The best meal kit for your family depends on how many people you feed, how much cooking you want to do, and whether the menu fits your household’s tastes and dietary needs. Home Chef offers a separate four-serving Family Plan with several low-prep formats; EveryPlate lets customers choose plans for two, four or six people. Blue Apron’s menu search listing has shown a family-style bundle for six, but check its live menu for current details. Compare the full checkout price—including shipping and any recipe or protein charges—before choosing.

How to choose a meal kit for your family

Start with how the service portions meals, then assess the work involved and whether the recipes suit your household. A plan sized for four people may still be a poor fit if it forces you to order more meals than you need or offers few dishes your children will eat.

  • Serving size: Check the available household sizes and whether meals are sold in two- or four-serving increments.
  • Weekly choice: Look at the current menu, not just the number of recipes advertised generally. Counts can change by week and may refer to different menus.
  • Cooking effort: Distinguish a conventional kit with prep and cooking from oven-ready or heat-and-eat formats.
  • Dietary fit: Read recipe ingredients and allergen disclosures. A menu tag is not a guarantee that a meal is safe for an allergy or medical restriction.
  • All-in cost: Include shipping, premium recipes, protein upgrades and the number of servings and meals you will actually order.
  • Flexibility and coverage: Confirm delivery to your ZIP code and review the current skip, pause and cancellation terms.

These are subscription services, not independent taste-tested rankings. The descriptions below reflect what the providers state on their official pages; they do not establish that a service is healthier, tastier or faster in a measured comparison.

Family meal kits compared

Service Household size and menu Convenience Important limits
Home Chef Separate Family Plan meals are sold in four-serving increments. Standard-menu meals generally start at two servings. The Family Menu page advertises 18+ weekly options; its support page describes at least 10 meals weekly, so treat either count as page-specific and subject to change. Classic kits, Express meals advertised as under 30 minutes, Oven-Ready meals, Chopped & Ready meals with pre-chopped ingredients, and Heat & Eat single-serve microwaveable add-ons. Family and standard menus are separate, and an account can order from only one menu per week. Current cost depends on plan and quantity. The provider’s pages conflict on whether Family Plan proteins can be customized; verify in the live ordering flow.
EveryPlate Plans for two, four or six people, with three to five meals per week and weekly recipe selection. The provider describes recipes as six steps and around 30 minutes, and says customers can pause or cancel. The company says it does not cater to restrictive diets. Shipping applies, delivery is limited to most of the continental U.S. and ZIP-code confirmation is needed. Common allergens are handled in its facilities.
Blue Apron An official menu search result lists a family-style bundle for six. The weekly menu page lists meal kits and other formats. Current bundle details, servings, price, delivery coverage and subscription mechanics are not sufficiently established by the accessible menu details. Check the live menu before deciding.

What each service may suit

Home Chef: useful when you want a four-serving family menu and format choices

Home Chef separates its Family Plan from its standard menu. The Family Plan uses four-serving increments, while standard meals generally start at two servings, so check which menu you are selecting before building an order. The company’s family page describes several formats: classic kits, Express meals advertised as under 30 minutes, oven-safe-tin Oven-Ready meals, pre-chopped Chopped & Ready meals, and Heat & Eat microwaveable add-ons. These are provider descriptions, not independent cooking-time measurements. See the Home Chef Family Menu and its meal-plan information.

Home Chef’s two pages differ on Family Plan protein customization: the support article says some customization is available, while a separate comparison description says proteins are not customizable. Because the statements conflict, confirm the options for the specific recipe in the current ordering flow rather than relying on a general claim. The Family Plan is a separate menu, and switching menus can discard saved future selections. Review recipes individually; Home Chef notes that recommendations may not perfectly match dietary preferences.

EveryPlate: a clear size range, but not a restrictive-diet service

EveryPlate’s official page offers plans for two, four or six people and three to five meals per week. It says most meals take around 30 minutes and use six-step instructions. Delivery is stated to cover most of the continental U.S., but availability should be checked with the household ZIP code. The company also describes pause and cancellation flexibility; review its current account terms for the rules that apply to your subscription. Details are on the EveryPlate service page.

EveryPlate says it does not cater to restrictive diets, though it offers vegetarian recipes and tags such as Protein Smart, Calorie Smart and Carb Smart. Those labels do not establish suitability for a medical diet. The company provides ingredient lists and allergen information, and says meals are prepared in facilities that handle common allergens; households managing severe allergies should read the current disclosures and contact the provider as needed.

Blue Apron: verify the family bundle before treating it as an option

Blue Apron’s official menu search result lists a family-style bundle for six, but the accessible weekly menu page did not provide enough detail to verify its current availability, price, servings, delivery area or subscription mechanics. Treat the listing as a lead to check on the live menu, not as a settled offer.

How to compare the real weekly cost

Use the amount shown at checkout for the exact plan and delivery address you are considering. A per-serving headline does not necessarily represent the recurring total: meal count, household size, shipping and any premium recipe or protein charges can change the bill. Promotions may also have conditions, so do not treat an introductory offer as the regular price.

EveryPlate’s current official page states a starting price of $5.99 per serving and flat shipping of $10.99 per box. These are provider-stated prices that can change; promotions and the final order total depend on plan and order conditions. Check the live checkout total before comparing it with another service. Home Chef’s current cost depends on plan and quantity, and the available information here does not establish a directly comparable total for Blue Apron.

Are meal kits worth it for families?

A kit can be worth considering when its recipes and serving increments line up with meals your household will eat, and when the amount you pay for ingredients, delivery and convenience fits your budget. It may be less useful if the menu does not accommodate your dietary needs, the serving format creates unwanted leftovers, or the final recurring total is more than you want to spend. Compare the cost and effort of the meals you would actually order—not a promotion or a provider’s general claims about satisfaction.

Before subscribing, select a representative week of meals, check the ingredients against your family’s preferences and requirements, enter your ZIP code, and review the full charge and subscription terms. If the menu changes each week, repeat that check before placing future orders.
