1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best backpack rain cover is the one that fits your fully loaded pack securely—not simply the one whose capacity label matches your pack’s listed volume. Gregory, Osprey and REI Co-op offer options in distinct size ranges, but the available specifications do not establish a tested overall winner or prove how any cover performs in a defined downpour. Use the examples below as a shortlist, then check fit, construction and attachment on your own pack.
How to choose the right pack rain-cover size
Start with the capacity of your loaded pack, then try the cover on the pack as you actually carry it. Capacity labels are useful for narrowing the options, but different brands’ packs can have different shapes, and the same stated volume does not guarantee the same fit.
Gregory advises: “A properly sized backpack raincover should fit securely over your loaded pack without stretching too much or leaving loose fabric.” Its guidance also says the cover should fit snugly with enough coverage to protect the pack’s main body from rain and splashes. Avoid a cover that is so tight it strains across the pack or so loose that fabric hangs freely.
- Load your pack with the gear you expect to carry, including items that change its shape or bulk.
- Check that the cover reaches over the main body and does not pull excessively at the edges.
- Check that it stays secure around the harness and hipbelt rather than obstructing or slipping off them.

These are examples with published size and feature details, not results from a controlled head-to-head rain test. Retailer listings and availability can change; verify the current listing and test the cover on your loaded pack before relying on the size label.

What to compare beyond capacity
Seams and coverage
Gregory describes its cover as waterproof and seam-taped; Osprey lists taped seams on its UltraLight cover. These are manufacturer or retailer product descriptions, not independent proof of performance in a specific rainfall intensity or duration. Check that the cover’s shape provides enough coverage for your pack’s main body.
Attachment and harness compatibility
A cover has to stay in place while you walk. Gregory lists an elasticized drawcord, hipbelt loops and an adjustable hook that clasps above the harnesses. Osprey’s listed design includes a drawcord. Compare the attachment arrangement with your pack’s harness and hipbelt, and make sure it does not block access or pull loose when the pack is loaded.

Weight, storage and visibility
If you carry a cover routinely, its listed weight and whether it packs into a storage pouch may matter. Gregory lists a pouch and reflective logo; those are useful details to compare, but they do not establish that another cover lacks equivalent features unless its product listing says so.
Drainage
Gregory lists a bottom drain hole. A drainage detail can matter if water gets inside the cover, but it should not be treated as a substitute for a secure fit or as proof that the pack itself will stay dry.

What a rain cover can—and cannot—tell you about protection
The product pages describe these covers as protection for rain or wet conditions, but the cited listings do not provide independent comparative results under a defined test, such as a specified rainfall rate and exposure time. A product description such as “waterproof” is not the same as a verified guarantee that your pack’s contents will remain dry in every storm.
For consequential gear, consider what the cover leaves exposed and how you will protect items inside the pack. Choose based on the loaded-pack fit and the features you need, not on a capacity range or a review score treated as a waterproof-performance test.
