December 2024 has passed, so a “best new meme coins to buy” list can only describe what was discussed or measurable then—not recommend a purchase today. The available historical record identifies PNUT and MOODENG with late-2024 animal memes and GOAT with the AI-meme wave. It does not establish that any of them was the best investment, or support a defensible ranking among them.
The useful answer is to treat those names as examples of the market’s themes, then separate dated market activity from evidence about a token’s quality, liquidity, or risk.
Which meme coins were being discussed as new in December 2024?
There was no single market-wide definition of “new.” A token might be called new because it had launched recently, because it had recently attracted attention, or because it belonged to an emerging trend. Those definitions can produce different lists.
PNUT and MOODENG: animal-meme examples
CoinGecko’s 2025 retrospective identifies PNUT and MOODENG as examples of the animal-meme theme in the fourth quarter of 2024. That makes them relevant historical examples, but the report does not rank them as buys or establish that they were newly launched during December.

GOAT: an AI-meme example
CoinGecko describes GOAT as the token that kicked off an AI-meme wave in the fourth quarter of 2024. This is a retrospective account of a market trend, not a finding that GOAT was the best-performing or safest choice for a buyer.

These examples cannot be compared as if they were a ranked shortlist: the retrospective supplies theme context, not a matched set of token-level data from the same dates and measurement windows.
What counted as “new” in a December 2024 listing?
One contemporaneous illustration came from BNB Chain’s competition announced on December 5, 2024. Its eligibility rules used launch-date cutoffs for BSC tokens: one day’s terms covered tokens launched after October 1, while another specified tokens launched after the December 5 announcement. The competition was scheduled to run December 12–19. Those were rules for that event on that chain, not a universal definition of a new meme coin.

The distinction matters when reading archived “new coins” lists. A launch-window list, a list of tokens trending that week, and a list of projects promoted in a presale article answer different questions. Without a stated cutoff, chain, and observation date, “new” is too ambiguous to support a reliable comparison.

What did December’s market activity show—and what did it not show?
CoinGecko’s 2025 retrospective reports that total memecoin market capitalization reached $150.6 billion in December 2024. It also reports average daily memecoin trading volume of $9.7 billion in 2024, compared with $1.1 billion in 2023. These are sector-level figures from CoinGecko’s report, not independently recalculated figures or measures of any one token’s performance.
CoinGecko also reports a peak daily trading volume of $87.4 billion after Robinhood and Coinbase announced WIF and PEPE listings. That figure describes reported activity across the memecoin market around those announcements; it does not show that a particular new coin could be sold at a favorable price, or that the activity would continue.

Large sector totals can explain why meme coins drew attention, but they cannot establish an individual token’s return, sellability, or durable value. A high trading-volume or price-momentum rank is a snapshot, not a substitute for token-specific checks.
How did BNB Chain’s contest rank tokens?
BNB Chain’s December competition assigned weights to three daily measures for eligible BSC tokens. Its ranking was designed to select contest winners, not to evaluate long-term investment quality.

BNB Chain said it would buy 33 BNB worth of the top-ranked token and distribute the tokens to 1,000 BNB and CAKE holders. That prize and scoring system describe a promotion’s mechanics. They are not independent investment standards, and neither the contest metrics nor the prize establish that a winner had lasting value.

How to assess an archived “best” list fairly
Compare tokens using the same date and measurement window. Mixing a token’s launch date from one period with another token’s peak price or later volume can create a misleading ranking.
- Launch date and chain: Establish when the token first traded and on which chain. A contest eligibility window is not a market-wide definition of “new.”
- Volume and market capitalization: Use dated figures and the same source and methodology for every token. These measures describe activity and estimated market size, not whether an order could be sold without substantial price impact.
- Price change: Compare identical intervals. A 24-hour rise is not comparable to a monthly return and can reflect a short-lived spike.
- Liquidity and practical sellability: Check whether meaningful trades can actually be executed. A visible price or high reported volume alone does not establish available liquidity.
- Supply and holder concentration: Verify token supply, allocation, and concentration from primary data before drawing conclusions. These details were not independently checked for the named examples here.
- Utility, partnerships, and roadmaps: Distinguish independently corroborated information from claims made by the project or a promoter. Promotional claims are not proof of adoption or value.
Why should buyers be cautious about hype and presale claims?
Social-media tips and sudden spikes
The CFTC warns against buying new or thinly traded digital coins based on social-media tips or sudden price spikes. It describes pump-and-dump schemes in which organizers use online groups and hype, then may sell before later buyers can exit. This is a general warning about a known scheme; it is not evidence that every meme coin, or any named example above, was manipulated.
Promotional scenarios are not verified outcomes
A December 10, 2024 TechCabal article labeled “Partner” promoted BTFD alongside Shiba Inu and Baby Doge Coin. It showed a hypothetical BTFD investment using a presale price and an expected listing price. Those figures were part of a promotional scenario, not independently verified prices or achieved returns. The article does not make BTFD a validated “best new coin” pick.

What did the SEC say about meme coins?
In a February 27, 2025 staff statement, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance described a class of meme coins and gave the Division’s view that transactions in the types it described do not involve securities offerings under federal securities laws. The statement expressly says it is not a rule, regulation, or Commission-approved guidance; it has no legal force or effect and does not settle the status of a particular coin or transaction. It also does not displace potential enforcement under other laws for fraud.
“The value of meme coins is derived from speculative trading and the collective sentiment of the market, like a collectible.”
This is the SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s wording in its February 27, 2025 staff statement—not a blanket legal determination that every token called a meme coin is outside securities laws.
