What jobs can you get with a business degree? Business graduates work in management, finance, accounting, sales, human resources, marketing, operations and other fields—but a degree does not guarantee a particular job, and some roles require substantial experience. The best fit depends on the work you want to do, the qualifications employers expect and the opportunities in your area.

Where do people with business degrees work?

In 2023, about 13.7 million employed people in the United States had a business degree, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), using U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey data. Their jobs were spread across several occupational groups:

Occupational group Share of employed business-degree holders in 2023
Management 25%
Business and financial operations 23%
Sales and related 12%
Office and administrative support 9%
Computer and mathematical 6%
Other occupations 25%

The same BLS page reports a $75,000 median annual wage for employed business-degree holders in 2023. That figure describes a broad population, not an entry-level salary or a forecast for any one graduate. The page also lists common occupations held by business-degree holders, including accountants and auditors, financial managers, management analysts, human resources specialists, sales representatives and general and operations managers. Those examples show where degree holders work; they do not mean every role is an immediate or typical first job.

See the BLS field-of-degree page for business for its underlying occupation and wage data.

What are the best jobs for business majors?

“Best” depends on whether you prefer working with numbers, people, customers or operating systems—and on your experience and credentials. The paths below are grounded in BLS occupational data. The growth figures are national projections for occupations from 2024 to 2034, not projections limited to business graduates.

Accounting and finance

Accountants and auditors prepare and examine financial records, evaluate reporting and help organizations meet tax and regulatory requirements. This path can suit graduates who like detail-oriented work, accounting principles and explaining financial information. BLS projects 5% occupational growth from 2024 to 2034 and 124,200 average annual openings over that period in occupations typically requiring a bachelor’s degree. Openings include replacement needs as well as growth; they are not all new or entry-level vacancies.

Financial managers oversee an organization’s financial health, such as planning, reporting and investment or cash-management activities. This is a distinct, more senior role rather than a synonym for entry-level finance work. BLS projects 15% growth from 2024 to 2034 on its business-degree page. A separate BLS Career Outlook article used the earlier 2023–33 projection cycle and reported 17% growth and 75,100 average annual openings for financial managers. Keep those projection windows separate; they are not conflicting estimates for the same period.

Analysis and consulting

Management analysts study an organization’s processes and performance, then recommend changes to improve efficiency or reduce costs. The work typically centers on research, data and communicating recommendations to clients or leaders. BLS projects 9% growth from 2024 to 2034 and 98,100 average annual openings in that period for the occupation. Its bachelor’s-level openings analysis lists less than five years of typical related work experience, so a business degree may be a foundation rather than the only qualification.

See the BLS management analyst profile for more on the work and qualifications.

Human resources

Human resources specialists may recruit candidates, support hiring and onboarding, maintain personnel records or help administer employee programs. The mix depends on the employer and specialization. BLS projects 6% growth from 2024 to 2034 and 81,800 average annual openings over that period. Consider this path if you enjoy organized, people-focused work and can handle confidential information and workplace policies.

Marketing and market research

Market research analysts and marketing specialists examine customer preferences, market conditions and campaign performance to help organizations make decisions. The BLS bachelor’s-level openings chart combines these titles and projects 87,200 average annual openings from 2024 to 2034. That combined figure should not be read as an estimate for every marketing job or specialty. This path may fit graduates who like blending analysis, communication and an understanding of customers.

Operations and general management

General and operations managers coordinate an organization’s activities, which can include staffing, budgets, policies and day-to-day processes. BLS projects 4% occupational growth from 2024 to 2034 and 308,700 average annual openings in its chart of occupations typically requiring a bachelor’s degree. The same chart lists five years or more of typical related work experience. Treat this as a longer-term career direction: the large opening count does not make it a typical first job after graduation.

Business graduates may also work in related operations roles. BLS projects 108,200 average annual openings from 2024 to 2034 for “business operations specialists, all other,” a broad occupational category rather than a single defined job title.

Sales and customer service

Sales and related occupations accounted for 12% of employed business-degree holders in 2023. BLS’s list of commonly held occupations includes wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, retail sales supervisors and customer service representatives. The degree is not necessarily required for these jobs: BLS separately reports that some of the listed occupations have typical entry education below the bachelor’s level. Sales may suit graduates who enjoy customer relationships, persuasion and measurable goals; customer service emphasizes resolving questions and problems.

How should you compare pay and job outlook?

Use wage and projection figures as context, not personal guarantees. The $75,000 figure above is the 2023 median for employed business-degree holders across occupations. It is not interchangeable with an occupation’s median wage, an entry salary or a current offer. The BLS sources cited here provide different measures and years, so check the date and population attached to each figure before comparing them.

  • Growth rate estimates how much employment in an occupation is projected to change over a period. For example, BLS projects 15% growth for financial managers and 5% for accountants and auditors from 2024 to 2034.
  • Average annual openings include openings created by workers leaving an occupation or the labor force, as well as those associated with employment growth. They are not a count of new jobs alone, nor a promise of vacancies available to recent graduates.
  • Projection cycles differ. The BLS Career Outlook article reports selected 2023–33 projections; the business field-of-degree page and bachelor’s-level openings article use 2024–34 projections. Do not combine percentages from the two periods as if they were one forecast.
  • Geography matters. These figures describe the U.S. nationally. Local hiring, wages and competition can differ by region and industry.

BLS’s broader 2024–34 projections estimate that U.S. business and financial operations occupations will grow from 11.262 million jobs in 2024 to 11.849 million in 2034, a 5.2% increase. This is an occupational-group forecast, not a business-degree-specific estimate.

How to choose a business career path

  1. Start with the work you want to do. If you like financial records and rules, investigate accounting. If you prefer interpreting information and recommending changes, look at analysis. For people-centered work, consider human resources or sales; for coordinating processes, explore operations.
  2. Check the actual entry requirements. A business degree can be relevant without being sufficient. Review occupation profiles and job postings for required education, experience, software or technical skills, and any credentials employers request. Pay particular attention to experience expectations for management roles.
  3. Match your concentration and evidence of skills to the role. Coursework, internships, projects and prior jobs can help show practical ability. For example, a finance concentration is more directly aligned with financial analysis than a general interest in business, while research projects can help demonstrate analytical and communication skills for market research.
  4. Compare local opportunities and compensation. National statistics are useful for orientation, but search current postings in the places and industries where you might work. Compare job duties, experience requirements and the wage measure and year behind any salary figure.
  5. Think in steps, not just titles. Some attractive outcomes—especially senior management—are more plausible after building related experience. Identify a realistic starting role that develops the skills and responsibility needed for the longer-term job.

The BLS occupation profiles linked above provide duties and typical entry education; the agency’s 2024–34 bachelor’s-level openings table offers additional context on openings, wage year and experience expectations.
