There is no verified list of “2023 winners” behind this headline, so it would be misleading to name products as tested or selected that year. For most tweens and teens, the sound starting point is a simple routine: a gentle cleanser, a fragrance-free moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. The right choices depend on age, skin needs, and the current product label.

What skin care do kids actually need?

For tweens and teens, basic care usually means cleansing gently, moisturizing, and protecting skin from the sun. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ mineral sunscreen; the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) likewise advises gentle cleansing, a fragrance-free moisturizer, and broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen. AAP guidance for tweens and teens and the AAD’s 2025 guide to skincare as children grow support keeping the routine straightforward.

As pediatric dermatologist Teresa Wright, MD, FAAD, FAAP, puts it in the AAP article: “If kids learn to wash their face, moisturize, and wear sunscreen every day, they’re already ahead of the curve.” That is a useful standard for judging a routine: consistent basics matter more than a crowded shelf.

How to choose cleanser and moisturizer

Choose mild, fragrance-free cleansing

Look for a mild cleanser and check the ingredient list and age directions on the current label. For sensitive skin, fragrance-free is a useful screening choice; AAP guidance also recommends fragrance-free body wash and lotion for families trying to reduce exposure to fragrance. AAP tips for choosing safer personal-care products explain this approach.

  • [INSTANT PUMP FOAM – FUN & EASY] One pump delivers a cloud of soft bubbles instantly – no lathering needed. Coconut-derived cleansers create rich foam kids love. Makes daily skincare routine quick and enjoyable for busy families.

Match moisturizer texture to the skin

A fragrance-free moisturizer is a practical default. For eczema-prone skin, creams, ointments, and petroleum jelly are among the options discussed in dermatology guidance; a richer texture may suit skin that needs more help retaining moisture. The AAD recommends regular moisturizing as part of childhood eczema care. AAD tips for helping a child with eczema and the AAP’s eczema treatment guidance give condition-specific advice.

Choose sunscreen by age and label

For infants younger than six months

The FDA says sunscreen is not recommended for infants under six months. Prioritize shade and protective clothing, and consult a doctor before applying sunscreen. See the FDA’s guidance on sunscreen for infants.

For children older than six months

Follow the sunscreen’s Drug Facts label, including its directions and age guidance. For tweens and teens, AAP and AAD guidance supports broad-spectrum SPF 30+ protection; the AAD also specifies water resistance. Product directions can differ by form, so check the label rather than assuming every sunscreen is used the same way. The FDA explains this in its sunscreen guidance.

Why a longer or more expensive routine is not automatically better

Retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids are often marketed for concerns that young children generally do not have, and these active ingredients may irritate skin. A dermatologist may recommend treatment ingredients for a specific condition, but they are not necessary additions to every child’s routine. AAD dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD, says: “I try to emphasize to my own children that skincare doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective, and just because something looks fun to use or is expensive, doesn’t mean it is good or better for your skin.” The AAD’s 2025 guide discusses ingredients and age-appropriate care.

When to ask a clinician

Eczema care is more than choosing a cosmetic moisturizer. The AAD advises warm rather than hot baths, using cleanser only when needed, and moisturizing regularly. If a child’s skin problem persists, is severe, or needs treatment beyond basic care, speak with the child’s clinician or a dermatologist rather than adding stronger products on your own.

  • For sunscreen, whether it is broad-spectrum, its SPF, its water-resistance claims where relevant, and its form-specific directions.

Those criteria can help narrow choices, but they do not establish a universally best product or verify any 2023 winners. Labels and guidance can change, so check current packaging and consult a clinician for individual skin conditions.
