Best Travel Insurance for Seniors: How to Choose the Right Policy

For senior travelers, the best policy depends on existing health coverage, destination, age, and medical needs. Compare written terms for overseas treatment, evacuation, and exclusions.

There is no single travel insurance policy established as best for every senior traveler. For U.S. seniors traveling internationally, start by checking existing health coverage, then compare emergency medical care, medical evacuation, age eligibility, pre-existing-condition terms, and trip cancellation coverage. The right choice depends on the traveler, destination, and trip; read the policy certificate and exclusions before buying.

What senior travelers should look for first

Compare policies using the same traveler details and itinerary so the differences are meaningful. Focus on the protection you need rather than a headline benefit or a provider list.

  • Emergency medical: Check covered expenses, benefit limit, deductible, how bills are paid or reimbursed, and whether preauthorization is required.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation: Confirm what circumstances qualify, where the traveler can be transported, whether the insurer or assistance provider coordinates the evacuation, and the benefit limit. The CDC says evacuation from a remote area to a high-quality hospital could cost more than $100,000; that is a possible cost cited by the CDC, not an average or guaranteed bill. CDC travel insurance guidance.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Read the policy’s definition, any look-back period, medical-stability rules, declaration requirements, and waiver terms and deadlines. Disclosing a condition does not by itself mean it is covered.
  • Age and trip eligibility: Verify the maximum age, trip-duration limits, destinations, and whether age affects benefits or premiums in the current policy documents.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption: Check which reasons qualify, what trip costs are covered, and the exclusions. Cancellation protection and overseas medical coverage are not interchangeable.
  • Practical assistance: Find out whether 24-hour help is available, whether direct payment arrangements are offered, what documents are needed, and how to contact the insurer before treatment or evacuation.

Check Medicare and other coverage before buying

Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the United States, and travelers pay the costs in most cases. Medicare describes limited exceptions; some Medigap policies may cover emergency care abroad, but terms vary. Check the documents for your own Original Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, employer, or private health plan, and ask the insurer what applies at your destination. See Medicare’s information on travel outside the U.S. and the State Department’s guidance for travelers age 65 and older.

The State Department recommends considering travel coverage for emergency medical, dental, and evacuation services. Its age-65+ guidance also advises travelers to confirm out-of-network coverage abroad with their current health insurer. The department’s travel insurance page was last updated August 11, 2025, according to its search listing; verify its current guidance when planning a trip.

How age and health conditions affect the search

The CDC says specialized insurance may be particularly beneficial for travelers over 65 and for people with pre-existing medical conditions. It advises travelers over 75 to begin researching early because coverage for underlying conditions can be harder to obtain. This is general guidance, not a promise that a particular insurer will accept a traveler or cover a condition. Verify eligibility and exclusions in the current policy documents. See the CDC Yellow Book travel insurance chapter.

When reviewing condition-related terms, look beyond a policy’s summary. Confirm how it defines a pre-existing condition and whether any stability requirement or waiver applies to the traveler’s circumstances. Do not rely on a verbal assurance in place of the written contract.

Is emergency-medical-only travel insurance an option?

Some travelers want medical protection without trip cancellation benefits. Compare policies that offer the medical coverage you need, and confirm whether emergency care, evacuation, and any required assistance services are included. A trip cancellation policy might not cover medical care abroad, so a separate travel health policy may be needed. The CDC explains this distinction in its travel insurance guidance.

How to compare policies for your trip

  1. Write down the trip details. Note each traveler’s age, destination, dates, trip length, planned activities, and any relevant health conditions.
  2. Ask existing insurers what they cover. Confirm overseas medical and out-of-network coverage, any limits, and the steps to get care or seek reimbursement.
  3. Get comparable quotes. Use the same travelers and trip details for each quote. The CDC lists InsureMyTrip and Squaremouth as examples of third-party comparison websites; it does not endorse either service or any insurer. CDC travel insurance guidance.
  4. Read the policy certificate and exclusions. Check medical and evacuation benefits, covered destinations and activities, condition-related terms, cancellation reasons, assistance procedures, and requirements for contacting the insurer.
  5. Confirm details before purchase. Ask the insurer to clarify any term that affects the trip, and rely on the applicable written policy for the final coverage decision.

No current, matched quote comparison or plan-specific age limit is established here, so a ranking, price, waiver deadline, or eligibility promise would be misleading. The CDC also states that it does not endorse any provider or medical insurance company in its travel insurance guidance.
