What “under $50,000” means in this comparison
The prices below are starting MSRPs or publication-displayed starting prices, not estimated out-the-door totals. A model qualifies when its listed starting price is below $50,000; it may have higher trims above the cap. Car and Driver’s displayed price ranges show this clearly for the Passport, Palisade Hybrid, and Grand Highlander Hybrid.
These are selected candidates, not a complete ranking of every 2026 SUV. Car and Driver describes its list as vehicles priced from $40,000 to $50,000 that made its 10Best or Editors’ Choice lists, and some displayed model ranges extend beyond $50,000. Its rankings draw on instrumented testing and editors’ impressions, using roughly 200 data points across acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment. If you are comparing the RAV4 with the CR-V Hybrid, use the figures with their labels intact: Toyota provides trim-specific city/highway estimates, while the CR-V figures above include both Honda’s rating and Car and Driver’s separate combined range.
2026 Mazda CX-50: another compact option
Car and Driver lists the 2026 Mazda CX-50 at a $31,395 starting price and 25 mpg combined. Those are the publication’s displayed figures, not a manufacturer quote. The evidence available here does not establish a trim-by-trim price or a comparable fuel-economy breakdown, so check the precise model and configuration before comparing it with the RAV4 or CR-V Hybrid. 2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: prioritize cabin size, then verify trim

- For a trim-specific price and economy comparison: The RAV4 page gives Toyota’s prices and estimates for six trims, all with listed starting MSRPs below $50,000.
- For a larger two-row SUV: Consider the Passport, but check the trim price because Car and Driver’s displayed range reaches above the budget.
- For three rows and hybrid power: Compare the Palisade Hybrid and Grand Highlander Hybrid by the exact configuration. Each starts below $50,000 in Car and Driver’s listing, while some Palisade Hybrid configurations exceed it.
- For a compact alternative or off-road focus: Investigate the CX-50 or Bronco, respectively, with exact trim pricing and equipment in hand.
These sources do not provide a complete same-trim, same-method comparison of seating, cargo capacity, drivetrain, comfort, and total cost across the candidates. Use them to narrow the list, then compare the exact configurations you could buy.
How to confirm the real price before buying
- Pick the exact model year and trim. Make sure the listing is for a 2026 vehicle; a starting price for one trim does not establish the price of another.
- Get a written quote for the configuration. Ask the dealer to itemize the vehicle price, options, destination charge, and any dealer adjustment. Starting MSRP is not an out-the-door estimate.
- Add local taxes and fees. Include sales tax, title, and registration to see whether the total fits your actual spending limit.
- Check local inventory and availability. The published price pages do not establish what is in stock or what a dealer will charge in your area.
- Recheck the model year and price close to purchase. The Honda page also displays newer 2027 entries; use the 2026 figures above only for the 2026 models.
2026 models not established by these price sources
This shortlist should not be read as proof that other SUVs are ineligible. The Kia Sportage page available for review showed the 2027 model year, not 2026 pricing. The Subaru Forester page did not provide usable pricing information, and direct Mazda and Hyundai model-page attempts did not return usable details. Those limitations do not establish whether those models qualify; they simply mean the prices above do not support a 2026 recommendation for them.
