Fidelity is the strongest all-around choice for most U.S. iPhone investors in 2026. It combines taxable and retirement accounts, $0 online U.S. stock and most ETF commissions, dollar-based fractional investing from $1, recurring purchases, research and broad customer support. It is not the right answer for everyone: Robinhood is simpler, Webull is better suited to active chart users, Interactive Brokers is stronger for international markets, Schwab fits households consolidating banking and investing, and Acorns is designed for automation.

This guide covers U.S. products and uses information available through August 2026. Features, rates, fees, eligibility and app-store listings can change, so confirm terms before depositing money. No app guarantees investment returns.

What counts as a stock-market app?

These products are not interchangeable:

  • Brokerage apps open or service taxable and retirement accounts, execute orders, hold securities and provide statements and tax forms. Fidelity, Schwab, Robinhood, Webull, Interactive Brokers, E*TRADE and Vanguard fit here.
  • Automated-investing apps build and rebalance portfolios for a goal, usually from recurring deposits. Acorns, Wealthfront and SoFi Automated Investing are examples.
  • Research apps provide quotes, charts, screeners, news and alerts but may not custody assets or execute trades. TradingView, Yahoo Finance, Seeking Alpha and Stock Rover are in this category.
  • Banking apps with investing, such as Cash App or SoFi, trade convenience for potentially narrower account and research choices.

Choose the category first. A charting app should not be judged as though it were an IRA custodian.

Quick comparison

App Best for Key strengths Major limitation
Fidelity Investments Most investors Broad account range, $0 online U.S. stock and most ETF commissions, $1 fractional investing, recurring purchases and research Less immediately minimalist than app-first rivals
Schwab Mobile Bank-and-brokerage households Large full-service ecosystem, banking integration and Stock Slices Fractional-stock universe is narrower; verify the current eligible list
Robinhood Simple mobile trading Easy stock, ETF and options order entry, alerts and crypto access Gold, margin, crypto and prediction-market products have separate costs, risks and protections
Webull Active traders 60-plus indicators, Level 2, paper trading, options tools and overnight sessions advertised in its listing Complexity and leverage can overwhelm beginners
Interactive Brokers International and advanced investors Global reach, complex orders and vendor-advertised fractional access to more than 10,500 eligible U.S. stocks and ETFs Steeper learning curve
Acorns Hands-off beginners Recurring deposits and portfolio automation Subscription can be expensive relative to a small balance
Vanguard Vanguard-fund investors Low-cost index-fund ecosystem and retirement focus Narrower fractional scope and fewer active-trading tools
TradingView or Yahoo Finance Research and monitoring Charts, watchlists, news and alerts Usually not a substitute for a brokerage account

Apple’s U.S. investing collection includes many of these apps, but inclusion or an app-store rating does not establish execution quality or suitability: Apple’s investing-app collection.

Best iPhone brokerage apps

Fidelity: best overall

Fidelity is the most balanced default for a beginner who may eventually need an IRA, a taxable account, mutual funds, bonds or more research. Fidelity says its retail brokerage has no account minimum or account fee, online U.S. stock and most ETF trades are commission-free, and eligible fractional stock and ETF purchases can start at $1. Its mobile app supports trading, portfolio management, watchlists and research.

Confirm the exact securities, account registrations and fractional-order rules before opening an account. Fidelity’s product overview is at Fidelity’s investment overview; mobile features and pricing are at Fidelity mobile trading and fractional terms at Fidelity fractional shares.

Choose it if: you want one provider for monthly ETF purchases, retirement saving and future complexity. Skip it if: your top priority is the simplest possible interface or a social-trading feel.

Schwab Mobile: best for banking consolidation

Schwab suits households wanting a major brokerage alongside Schwab banking and other financial services. Stock Slices provide fractional purchases of selected companies, but the eligible universe and sale or transfer rules are narrower than at Fidelity or Interactive Brokers. Check current terms in Schwab’s Stock Slices document before relying on a specific stock.

Choose it if: branch access, banking integration and a broad full-service relationship matter. Skip it if: you need broad fractional ETF coverage or an ultra-minimalist app.

Robinhood: best for simple mobile order entry

Robinhood emphasizes fast, app-first trading in stocks, ETFs and options, with crypto and other products available under separate disclosures. Its U.S. App Store listing showed Robinhood Gold at $5 per month and advertised 3.35% APY on uninvested cash for eligible Gold customers; both are time-sensitive terms, not permanent rates. See the listing at Robinhood on the App Store and product disclosures at Robinhood Invest.

Rank #2

Choose it if: you understand the products you are selecting and value quick mobile workflows. Skip it if: you need the broadest retirement, mutual-fund, bond or international-account choices, or if notifications and speculative products could encourage overtrading.

Webull: best for active charting and paper trading

Webull’s current listing advertises more than 60 technical indicators, 17-plus complex charting tools, Level 2 Advance, paper trading, alerts and overnight trading, as well as $0 commissions on advertised stock, ETF and options trades. These are advertised capabilities, not an independent speed or fill-quality test. Details are in Webull’s App Store listing.

Choose it if: you already understand order types, extended-hours liquidity, options and margin. Skip it if: you are seeking a set-and-forget ETF plan.

Interactive Brokers: best for international and advanced users

Interactive Brokers is a strong candidate for experienced investors needing international access, complex orders or detailed cost comparisons. Its official page advertises fractional trading from USD 1 in more than 10,500 eligible U.S. stocks and ETFs, with some Canadian and European securities also eligible. That count is the broker’s claim and the eligible list can change: Interactive Brokers fractional trading.

Choose it if: market breadth and control outweigh a learning curve. Skip it if: you want guided portfolio construction and very simple navigation.

Vanguard: best for a Vanguard-centered long-term portfolio

Vanguard remains relevant for investors committed to its index-fund ecosystem and retirement discipline. Its comparison page lists $0 online stock and ETF commissions for Vanguard and several competitors, with comparison data dated July 30, 2026. The same page shows that cash treatment and other features differ materially among providers: Vanguard fee comparison.

Automated and research alternatives

Acorns: best for automation

Acorns can make recurring deposits and diversified, portfolio-based investing easy. Its subscription pricing is plan-dependent, so calculate the annual fee as a percentage of your balance. A flat recurring fee can consume a meaningful share of a small account, and automation does not remove market risk or guarantee a target outcome.

TradingView and Yahoo Finance: research companions

TradingView is aimed at technical charts, alerts, screeners and multi-broker monitoring; Yahoo Finance is useful for quotes, news, watchlists and portfolio tracking. Use either alongside a broker when you need stronger research than your custody app provides. Apple Stocks is convenient for basic headlines and watchlists, not a complete trading or retirement platform.

Best app by investor profile

  • First monthly ETF purchase: Fidelity for fractional investing, recurring purchases and account breadth.
  • Roth or traditional IRA: Fidelity, Schwab or Vanguard; compare beneficiaries, investments, transfers and tax documents rather than interface design.
  • Small-dollar investor: Fidelity or Interactive Brokers, after confirming the exact fractional-security list and execution rules.
  • Active stock trader: Webull for charting and paper trading, or Interactive Brokers for broader advanced functionality.
  • International investor: Interactive Brokers, subject to country, exchange, currency and tax availability.
  • Automated investor: Acorns if its subscription is reasonable for your balance and you want portfolio automation.
  • Bank-and-brokerage household: Schwab.
  • Research-first investor who already has a broker: TradingView or Yahoo Finance.
  • Options, margin, crypto or prediction-market beginner: do not choose on convenience alone; understand approval, leverage, liquidity, custody and loss limits first.

What to compare before opening an account

Account registration and investments

Confirm support for the account you actually need: individual taxable, joint, traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, custodial, 529, trust or business. Then check access to stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, Treasuries, corporate bonds, options, futures, crypto, IPOs and international securities. A broker can advertise broad access while restricting products by account type or eligibility.

Fractional-share mechanics

Ask whether fractions include ETFs, whether recurring dollar purchases are supported, when orders execute, whether dividends are paid proportionally and whether fractions transfer through ACATS. Some brokers liquidate residual fractions during a transfer, and a fractional order may not accept every order type. Fidelity states that fractional orders have special execution and agreement terms at its fractional-share disclosure.

Total cost, not just commission

$0 online stock or ETF commission does not mean zero cost. Compare bid-ask spreads, options contract fees, regulatory fees, margin interest, data subscriptions, crypto spreads, premium memberships, wires, transfers, foreign-exchange charges and fund expense ratios. Vanguard’s dated comparison illustrates why headline commission alone is inadequate.

Cash treatment

Identify the default sweep vehicle, current APY or seven-day yield, whether a subscription is required, and whether cash is held in a bank sweep or money-market fund. Rates vary. To test a premium feature, use: annual subscription cost ÷ additional annual yield. Compare like products and include taxes; a bank APY and a money-market yield are not the same protection or product.

Trading and research tools

Check market, limit, stop, stop-limit, trailing-stop and conditional orders; streaming versus delayed quotes; pre-market, after-hours and overnight sessions; options-chain and multi-leg entry; short selling; paper trading; screeners; filings; analyst research; alerts; recurring investing; dividend reinvestment; and whether iPhone, iPad and web interfaces stay synchronized.

Leaving the broker

Before funding, find the transfer-out fee, ACATS support, fractional-share liquidation policy, cost-basis transfer process, account-closing procedure and downloadable statements and tax forms. Portability is part of suitability.

Five-step selection process

  1. Choose the job: brokerage, automated investing, research, or a combination.
  2. Choose the registration: taxable, Roth IRA, traditional IRA, joint, custodial or another supported type.
  3. List non-negotiables: required securities, fractional ETFs, recurring buys, options, international exchanges, cash access or charting.
  4. Calculate total cost: include spreads, contracts, margin, subscriptions, fund expenses, transfers and currency conversion.
  5. Verify protection and portability: read the current customer agreement, SIPC or FDIC disclosures, authentication options, support channels and iPhone compatibility before depositing.

Protection, security and common failure modes

SIPC is not protection from market losses

SIPC generally addresses a member brokerage’s failure and missing securities or cash within statutory limits; it does not reimburse a decline in a stock or fund. FDIC insurance applies to qualifying bank deposits, not ordinary securities and not every brokerage cash balance. A cash sweep can change which protection applies. Crypto and prediction-market products may involve different entities and arrangements. The app brand alone does not identify the legal custodian.

Use the broker’s current customer agreement and protection disclosures for product-specific limits. A secondary explanation of the market-loss distinction is available from StockBrokers.com’s mobile-trading guide.

Account-opening problems

State or country restrictions, age, identity checks, tax status, unsupported account registrations and options or margin approval can prevent opening an account. Complete verification and confirm the desired account type before transferring money. An App Store country mismatch can also hide the correct listing.

Unexpected market-order fills

A market order prioritizes execution, not price. Volatility, thin liquidity and extended-hours sessions can produce materially different fills. A limit order controls the worst acceptable price but may not execute.

Outages and connectivity

Keep the broker’s web login and official support number available. If an order appears to fail, check order status and confirmations before submitting it again. Enable two-factor authentication, biometric login and account alerts, and download statements and tax forms rather than relying on the phone app as your only record.

Editorial verdict

Choose Fidelity for the broadest fit across beginner investing, recurring ETFs, fractional purchases and retirement accounts. Choose Schwab when banking consolidation matters. Choose Robinhood for simple mobile execution after evaluating its separate premium and speculative products. Choose Webull for active charting and paper trading. Choose Interactive Brokers for international reach and advanced control. Choose Acorns when automation is worth its subscription. Use TradingView or Yahoo Finance as research companions when your existing broker’s analysis is insufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are commission-free stock trades really free?

No. Spreads, options-contract charges, regulatory fees, margin interest, subscriptions, fund expenses, transfer charges, foreign-exchange costs and crypto spreads can still apply.

Can I transfer fractional shares to another broker?

Often not. The receiving broker may reject fractions, or the delivering broker may liquidate residual fractions; check both firms’ current transfer rules before moving an account.

Is cash in an investing app FDIC insured?

Only qualifying bank deposits receive FDIC insurance. Brokerage securities generally involve SIPC protection, and money-market funds or crypto have different arrangements. Identify the legal product and custodian.
