This is a historical May 2023-focused comparison, not a claim about current prices or app availability. The original Android Headlines page is dated November 3, 2023, despite its “updated May 2023” label. Its nine-app list remains useful as a starting point: CV Engineer is the strongest choice for guided help, Canva for visual customization, and Microsoft Word for editing a conventional document. Features, prices, ratings, and store listings can change, so check the exact Android app and its export paywall before entering personal information.
Quick picks from the May 2023 comparison
| App | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| CV Engineer | Beginners who want prompts and examples | Dedicated builder; its official Android page currently describes guided creation, offline support, and Google Drive saving. Confirm whether the export and features you need are free. |
| Microsoft Word | Editing an existing resume or working in DOCX | General document editor, not a guided resume builder. Microsoft documents Android editing for .docx and .dotx files. |
| Canva | Creative roles and visual customization | General design tool with resume templates. Choose a readable, text-forward layout for ordinary online applications. |
| Resume Builder | Template variety, according to the 2023 comparison | Generic app name; identify the precise developer and Play Store listing before installing. Historical article details should not be treated as current. |
| Resume Builder App & CV Maker | Quick, guided creation | 2023 coverage reported more than 50 templates and PDF saving, but also a 3.8/5 rating and in-app purchase range of $0.99–$98.99 at that time. |
| Google Slides | Manual, freeform layout control | General presentation tool rather than a resume workflow; maintaining consistent text structure takes more effort. |
| Job seekers maintaining a professional profile | Networking and job-search platform, not a dedicated resume builder. Premium is not required just to create a basic resume. | |
| Resumaker and CV Maker | Potential alternatives | The available comparison does not establish enough about exact listings, current exports, pricing, or privacy to recommend either without checking the specific app. |
The feature descriptions, nine-app list, and historical figures in this table come from the 2023 comparison. Current CV Engineer features are described on its official Android page. A “free” download does not establish that PDF export, watermark-free output, or every template is free.
How to choose: a guided builder or an editor?
Dedicated builders such as CV Engineer, Resume Builder, Resume Builder App & CV Maker, Resumaker, and CV Maker generally organize information into resume sections and help users assemble a document. That can save time if you are starting from scratch, but do not assume that every app offers free exports, DOCX files, offline operation, or multiple versions.
Word, Canva, and Google Slides are general-purpose editing or design tools. They can offer more control, but you must make more decisions about structure and formatting. LinkedIn serves a different purpose: it supports an online professional identity and job search, rather than replacing a properly formatted downloadable resume.

Best guided workflow: CV Engineer
For a first resume or a phone-first workflow, CV Engineer is the clearest starting point in this group. Its current official Android page describes guided resume creation, recruiter-written advice and examples, photo editing, Google Drive saving, sharing, and offline support for Android phones and tablets. The same page currently reports more than 5 million users, more than 95,000 reviews, support for 13 languages, and a 4.6 rating; these are changing page signals, not May 2023 figures. See CV Engineer’s Android page.
Google Play currently labels the app “Contains ads” and “In-app purchases”; its listing also discloses possible sharing of certain data types with third parties. Check the current listing and the app’s own prompts before relying on a particular privacy or payment assumption: CV Engineer on Google Play. Offline support is useful, but it does not by itself establish that all processing stays on your device. The 2023 comparison reported a 4.5/5 rating and in-app purchases of $2.49–$14.99 at that time; neither figure should be read as a current price or rating.
Best for DOCX editing: Microsoft Word
If you already have a resume or an employer requests an editable Word file, Word is a practical choice. Microsoft’s Android documentation confirms editing for Word formats including .docx and .dotx: Microsoft’s Android Office guide. On a phone, precise spacing and page layout can be more awkward than entering information in a dedicated builder, and desktop formatting controls should not be assumed to be present in the same way.
The 2023 comparison listed Word as free to download and reported $1–$99.99 in in-app purchases, without identifying billing periods or which features those amounts covered. Treat that as historical context, not a current subscription quote. Word makes most sense when DOCX compatibility, Office tools, or broader Microsoft 365 functionality matters—not just because you need one resume. See Microsoft Word.

Best for visual customization: Canva
Canva is a design application rather than a resume-first workflow. The original comparison highlighted its templates and editable text, images, colors, and layouts. That flexibility is useful for design, media, branding, or portfolio-oriented applications, but extra decoration can make a resume harder to scan. For conventional online applications, choose a simple layout with readable text and familiar section headings. No template can guarantee acceptance by an applicant-tracking system; structure and the receiving employer’s system matter.
The comparison reported a $1.49–$119.99 in-app purchase range and a 4.7/5 Google Play rating in its 2023 snapshot. Those are not current prices or ratings. A reader who needs one restrained resume may not need to pay for broader design features. See Canva.
Template-heavy option: the app called Resume Builder
The 2023 article described an app named simply Resume Builder as offering more than 100 templates, guided creation, formatting controls, and PDF export, with no in-app purchases reported in that snapshot. Because several apps use similar names, those details are not enough to identify the product reliably. Before installing, match the developer, package ID, Play Store URL, and icon to the intended app. Do not assume a similarly named app shares its features, cost, or privacy practices.
Another guided option: Resume Builder App & CV Maker
The 2023 comparison described more than 50 templates, guided creation, color options, PDF saving, and sharing. It also reported a 3.8/5 rating and an in-app purchase range of $0.99–$98.99 at that time. A broad historical purchase range says little about what a particular export costs now. Test the complete path—create, save, and export—before investing time in the app. The listing identified in the source comparison is available at Google Play; user reports there are anecdotal and do not prove every user encounters the same restriction.

Manual alternatives: Google Slides and LinkedIn
Google Slides can work as a freeform layout tool if you are comfortable arranging a page yourself. It is not designed around resume sections, however, and a layout built from positioned elements can be harder to update consistently. The 2023 comparison included it as an unconventional alternative, not as a purpose-built builder.
LinkedIn is useful for maintaining a professional profile alongside a downloadable resume. The 2023 comparison’s $29.99–$323.88 in-app purchase range appears to relate to broader LinkedIn Premium purchasing, not a standalone resume-builder fee. Do not buy Premium just to create a basic resume; consider it only if its broader job-search or networking features suit you. Visit LinkedIn.
What the May 2023 list can—and cannot—tell you about price
The original comparison listed all nine apps as free to download. It reported in-app purchases for Word, CV Engineer, Canva, Resume Builder App & CV Maker, and LinkedIn, while several other entries were shown without purchases. These were store figures from the article’s 2023-era snapshot, not a reliable guide to what an app costs today. The page’s headline says “updated May 2023,” but its publication date is November 3, 2023; use it as a dated comparison rather than a current price list.
More importantly, download price and usable output are different questions. An app may let you enter details without charge but restrict a template, saving, or export. Before entering your work and contact history, confirm whether the version available in your region lets you export a clean file, whether that file has a watermark, and whether any trial or subscription renews. Current prices and purchase terms can vary by country, account, and app version.

Choose a format that fits the application
For most ordinary U.S. job applications, start with a concise, text-forward resume. PDF usually preserves layout when shared; DOCX is appropriate when an employer or application explicitly asks for an editable Word document. Neither format is universally preferred by every employer or application system, so follow the posting’s instructions.
- Use standard section headings and a straightforward chronology.
- Prefer a conventional single-column layout for general online applications. Avoid relying on decorative graphics, text boxes, or complex columns to carry essential information.
- Use readable type and restrained formatting; make contact details and links easy to find.
- Keep a plain version for conventional applications and, if useful for a visual role, a more designed version.
“ATS-friendly” is not a guarantee attached to a particular app or template. A selectable-text PDF, clear headings, and simple structure can make information easier to interpret, but the receiving system and its configuration affect how a file is processed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Resume or CV? Check the audience, not the app label
In U.S. job applications, a resume is generally a concise document tailored to a role. A CV may mean a longer academic or professional record, although many Android apps use “CV” as another word for resume. An app called CV Maker is not necessarily designed for an academic CV, and labels such as “biodata” may reflect other regional conventions.
For U.S. applications, do not add a photo or personal details that are unnecessary for the job unless the role or destination specifically calls for them. A template’s ability to include a photograph does not make one appropriate for every market.

Protect your information and verify the exact app
A resume can contain your phone number, email, employment history, education, and sometimes a home address. Before uploading or saving it, check the exact Play Store listing and the app’s privacy information. Look for account requirements, cloud backup, third-party sharing, AI processing, and ways to delete stored data. Store disclosures are developer-provided statements and can change; they are not an absolute privacy guarantee.
For example, CV Engineer’s current Google Play listing says it may share certain data types with third parties and labels the app as containing ads and in-app purchases. Review the live listing for the disclosure that applies when you install. A claim of offline support concerns use without a connection; it does not prove there is no analytics, cloud processing, or account-linked storage.
Generic names are another risk. “Resume Builder,” “CV Maker,” and “Resumaker” may refer to different products. Match the app name, developer, package ID, and listing URL before downloading, and do not transfer one product’s rating or pricing to a similarly named app. Resumaker and CV Maker appeared in the 2023 comparison, but the available details do not establish their current features, developers, prices, or export behavior.
Quick Recap
Check the exported file before applying
- Export the resume in the format requested by the employer. If no format is specified, keep a PDF for layout stability and a DOCX copy when editable text may be needed.
- Open the file itself—not just the preview inside the app—and confirm that the text is selectable.
- Inspect page breaks, spacing, date alignment, fonts, links, and any icons or images. Look for clipped text, substitutions, watermarks, and accidental blank pages.
- Check that the page size and final length suit the application. The 2023 comparison noted that app sizes varied by device; phone, tablet, Android version, country, and app version can also affect the experience.
- Use a clear filename, such as Jane_Doe_Marketing_Resume.pdf, and keep a copy of the source or resume content so it can be updated later.
Recommendations by situation
- Starting from scratch: Try CV Engineer for its documented guided workflow, then verify the current export terms before committing your details.
- Need to edit an existing Word file: Use Microsoft Word, especially if the employer requests DOCX.
- Applying for a visual role: Canva offers more design control; keep a plain version available for applications where a restrained format is preferable.
- Want a quick template: The 2023 comparison favored the generically named Resume Builder for template count, but first establish the exact app identity and whether its current export is free.
- Want a professional profile as well: Use LinkedIn for the profile and job-search side, not as a substitute for checking a resume file’s formatting.
- Considering Resumaker or CV Maker: Verify the exact listing, privacy details, and full export flow before relying on it; the historical comparison does not establish those current details.
