Best Scope for 200 Yards: How to Choose the Right Optic

The best scope for 200 yards depends on your rifle and purpose. Compare usable magnification, reticle, parallax, and mounting fit before buying.

There is no single best rifle scope for every 200-yard shot. A variable-power scope is a versatile place to start, but the right choice depends on your rifle, intended use, likely shot distances, reticle, and fit. Compare those factors—not just maximum magnification—before buying.

What matters most at 200 yards?

Two hundred yards alone does not determine a required magnification. Hunting, informal target shooting, and precision-oriented shooting can call for different balances of field of view, reticle detail, adjustment controls, and weight. Choose an optic that works for the full distance range and shooting position you expect, not only the farthest shot.

  • Purpose and distance range: A hunting setup may prioritize a useful low-power view and manageable weight; target-focused use may place more value on reticle detail and repeatable adjustments.
  • Magnification range: Check both ends. The low setting should suit the closest likely shot, while the high setting should show enough target detail for your use. No universal minimum magnification for 200 yards is established.
  • Reticle: Make sure it is easy to see against your targets and background. If it has subtension marks for holding or ranging, check the manual for the magnification at which those marks are accurate.
  • Controls and weight: Consider whether you plan to hold with the reticle or dial adjustments, and whether turret style and total scope weight suit the rifle and its use.

How much magnification do you need?

Scope markings such as 3-15x describe the available magnification range: this example adjusts from 3x to 15x. The zoom ratio is the high number divided by the low number, so a 3-15x scope has a 5:1 ratio. The ratio describes the range, not how well the scope performs or what magnification is necessary at a particular distance. Leupold explains scope markings and objective size in its guide to riflescope numbers.

More maximum magnification is not automatically better. A high setting can make aiming easier when you need more target detail, but it is only one part of the decision; consider whether the lower setting remains useful and whether the scope’s weight, reticle, and controls suit the rest of your use. There is no evidence-based universal power setting for a 200-yard shot.

Focus, parallax, and reticle behavior

Diopter focus is for your eye

The eyepiece diopter adjusts the reticle’s apparent sharpness for your vision. Set it according to the scope manual so the reticle appears clear; it is not the control for correcting parallax.

Parallax adjustment is a separate feature

Side focus or an adjustable objective can bring the target image into focus at different distances and reduce apparent reticle movement relative to the target when your eye shifts. A scope may instead have fixed parallax. Check the specific model’s instructions for its adjustment range and operation; controls vary. See Leupold’s riflescope support guidance and Vortex’s FAQ on scope focus and parallax.

Monstrum Beast 6-24x50 Rifle Scope with Side Focus and Offset Scope Mount | Black | FIB04-MOA Daylight Bright Reticle
  • Long range optic from 6-24x magnification and a 50mm objective lens allowing for more light transmission and a wider field of view
  • Fiber optic reticles differ from traditional etched or wire reticles in that the light source is channeled through a fiber optic filament to the center of the reticle to produce a daylight bright center dot, similar to that of a red dot.
  • Includes a side focus parallax adjustment dial - that allows for sharper focus of the target image, elimination of parallax, and range estimation
  • Available in multiple newly designed second focal plane options: FIB04-MOA, FIB04-MIL, FIB05, and FIB06 reticle. Second focal plane reticles remain the same size at all magnification levels for high visibility at all magnifications.
  • Scope comes in a 30mm tube configuration and includes a Monstrum one piece cantilever scope mount. Also comes with a set of bikini lens covers.

Check the focal plane and subtensions

With a second-focal-plane reticle, the reticle stays the same apparent size as magnification changes, and its hold or ranging marks are accurate only at a specified power. For the model described in Leupold’s guidance, that is often maximum power. Confirm the correct setting in the scope manual rather than assuming it applies to every model. First-focal-plane reticles behave differently: their subtensions remain valid across magnification settings, though the reticle appears larger or smaller as power changes.

Confirm the scope will fit your rifle

Objective-lens diameter is the second number in a scope designation such as 3-15×44. A larger objective may require higher rings to clear the barrel or other parts of the rifle, which can affect cheek weld and overall fit. Before ordering rings or a mount, check all of the following:

Do not choose rings by objective diameter alone. Confirm the exact scope and rifle combination, and follow the firearm and optic manufacturers’ mounting instructions. If you cannot establish correct clearance or eye relief, ask a qualified gunsmith or optic installer to check the setup.

A current example—not a universal winner

The Leupold VX-5HD Gen 2 3-15×44 HTMR-MIL is one current manufacturer example of a variable-power scope with side focus. Its power range and focusing feature illustrate specifications to compare; they do not make it the best choice for every rifle, shooter, or budget. No controlled comparison establishes a best-performing scope for 200 yards, and current prices and warranty terms are not established here. Verify the exact configuration, availability, price, and warranty with the manufacturer or seller before purchase.

Zero the scope at the range

Choosing a scope and zeroing it are separate tasks. Leupold defines sighting in as aligning where the reticle points with where the barrel points. Its sighting-in instructions, published August 8, 2018, recommend starting at a shorter distance when the intended zero is 200 or 300 yards, then completing sight-in at the desired distance. That is manufacturer guidance, not a universal legal or safety standard.

  1. Mount and adjust the scope first. Follow the rifle, mount, and optic manuals, including instructions for eye relief and reticle alignment.
  2. Use bore-sighting only as an initial aid. A bore-sighting tool can help align the scope and barrel before live fire, but it does not prove the rifle is zeroed.
  3. Start closer if appropriate. For a planned 200-yard zero, Leupold recommends an initial sight-in at a shorter distance so you can bring the point of impact toward the aiming point.
  4. Confirm at the intended distance. At a suitable range with a safe backstop, shoot the rifle and ammunition you intend to use, make adjustments according to the optic manual, and verify the final zero with live fire.

If the rifle will not hold zero

Inconsistent point of impact is not automatically a scope defect. Leupold’s riflescope troubleshooting guide identifies possible contributors including alignment, the mounting system, ammunition, the rifle, and the shooter’s position, as well as focus, parallax, eye relief, and adjustment issues.
