There is no single best medical billing and coding certification for every U.S. job. For physician-office and outpatient coding, compare AAPC’s CPC with AHIMA’s CCS-P; for broader or hospital coding work, consider AHIMA’s CCA for early-career candidates and CCS for more experienced coders. If you want billing and revenue-cycle work rather than code assignment, AAPC’s CPB is the closer fit. Certifications can help demonstrate relevant skills, but neither a credential nor the occupation’s salary statistics guarantee a job or a particular income.

Which medical billing and coding certification is best?

Choose by the work you want to do, the setting you want to work in, and the experience you already have. Coding credentials assess code selection and related knowledge; a billing credential focuses on claims and revenue-cycle tasks. A credential’s name alone does not tell you whether it matches a specific employer’s requirements, so compare the exam scope with actual job postings in your area.

Credential Best fit Experience and preparation
AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Outpatient and physician-service coding, including ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT procedure codes, HCPCS Level II codes, modifiers, compliance and payer rules. AAPC identifies medical terminology, anatomy and pathophysiology as useful preparation. AAPC describes qualifying work experience, an 80-hour coding course and/or Practicode as routes related to removing CPC-A apprentice status; check its current policy because the detailed guidance page was last reviewed July 5, 2022. AAPC CPC credential · AAPC CPC certification guidance
AAPC Certified Professional Biller (CPB) Billing and revenue-cycle work, including payer requirements, denials and appeals. AAPC describes this as a billing credential, not a coding credential. Review the AAPC CPB credential scope against the duties you want.
AHIMA Certified Coding Associate (CCA) An early-career coding credential for people interpreting healthcare data and evaluating claims. AHIMA characterizes the CCA as suitable for early-career professionals. See the AHIMA CCA credential for current requirements.
AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) More advanced coding work classifying medical data from records; a potential progression for experienced inpatient or outpatient coders and CCA holders. AHIMA recommends coursework in anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, terminology, reimbursement, and diagnostic and procedural coding. It recommends one year of direct coding experience, or lists other routes including two years of relevant experience and certain credential-plus-experience combinations. These are recommendations and pathways described by AHIMA, not a claim that every candidate must follow one identical route. See the AHIMA CCS credential.
AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist–Physician-based (CCS-P) Physician-based coding in physician offices, group practices, multispecialty clinics and specialty centers. AHIMA describes it as a progression for professionals experienced in outpatient coding and lists recommended experience and coursework routes. See the AHIMA CCS-P credential.

What do medical billing and coding credentials pay?

The most useful official U.S. benchmark here is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) category “medical records specialists,” a broad occupational category that serves as context for coding-related work—not a salary figure for any one certification. BLS reports a median annual wage of $51,140 in May 2025, projects 8% employment growth from 2025 to 2035, and estimates about 14,000 openings per year on average over that decade. Many projected openings are expected to come from workers leaving the occupation. Read the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook entry for medical records specialists for the category’s scope and projections.

AAPC’s 2025 Medical Coding and Billing Salary Report gives a different statistic: an average annual earning of $65,401 among AAPC members responding to its survey, based on 2024 data. It also reports a 13.5% unemployment rate for CPC-A apprentices in that survey. Those are survey findings about specified populations, not a national median or a guaranteed outcome. The AAPC member average and BLS occupational median use different populations and measures, so they are not a controlled comparison or evidence that one certification causes a particular pay increase. See the AAPC 2025 salary report.

AHIMA reports that first-time CCS test takers had an 84% pass rate in 2025, compared with 75% in 2024 and 64% in 2023. These are annual exam statistics, not proof that a particular course or paid preparation product caused candidates to pass. AHIMA’s CCS page provides the credential’s current information.

What will the credential cost beyond the exam?

Costs can include exam fees, membership, preparation materials, required reference books, and the time or expense needed to meet experience and renewal requirements. Prices and policies can change, so confirm them on the credential provider’s official page before paying.

  • CPC: AAPC lists CPC exam vouchers starting at $425 and says current AAPC membership is required before scheduling. AAPC says CPC holders must maintain annual membership and earn 36 continuing education units every two years. Confirm current fees and renewal terms on the AAPC CPC credential page.
  • CCS: AHIMA lists an exam fee of $299 for members and $399 for nonmembers; retakes cost the same. For CCS exams delivered on or after May 1, 2026, AHIMA requires the 2026 code books on its official list. It warns that candidates without the correct books will not be allowed to test and will forfeit the exam fee. Check AHIMA’s exact CCS exam and resource requirements before ordering books or scheduling.

For CCA, CCS-P and CPB, check the relevant credential page for current fees, reference requirements and renewal rules; the figures above are not a complete price list for every certification. Preparation options are available from the credentialing organizations, including AAPC CPC study and exam resources and AHIMA certification preparation. Match any course or study materials to the exact credential and exam version you plan to take.

How to choose based on your career goal

If you are new to coding

Compare the CCA with CPC based on the jobs you are targeting and the type of coding those roles involve. AHIMA positions CCA as an early-career credential; CPC centers on outpatient and physician-service coding. Check local entry-level postings for preferred credentials, code sets and experience expectations before committing to an exam or course.

If you want hospital or broader record-based coding

Review CCS as a more advanced option and assess whether your coursework and experience fit AHIMA’s recommended preparation routes. If you are still building experience, a credential intended for earlier-career candidates may be a more practical starting point, depending on the jobs available to you.

If you want physician-office coding

Compare CPC and CCS-P against the setting and code work in your target roles. Both relate to physician or outpatient coding, but they are credentials from different organizations with distinct exam and maintenance rules. Use the job description—not a general ranking—to decide which scope is closer.

Consider CPB when your intended duties center on payer rules, claim denials and appeals rather than assigning diagnosis and procedure codes. If a job combines billing with coding, determine which tasks dominate and whether the employer asks for one credential, both, or relevant experience.
