what accountability followed.

Did Vishal Garg apologize to the employees who were fired?
In December 2021, Garg apologized in a message published on Better.com’s website. He wrote, “I failed to show the appropriate amount of respect and appreciation for the individuals who were affected and for their contributions to Better,” and added, “I blundered the execution.”
The apology was addressed to current employees, not directly to those who had lost their jobs, as CBS noted. That distinction matters: the statement acknowledged the way the layoffs were handled, but its audience did not include the affected workers themselves.

What followed the backlash?
TechCrunch reported that Better’s vice president of communications, head of public relations, and head of marketing resigned after the incident. The same outlet reported that the company delayed its planned SPAC closing. These are reported developments in the period after the call; the reporting does not establish that the Zoom announcement alone caused each one.
Did Garg step down after the viral call?
Not immediately. In December 2021, Garg took a leave of absence. In January 2022, Better’s board announced that he would return to full-time duties after a month-long break. The board said the process included executive coaching, an independent review of company culture, and organizational changes.

The board described itself as “confident in Vishal and in the changes he is committed to making to provide the type of leadership, focus and vision that Better needs at this pivotal time.” That was the board’s stated rationale for his return, not independent evidence that the coaching or review produced lasting cultural improvements.

A later update appears in a 2026 SEC-filed consent revocation statement from a special committee of Better Home & Finance. The filing says the board transitioned Garg from the CEO role. It also describes an effort by Garg and affiliates to remove five of the company’s eight directors.

The filing is a corporate statement setting out the special committee’s position in an active governance dispute, not a neutral adjudication of that dispute. It establishes that the committee made these claims in the filing; it does not establish the ultimate outcome of the effort to change the board.
