Best Skin Care Products for Kids: What to Choose by Age and Skin Need

Most kids need only a mild cleanser when needed, moisturizer for dryness, and age-appropriate sun protection. Learn how to choose products for sensitive skin, eczema, and tweens or teens.

For most children, the best skin care is a short routine: a mild, fragrance-free cleanser when needed, moisturizer for dry skin, and age-appropriate sun protection. Choose by the child’s skin needs and what they tolerate—not by a “best brand” ranking. No head-to-head comparison establishes one universally best product.

What to look for in kids’ skin care

Start with the fewest products that address an actual need. For sensitive or eczema-prone skin, prioritize fragrance-free products. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) cautions that “unscented” is not the same as fragrance-free: an unscented product may contain fragrance used to mask other odors. “Natural” or “hypoallergenic” on a label alone does not guarantee that a product will not cause a reaction.

  • Cleanser: Choose a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and use it when needed. For children with eczema, AAD advises avoiding bar soaps, which can dry and irritate skin.
  • Moisturizer: For ordinary dryness, choose a formula the child tolerates and will use. For eczema-related dry skin, a cream or ointment is generally more effective than lotion; fragrance-free petroleum jelly is another option.
  • Sunscreen: For children at least six months old, look for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. For eczema-prone skin, AAD recommends fragrance-free sunscreen with titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide as active ingredients.

For children with eczema, the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance can help identify products intended for eczema-prone skin, but a seal does not mean every product will suit every child. Consider cost, access, and the child’s comfort and tolerability as well as the label. The American Academy of Pediatrics discusses these factors in its clinical report on atopic dermatitis management.

Choose sunscreen according to age

Infants younger than six months

AAD advises keeping infants under six months in the shade and using protective clothing rather than relying on sunscreen. Follow current product age labeling and ask the child’s clinician if you have concerns about an individual situation.

Children six months and older

Choose broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. For a child with eczema-prone skin, AAD recommends a fragrance-free formula with titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. Check the current package for the product’s age directions and ingredients; formulas and labels can change. See AAD’s guidance on finding eczema-friendly products.

Adjust the routine for eczema-prone skin

Moisturizer is central to managing eczema-related dryness, but ordinary skin care is not a replacement for medical treatment when a child needs it. AAD says moisturizer is especially important for mild eczema and recommends applying it at least twice a day. Creams and ointments generally relieve eczema-related dry skin more effectively than lotions.

Make bathing less drying

  1. Use warm water, not hot, and keep baths to five or ten minutes.
  2. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser only where needed.
  3. Pat the skin so it is partially dry, then apply moisturizer.

These bathing steps follow AAD’s tips for helping a child with eczema feel better.

Know when to ask a clinician

AAD says over-the-counter products may be enough for mild eczema, but advises caregivers to speak with the pediatrician before using over-the-counter eczema medicine. AAD notes that 1% hydrocortisone ointment can help, but it should be used only when needed and with that medical guidance. For moderate-to-severe eczema, work with a dermatologist. If a child repeatedly reacts to products, ask a dermatologist about identifying triggers instead of cycling through many new products. AAD’s guidance on when a child with eczema should see a dermatologist explains when to seek specialist care.

Pediatric eczema affects up to 25% of children worldwide, according to the AAD’s April 7, 2026 announcement of its first pediatric atopic dermatitis guidelines. The figure is global and expressed as “up to,” not a rate for every country or age group. In that announcement, AAD President Murad Alam, MD, FAAD, urged families: “Please partner with a board-certified dermatologist to get expert care for your child’s eczema.” Read the AAD announcement.

What tweens and teens need

Children and adolescents generally do not need adult-targeted products or complicated routines by default. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren recommends a simple routine for tweens and teens: a gentle, fragrance-free, pH-balanced cleanser; a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer; and daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher mineral sunscreen. Persistent acne, eczema, irritation, or another ongoing skin problem calls for advice from a pediatrician or dermatologist rather than adding more products. See HealthyChildren’s guidance on trendy skin care for tweens and teens.

How to compare products before buying

Since the sources do not establish a single best brand, compare products on the features that matter for the child and the intended use:

  • Cleanser: Check that it is mild and fragrance-free, and consider whether the child needs a cleanser at all.
  • Moisturizer: Match the texture to the need—lotion for a child who prefers it, or a cream or ointment for eczema-related dryness—and account for comfort and regular use.
  • Sunscreen: Check broad-spectrum coverage, SPF, age directions, active ingredients, and fragrance status.
  • Practicality: Consider cost, availability, and how the child’s skin responds. A product’s category or label cannot guarantee that it will suit every child.
