Osprey lists both as 40-liter bags measuring 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 inches (55 × 35 × 23 cm) and describes them as meeting domestic carry-on size requirements. The practical distinction is fit: Farpoint is the men’s-fit model, while Fairview is designed for women. That manufacturer sizing claim is not a promise that every airline will accept either bag.

Osprey lists its weight as 3.23 lb (1.47 kg), and its features include a stowaway harness and hipbelt, a laptop sleeve for most laptops up to 16 inches, and compatibility with the same daypack. Farpoint 40 Extended Fit
For travelers who need more room in the harness, Osprey lists a Farpoint 40 Extended Fit with the same 40 L capacity and 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1-inch external dimensions. Its listed weight is 3.38 lb (1.53 kg). Osprey says its extended hipbelt fits hips up to 70 inches and that it has extended shoulder straps and a longer sternum strap. Farpoint 40 vs. Fairview 40: what should you compare?
The published specifications make the core comparison straightforward. The fit descriptions are the meaningful model distinction; try a pack on if possible and consider torso and shoulder comfort with the load you expect to carry. The slight difference in listed weight is a product specification, not evidence of a performance advantage.

Will the Farpoint 40 or Fairview 40 fit your airline’s carry-on rules?
Osprey’s statement that the standard packs meet domestic carry-on size requirements is the manufacturer’s claim, not a guarantee of acceptance by a particular carrier. The applicable rules depend on the airline and route. Before departure, check the operating carrier’s current cabin-bag dimensions and weight limit, and confirm whether its measurements include handles, wheels, or external pockets.

Also account for the bag as packed. A soft-sided backpack can bulge when overfilled, so its effective dimensions may differ from the published empty-bag measurements. If your itinerary includes multiple carriers, check each one rather than assuming one airline’s allowance applies to the whole trip.

Osprey lists the compatible Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack as a separate 15 L pack measuring 18.1 × 12.2 × 8.3 inches (46 × 31 × 21 cm) and weighing 1.21 lb (0.55 kg). Osprey says it can be used as a personal item while the main pack is stowed overhead. Whether that arrangement qualifies under your ticket depends on the airline’s current personal-item allowance, so verify the size and any weight rules before relying on it. How to make the choice
- Check the carrier first. Look up the current carry-on size and weight rules for the operating airline and route.
- Choose the harness that fits. Compare the Farpoint and Fairview by fit and comfort, not by a presumed universal performance difference.
- Consider Extended Fit if needed. Osprey lists a larger hipbelt and extended straps on that Farpoint version; check its fit details against your measurements.
- Test the packed dimensions. Pack what you intend to take and check whether the loaded bag stays within the carrier’s limit.
- Add a separate daypack only if it works for your allowance. Confirm that the Travel Daypack qualifies as your personal item on the flight.
