Why this is an eight-product update, not the original “12 best” list
The historic title is associated with a PEOPLE story presented as “The 12 Best Shampoos for Thinning Hair of 2023, Tested and Reviewed.” The accessible historic excerpt confirms the title and expert context, but not the original twelve selections or the complete testing method. The linked PEOPLE page now carries a different title and was updated May 2, 2026. Its current comparison names eight products. Those eight should not be passed off as the original 2023 picks.
PEOPLE says testers tried 43 shampoos during 205 showers over three months. Participants had varied hair types and concerns, including shedding, postpartum loss, heat damage, and genetic alopecia. They averaged about three uses a week, assessed ease of use, visible shedding, thickness or new growth, cleansing, and value, and recorded notes at the two-month point. These are publisher-reported consumer observations, not a clinical trial. PEOPLE reports mixed results: some testers perceived less shedding or early “baby hairs,” while others noticed little or no density change.

Choose by the result you want from a shampoo
For an immediately fuller-looking style
PEOPLE’s reports for Briogeo Destined for Density, Kérastase Densifique, and Ouai Fine Hair describe perceived body, fullness, texture, or bounce. Those are appearance and styling outcomes. They can matter when the goal is for hair to look fuller, but they do not demonstrate new follicles or a change in the underlying cause of thinning.
For cleansing feel or fewer strands noticed during grooming
The Paul Mitchell tester liked the rinse and scalp feel and noticed fewer strands while detangling. The Vegamour tester liked a non-stripping cleanse but did not perceive a major shedding reduction. These are distinct experiences: a comfortable cleanse is not the same as less shedding, and seeing fewer hairs during detangling is not the same as medically treating hair loss.

For a product marketed around growth or shedding
The Mielle and Nécessaire entries include testers’ perceptions of new growth or reduced fallout. Treat those as anecdotes from PEOPLE’s consumer testing, not as proof that the shampoos cause regrowth or address a medical condition. Ingredients such as rosemary, biotin, peptides, and caffeine may appear in hair-care marketing, but the claims and regulatory status of a cosmetic shampoo should not be equated with an established hair-loss treatment.
What shampoo can—and cannot—tell you about thinning
Thinning can reflect different causes, and the right response depends on identifying which one is involved. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) states, “Effective treatment for hair loss begins with finding the cause.” A board-certified dermatologist can assess hair loss through medical history, scalp examination, and hair testing; when appropriate, evaluation may include blood tests or a scalp biopsy. AAD notes that no single treatment works for everyone.

A shampoo may cleanse the scalp, affect how hair feels or styles, and help reduce breakage from handling or grooming. Those effects are not interchangeable with treating a hair-loss condition. Persistent, sudden, patchy, or otherwise concerning loss is a reason to seek medical evaluation rather than relying on a shampoo comparison to identify the cause.
Minoxidil is a treatment, not a shampoo claim
AAD describes minoxidil as an at-home treatment that can help early hair loss. It is applied to the scalp as directed, usually once or twice daily; visible results usually take about six to twelve months, and continued daily use is needed to maintain benefit. This timeline applies to minoxidil, not shampoo. AAD also cautions that minoxidil cannot regrow an entire head of hair.
