Bestow announced on May 13, 2025, that it had closed a $120 million oversubscribed Series D co-led by Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives and Smith Point Capital. The company also secured a separate $50 million credit facility from TriplePoint Capital. Bestow is no longer primarily a direct-to-consumer life insurer: after selling its carrier and consumer business to Sammons Financial Group in 2024, it is concentrating on software and services for life insurers and annuity providers.

The financing therefore represents both a large funding round and a business-model transition—from selling insurance directly to consumers to supplying the infrastructure that other insurers use to sell, underwrite and administer policies.

The financing, in plain English

The equity financing was structured as follows:

Component Amount What it means
Primary equity $75 million New capital invested into Bestow for corporate purposes and growth
Secondary investments $45 million Existing shares purchased from shareholders; this money generally does not go directly onto the company’s balance sheet
Separate credit facility $50 million Debt financing from TriplePoint Capital, subject to repayment and lender terms

The correct description is a $120 million equity Series D plus a separate $50 million credit facility. It should not be described as $170 million of equity funding.

Bestow did not disclose its valuation. CEO Melbourne O’Banion told TechCrunch that the valuation had approximately doubled since Bestow’s $70 million Series C in December 2020. That is the CEO’s characterization, not a publicly disclosed valuation or an independently verified market figure.

TechCrunch also reported that Bestow’s total equity funding exceeded $300 million after the Series D. Smith Point Capital separately identified a $30 million investment in the round in its company news listing.

Bestow’s shift from consumer insurance to enterprise software

Bestow was founded in 2017 and initially built a digital, direct-to-consumer life-insurance business. Its earlier model included selling, underwriting and servicing policies, supported by technology intended to simplify applications and accelerate underwriting.

That model changed in 2024, when Bestow sold its life-insurance carrier and consumer business to Sammons Financial Group for an undisclosed amount. The transaction allowed Bestow to focus on selling technology and services to insurers rather than operating the same consumer-facing insurance business itself.

This distinction matters. Bestow’s current business should generally be understood as an enterprise life-and-annuity software provider, not automatically as the risk-bearing carrier for every policy processed through its technology. The insurer using the platform remains responsible for underwriting risk, product governance, regulatory compliance and obligations to policyholders.

What Bestow’s platform does

Bestow describes its platform as covering multiple parts of the life-insurance value chain. Its current product materials list capabilities including:

  • Application tools for digital insurance applications and workflows.
  • Agent tools to support distribution and producer interactions.
  • Underwriting technology to help insurers evaluate applications and make decisions.
  • Third-party-administrator functionality for operational and administrative work.
  • Customer portals for policyholder experiences and service.
  • Performance IQ and data optimization for reporting, analytics and operational improvement.
  • An Innovation Lab for developing new capabilities.

The company says its platform is used by carriers including Nationwide, Transamerica and USAA. Those customer references are claims made by Bestow and do not establish that every carrier uses every module or that the platform has been deployed in the same way at each organization.

In practical terms, a carrier evaluating Bestow would be considering software for selected or interconnected workflows such as product launch, applications, distribution, underwriting, administration and customer service. The platform does not eliminate the insurer’s need to integrate systems, meet state-by-state requirements or govern its underwriting and policy processes.

Why the round matters to insurers and investors

Life insurance is a large but operationally complex business. Carriers often work with legacy policy-administration systems, long product life cycles, extensive regulatory requirements and multiple distribution channels. Even basic changes to an application or product can require coordination among technology, actuarial, compliance, operations and distribution teams.

Bestow’s pitch is that insurers can modernize more quickly by using specialized, cloud-based infrastructure rather than building every digital capability internally. That places the company in the market for vertical software: technology designed for a specific industry—in this case, life insurance and annuities.

The financing also suggests that investors see potential in insurance infrastructure rather than only in consumer-facing insurance apps. Goldman Sachs Alternatives’ Growth Equity business and Smith Point Capital co-led the round, while TriplePoint provided the separate credit facility. The available announcements do not explain the precise strategic or financial role of each co-lead beyond their participation in leading the financing.

Bestow said it tripled revenue in 2024, achieved 10-fold growth over two years and expected profitability to be on the horizon. These are company-reported figures, not audited financial results supplied with the funding announcement. Bestow did not provide precise revenue, customer-retention, customer-concentration or profitability metrics.

What Bestow said it would do with the money

According to Bestow’s funding announcement, the new capital was intended to support:

  • Expansion of the company’s platform capabilities.
  • Additional research and development.
  • New insurance products and services.
  • Additional permanent life-insurance products, including indexed universal life, or IUL.
  • Entry into annuities, which the company targeted for 2026.
  • Hiring and broader workforce expansion.
  • Dedicated go-to-market and carrier-support teams.
  • Faster onboarding of new insurance-company customers.

IUL is a form of permanent life insurance whose cash-value crediting is linked in part to an external index, subject to policy terms, caps and participation rates. The reference to IUL describes Bestow’s announced product roadmap; it does not by itself prove that a particular product was available to every carrier or consumer.

Likewise, the 2026 annuity objective was a plan stated in 2025. It should not be treated as proof that an annuity product launched on schedule unless Bestow separately confirms the specific launch and scope.

What carriers should evaluate before buying a platform like this

A funding round does not establish that a software platform is the right fit for every insurer. A carrier considering Bestow or a comparable provider would need to examine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scope: Which functions are included—distribution, underwriting, policy administration, servicing, claims or only selected workflows?
  • Product flexibility: Can the system support term, whole life, universal life, IUL and annuity products in the relevant jurisdictions?
  • Implementation: How long will deployment take, and which internal systems must be integrated, replaced or maintained?
  • Data and decisioning: Which data sources, underwriting models and governance controls are supported?
  • Regulatory controls: Can the insurer manage state-specific filings, product rules, audit trails and market-conduct requirements?
  • Integration: Does the platform connect with existing policy, billing, customer-relationship, agent and data systems?
  • Ownership and portability: Who owns the data, configurations, models and customer relationship, and how can the insurer export them?
  • Economics: Is pricing based on implementation, subscription, policy volume, transaction volume or a combination?
  • Reliability and security: What service-level commitments, disaster-recovery arrangements and security certifications are available?
  • Vendor durability: Can the provider support a carrier’s systems over the decades-long life of many insurance policies?

Enterprise insurance implementations can be lengthy even when the underlying software is cloud-based. A broad platform may reduce the number of vendors a carrier must manage, but it can also increase integration, migration and vendor-concentration risk. Some insurers may prefer best-of-breed tools for separate functions instead.

What the secondary financing means

The $45 million secondary component is important because it changes how the headline number should be interpreted. In a primary investment, new money goes to the company. In a secondary transaction, existing shareholders sell shares to new or existing investors.

Secondary liquidity can help early shareholders, employees or other holders realize part of the value of their stakes, but it does not provide the company with the same operating capital as a primary investment. Of the $120 million Series D, Bestow identified $75 million as primary capital and $45 million as secondary investments.

The separate $50 million credit facility also should not be treated as free growth capital. Debt can extend a company’s financing capacity without immediately issuing additional equity, but it creates repayment obligations and may include lender covenants or other conditions. The available announcement did not provide the facility’s full terms.

What remains unknown

The funding announcement left several questions unanswered:

  • Bestow’s valuation was not disclosed.
  • The price paid by Sammons for Bestow’s former carrier and consumer business was not disclosed.
  • The identities of all Series D participants were not fully disclosed in the available materials.
  • Bestow did not publish detailed revenue, profitability, retention or customer-level economics.
  • The materials did not establish customer concentration or the share of revenue attributable to particular carriers.
  • The announcements did not provide implementation timelines or independently verified measures of platform performance.
  • The product roadmap did not guarantee that planned IUL or annuity capabilities would launch on a particular schedule.

These gaps do not invalidate the financing. They do mean that the round should be read as evidence of investor backing and strategic ambition—not as proof that Bestow has solved insurer modernization, reached profitability or become the dominant platform in its category.

Bestow’s position as of 2026

Bestow’s newsroom continued to position the company around life and annuity infrastructure. It listed a July 29, 2026 announcement about Bestow Labs, described as a team pursuing AI-native products. That announcement indicates continued product development in the company’s enterprise direction, but it does not independently establish adoption, revenue impact or commercial success.

The central change remains the same: Bestow moved from operating a consumer-oriented insurance business toward enabling other carriers through specialized software. For insurers, the relevant question is not simply whether the platform is “digital,” but whether it can support the carrier’s products, regulatory obligations, integrations, data controls and long-term operating model.
