There is no verified “best” short-term personal loan offer in the information available here: lender rates, fees, eligibility, and state availability were not confirmed. Instead, compare actual offers by APR, total repayment, payment schedule, fees, and what happens if you cannot pay. A fixed-payment personal installment loan is not the same product as a payday loan, even when both are marketed as short-term borrowing.

What counts as a short-term personal loan?

“Short-term personal loan” is not a consistently defined product category. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes personal installment loans as closed-end credit: you receive a sum up front and repay it in fixed installments over a set period. The CFPB says these loans can range from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars or more, with terms from a few months to several years; those are general ranges, not the terms of a particular offer. The phrase “short-term” can also have a narrower legal meaning in a particular context. A CFPB FAQ describes loans requiring repayment within 45 days as short-term loans covered by the Payday Lending Rule. That rule-specific scope is not a universal definition for personal loans. Personal installment loans and payday loans are different

A personal installment loan generally has fixed payments across a specified term. A payday loan is usually a small, high-cost loan due on the borrower’s next payday. The repayment structure and cost can differ sharply, so do not treat the labels as interchangeable. CFPB: What is a personal installment loan? CFPB: What is a payday loan?

For a sense of how a short repayment period affects cost, the CFPB’s 2024 example says a $15 fee per $100 borrowed for a two-week payday loan equates to an APR of almost 400%. This is an illustrative payday-loan calculation, not an average rate or a quote for every short-term loan. The CFPB’s advice is direct: “Focus on APRs.” CFPB: What is a payday loan? How to compare short-term loan offers

Compare written offers side by side. APR is important, but it does not replace checking the amount you will receive, the payment schedule, and the total you must repay. The final loan documents and required disclosures—not a headline rate or preliminary estimate—show the terms of your actual offer. CFPB: What is APR? CFPB Truth in Lending resources

What to compare What to check
APR and required fees Record the APR and every fee required to get the loan. Do not compare only a periodic interest rate or flat fee.
Amount received and total repayment Note the amount financed, any fee withheld from the proceeds, and the total of scheduled payments.
Payment schedule and term Compare the payment amount, frequency, first due date, and number of payments. Check that each payment fits your budget.
Rate and late-payment terms Check whether the rate is fixed or variable, what late fees may apply, and what other consequences the contract sets out.
Eligibility and state availability Confirm that the lender offers the product where you live and review the terms you are actually approved for.
Options if repayment becomes difficult Ask how to request hardship assistance and what a modified or missed payment could mean for fees, collections, and credit reporting.

APR lets you compare borrowing costs over time; the CFPB specifically recommends using it to compare payday loans with installment loans or credit cards. A lower-looking fee by itself is not enough to establish that an offer costs less. CFPB: What is APR?

What affects approval and loan terms?

Lenders may consider your credit history and reports, income, debts, requested loan amount and term, state-law rate limits, and sometimes transactions in your bank account. These are general underwriting factors, not a promise of approval, a particular rate, or a specific loan amount. CFPB: What is a personal installment loan?

State rules also affect whether payday lending is permitted and what terms are allowed. The CFPB notes that some states do not permit payday loans, while some allow rollovers or renewals that extend the due date and add fees. Verify availability and the applicable terms for your state directly with the lender. CFPB: What is a payday loan?

Questions to ask before signing

  • How much will I receive after any fees are withheld, and what is the total amount I must repay?
  • What are the payment amount, frequency, first due date, and number of payments?
  • Is the interest rate fixed or variable, and what fees apply if a payment is late?
  • How do I request hardship assistance? Could a payment be moved or modified, and what fees or reporting consequences might follow?

Do not assume a lender offers a particular accommodation. Ask for its policies and read the contract and disclosures before accepting the loan.

If you may miss a payment

Contact the lender as soon as possible. The CFPB says possible options may include deferment, forbearance, or a payment plan; these are possibilities to ask about, not guaranteed remedies. Missed payments may lead to third-party debt collection and may be reported to one or more major credit-reporting companies. CFPB: What is a personal installment loan?
