Best Ways to Allocate Your 401(k) Money

A practical guide to allocating a 401(k): check the employer match, review your plan’s funds and fees, choose a target-date fund or self-directed mix, and rebalance periodically.

Start by checking your employer match, then choose investments from your plan’s menu: either a diversified target-date fund that fits your expected retirement year or a self-directed mix you can maintain. There is no universally correct stock-and-bond percentage. Your time horizon, ability and willingness to tolerate losses, other retirement assets, and the investments available in your plan all matter.

How to allocate your 401(k), step by step

  1. Find the match rules. Check your plan document or summary plan description (SPD) for the match formula, eligibility conditions, and any vesting rules. If you can, contribute enough to receive the full match available to you. The IRS gives a 50% match on contributions up to 5% of salary as an example; it is not a standard formula. The IRS explains that matching conditions are plan-specific.
  2. Review the investment menu and disclosures. Your plan limits your choices. Read the fund descriptions, fee information, and available target-date options before deciding. The IRS says participant-directed plans must offer at least three diversified investment options with different risk and return characteristics. See the IRS overview of plan assets and investment choices.
  3. Choose an allocation route. Decide whether a diversified target-date fund or a self-directed mix better fits your preference and circumstances. Compare the actual investments, risks, glide paths, and costs—not just fund names or dates.
  4. Set your contribution rate separately. How much of your pay you contribute is different from how that money is invested. The IRS lists a $24,500 basic elective deferral limit for 2026, subject to compensation and other applicable rules. That is a contribution limit, not an allocation target. Check the IRS contribution rules.
  5. Revisit and rebalance periodically. If you choose your own funds, compare your current mix with your intended allocation and rebalance when it has drifted. Use the plan’s available trading or rebalancing options, and check whether any transaction restrictions apply.

Choose a target-date fund or build your own mix?

A target-date fund is designed to provide a diversified portfolio in one investment and generally shifts toward a more conservative mix as its target year approaches. A self-directed portfolio gives you more control over the mix, but you must select diversified options and keep the allocation aligned with your plan. Neither route is automatically right for everyone.

What to compare Target-date fund Self-directed mix
Management effort One fund handles its internal allocation and adjustments; you still need to assess whether it fits your situation. You choose and monitor the funds, maintain the intended mix, and rebalance periodically.
Asset mix and risk Review the fund’s current stock, bond, and other exposures; funds with the same target year can differ. Build a mix from the plan’s diversified options, based on your horizon and capacity and willingness to withstand losses.
Glide path Check how the allocation changes and whether it reaches its most conservative point at or after the target year. Some funds are described as “to” retirement and others as “through” retirement. You determine whether and how the allocation changes over time.
Fees Check the fund’s expense ratio and any costs of underlying funds, as well as plan-level fees. Compare the expense ratios and any other disclosed charges for each fund, along with plan-level fees.
Fit with other assets Consider the fund alongside your other retirement accounts and expected income sources. Consider the combined allocation across accounts and income sources, not only the 401(k) holdings.

Using a target-date fund

Choose a target year near the year you expect to retire, then inspect the fund rather than assuming that its date determines its risk. Two funds labeled for the same year may have different stock-and-bond mixes, glide paths, assumptions about retirement, and fees. A “to” fund typically reaches its most conservative allocation around the target date; a “through” fund continues changing its allocation after that date. Confirm the specific fund’s approach in its materials.

Look at the holdings and costs, including charges from underlying funds if the target-date fund invests in other funds. Then consider whether its allocation duplicates or conflicts with investments elsewhere in your retirement savings. A target year is not a promise of a particular account balance or income: the SEC states that target-date funds do not guarantee sufficient or specific retirement income at or after that date. Read the SEC’s March 25, 2025 Investor Bulletin and the Department of Labor’s guidance on target-date funds.

Building a self-directed allocation

If you prefer to choose individual plan options, start with the mix you can realistically stick with through market declines—not a percentage borrowed from a generic rule. A longer investment horizon may give you more time to recover from losses, but it does not eliminate risk. Your financial capacity to absorb losses and your emotional willingness to do so are both relevant, as are other retirement assets and expected income.

  • Identify exposures. Use the plan descriptions to understand what each option invests in and what risks it carries. Avoid assuming that a fund name alone tells you its full exposure.
  • Use diversification. Spread investments across appropriate asset exposures using the diversified options available in your plan; avoid relying on a single narrow holding as your entire retirement portfolio.
  • Set a deliberate mix. Choose an allocation that reflects your horizon and risk tolerance, and write down the intended mix so you have a basis for later rebalancing.
  • Compare total costs. Review each option’s expense ratio and disclosed shareholder or service fees, along with plan-level charges. The Department of Labor explains how to review 401(k) plan fee information.
  • Rebalance on a schedule or when needed. Bring the portfolio back toward the intended mix when market movements push it materially off course, following the plan’s procedures and any trading limits.

How much should be in stocks versus bonds?

The sources cited here do not establish one stock-and-bond split that is appropriate for every participant. A suitable allocation depends on your time horizon, risk tolerance, other retirement holdings, expected income, and plan menu. Rather than treating a rule of thumb as a personal recommendation, compare the risk and holdings of the available options and choose a mix you can maintain. If your circumstances are complex or you need individualized advice, consider consulting a qualified fiduciary financial professional.
