For a switcher with an eligible trade-in, AT&T and Verizon have the strongest iPhone 17 Pro offers, while T-Mobile is the most interesting no-trade-in option for some new customers. For an unlocked phone, Best Buy’s $529.99 iPhone 16e and $899.99 iPhone Air were the best major-retailer markdowns found. Apple’s least expensive current-generation iPhone is the unlocked iPhone 17e at $599.
The right deal depends on whether you are switching, upgrading an existing line, adding a family line, trading in a phone, and willing to stay with the carrier for 24 or 36 months. This guide separates those conditions so you can compare the real commitment rather than the headline price.
Quick verdict: the best iPhone deal for each type of buyer
| Buyer situation | Best current lead | Why it stands out | What you must accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switching to AT&T with a qualifying trade-in | iPhone 17 Pro from $0 per month or 17 Pro Max from about $2.78 per month | Up to $1,100 in bill credits on Pro models | Qualifying unlimited plan, eligible trade-in, new-line or switcher eligibility, and 36 months of credits. AT&T says the Pro trade-in must be worth at least $290. |
| Switching to T-Mobile | iPhone 17 or iPhone 17 Pro on us for some new customers | Some Experience plans offer a no-trade-in version | Usually 24 monthly credits, qualifying plan, credit approval, and a number port-in or new line. A more expensive plan can erase the device savings. |
| Switching to Verizon with a trade-in | iPhone 17 Pro on us or Pro Max on us | Up to $1,100 in combined value, including a $270 Verizon gift card on the referenced Pro offers | New line, Unlimited Ultimate, eligible trade-in, and 36 months of credits. The $1,100 headline is not all monthly device credits. |
| Existing T-Mobile customer | Check Experience Beyond and other account-specific iPhone 17, Air, Pro, and selected iPhone 16 offers | Some existing-customer offers include eligible or any-condition trade-ins | Eligibility depends on the account and plan. Do not assume a switcher promotion applies to an upgrade. |
| Existing Verizon customer | Check iPhone 17 Pro on Unlimited Ultimate and current 17e or 16-series upgrade offers | Verizon’s Apple listing shows up to $830 in trade-in savings on several models | Exact savings depend on line, plan, trade-in, and account targeting. |
| Existing AT&T customer who wants to stay | Compare AT&T’s upgrade offer with Apple Trade In and unlocked retail pricing | AT&T’s best headlines may be limited to new lines or particular unlimited plans | Product pages distinguish new-line, upgrade, online-only, and trade-in offers. Verify the offer in your logged-in cart. |
| Buyer who wants flexibility | Buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple or Best Buy | No carrier bill credits, plan requirement, or remaining carrier installment balance | Higher upfront cost, although the phone can be paired with a less expensive service plan. |
| Cheapest current-generation iPhone without a carrier promotion | iPhone 17e for $599 | Lowest Apple starting price and 256GB base storage | It has fewer premium features, including a single rear camera, than the iPhone 17 and Pro models. |
Bottom line: A phone that is free after credits is probably the best deal only when you would keep the required plan for the entire credit period. Otherwise, an unlocked phone can cost less after accounting for the plan premium, taxes, connection fees, and the cost of losing future credits.

Current U.S. iPhone lineup and Apple prices
Apple’s current U.S. lineup has seven models. The starting prices below are useful reference points, but they are not always apples-to-apples: the iPhone 16 starts at 128GB, while the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e start at 256GB. Apple’s shop lists the Pro family from $1,099, while current carrier listings show the iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,199.99.
| Model | Starting price | Base storage shown | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | $599 | 256GB | Lowest-priced new current-generation iPhone |
| iPhone 16 | $699 | 128GB | Older mainstream model, especially if heavily discounted |
| iPhone 16 Plus | $799 | 128GB | Large screen at a lower price than the Pro Max |
| iPhone 17 | $799 | 256GB | Best mainstream storage-adjusted value |
| iPhone Air | $999 | 256GB | Thin, light premium design |
| iPhone 17 Pro | From $1,099 | 256GB | Pro camera and performance features |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | $1,199.99 on the referenced carrier listing | 256GB | Largest display and battery tier |
See Apple’s current iPhone shop, the iPhone 16 page, and the iPhone 17 page for current configurations. The iPhone 17’s $799 starting price includes twice the storage of the $699 iPhone 16, so a $100 lower sticker price does not automatically make the 16 the better value.
Best deal by iPhone model
iPhone 17e: cheapest new iPhone
The iPhone 17e is the straightforward choice if your priority is the lowest price for a new, current-generation iPhone. Apple lists it at $599 with 256GB of storage. It is less expensive than the iPhone 17, but it gives up some premium features, including the more advanced camera setup found on the standard and Pro models.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Apple: $599 unlocked from Apple’s product page.
- AT&T: A referenced product page showed about $0.43 per month after $200 in online credits, with no trade-in required for the displayed new-line offer. It still requires an online order, eligible unlimited service, a new line, and 36 months of credits.
- T-Mobile: Current listings include a Get 4 On Us offer with qualifying lines and trade-ins. Another offer covers an individual phone for qualifying 55+, military, or first-responder customers on eligible Experience plans. These are not universal no-strings discounts.
- Verizon: Verizon’s Apple listing displayed $0 per month and Save $600, but the exact plan, line, and customer requirements must be opened in the live offer.
Buy it if: you want a reasonably priced new iPhone and do not need the best camera system. Skip it if: a carrier promotion brings the iPhone 17 close to the same total cost, since the 17 starts at $799 with 256GB and offers a more complete feature set.
iPhone 16: worthwhile only at a meaningful discount
The iPhone 16 starts at $699, but its base configuration has 128GB. That makes it a sensible purchase when a retailer or carrier discounts it substantially, not necessarily when it is only slightly cheaper than the 256GB iPhone 17.
- T-Mobile: Current deal pages show one iPhone 16 on us with a new line and eligible trade-in on most plans.
- Verizon: A family promotion advertises four iPhone 16 devices on us with four lines at $25 per line per month on Unlimited Welcome with Auto Pay. This is a four-line offer, not a general single-line price.
- AT&T: Check the live cart. The retrieved pages did not establish a universal free-phone offer for every iPhone 16 configuration.
- Unlocked: Compare the 128GB price with the iPhone 17’s 256GB storage before buying.
Best for: buyers who find a genuinely large markdown or families eligible for Verizon’s four-line promotion. Not ideal for: someone paying close to $699, because the iPhone 17 offers twice the base storage for $100 more.
iPhone 16 Plus: the large-screen value candidate
The iPhone 16 Plus starts at $799 with 128GB. It can be a good large-screen value if a carrier promotion or retailer clearance sale makes it substantially cheaper than the iPhone 17 or Pro Max.
- T-Mobile: The current Apple-deals page shows an iPhone 16 Plus on us with any-condition trade-in on Experience Beyond.
- AT&T: A retrieved page showed the $829.99 retail price and a $200 online new-line promotion, but that should not be described as a device-only $200 discount. Confirm the complete installment and credit terms.
- Verizon: The model is listed among Verizon’s current iPhones, but no universal single-line free-phone offer was exposed in the retrieved material.
Buy it if: you value a large display and find it discounted. Compare carefully if: the iPhone 17 is available at the same price, because the 17 includes 256GB.
iPhone 17: the strongest mainstream value
The standard iPhone 17 is the model to compare first for most buyers. Its $799 Apple starting price matches the iPhone 16 Plus while doubling base storage to 256GB. Carrier promotions can also make it nearly free.
- AT&T: Product pages have shown $0 per month with a qualifying trade-in, but retrieved page variants displayed different maximum credits—up to $700 on one version and up to $830 on another. Treat the amount as dynamic and verify the logged-in checkout.
- T-Mobile: Some switchers bringing a number to Experience More, Experience Beyond, or qualifying Better Value configurations can receive the iPhone 17 on us without a trade-in. Credits generally run for 24 months.
- Verizon: Current pages show on-us offers with a new line on select Unlimited plans, as well as trade-in-based savings. Separate switcher and existing-customer eligibility before comparing.
- Walmart: The postpaid Wireless Savings Event displayed a $300 e-gift card on select iPhone 17 devices. It also showed T-Mobile financing at approximately $8 per month for 24 months in the retrieved listing. Confirm whether the gift card and financing offer can be combined.
- Apple: Apple’s carrier-offer page may show carrier credits after trade-in, but that is a carrier-financing transaction rather than the same as buying an unlocked iPhone outright.
Best for: most buyers who want a current mainstream iPhone. It is also the best target for comparing a carrier’s no-trade-in offer against an unlocked purchase.
iPhone Air: the thin, light option
The iPhone Air starts at $999 with 256GB. Its appeal is the thin, lightweight design rather than the lowest absolute price. Carrier promotions are currently more compelling than Apple’s full-price option for buyers willing to accept a new line or trade-in.
- Best Buy unlocked: The referenced unlocked listing showed a 256GB iPhone Air at $899.99, $100 below the displayed comparable value. Confirm that the listing is sold by Best Buy and fully unlocked.
- AT&T: Product pages showed new-line pricing as low as $4.43 per month for 256GB and $14.43 per month for 1TB in selected configurations. Online, new-line, plan, and 36-month credit conditions apply.
- T-Mobile: Current listings show an on-us offer with an any-condition trade-in on Experience Beyond. Verify whether the displayed offer is for a new line or an upgrade.
- Verizon: Verizon lists up to $830 in trade-in savings; another product page displayed a no-trade-in $0-per-month configuration on Unlimited Ultimate. Treat that as page-specific until confirmed in checkout.
Buy it if: thinness and weight matter more than the Pro camera system. Skip it if: the standard iPhone 17 meets your needs or the Pro is similarly priced after credits.
iPhone 17 Pro: the best camera and performance deal
The iPhone 17 Pro is the strongest promotional target for a switcher with a valuable trade-in. Its Apple starting price is $1,099, but carrier credits can cover most or all of the device payment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- AT&T: As low as $0 per month after up to $1,100 in credits over 36 months. The referenced offer requires a qualifying unlimited plan and a trade-in worth at least $290. Taxes are due on the full retail price at purchase.
- T-Mobile: Some switchers on Experience More or Experience Beyond can receive the Pro on us without a trade-in. Experience Beyond can also provide up to $1,100 with an eligible any-condition trade-in. These are separate offer paths.
- Verizon: A switcher with a qualifying trade-in and a new line on Unlimited Ultimate can receive the Pro on us after credits. The referenced page also showed a $270 Verizon e-gift card, making the advertised combined value up to $1,100. The gift card does not necessarily reduce the financed device balance immediately.
- Apple and Best Buy: Apple offers full-price unlocked purchases and carrier financing. Best Buy’s activation banners advertised up to $1,100 on selected Pro models, but those banners may require AT&T or Verizon service and a trade-in; they should not be confused with an ordinary unlocked markdown.
Best for: buyers who want the Pro camera and expect to stay with the carrier for all 36 months. For a buyer who changes carriers every two years, an unlocked purchase may be more practical even if its sticker price is higher.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: the largest display and battery
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the premium option, with a current carrier-listed retail price of $1,199.99. Its full 36-month device payment is approximately $33.33 per month before credits.

- Verizon: Up to $1,100 off for a switcher with an eligible trade-in, new line, and Unlimited Ultimate, plus a displayed $270 e-gift card on the referenced product page. The amount combines different incentives.
- T-Mobile: T-Mobile’s promotion-detail page includes the Pro Max in its iPhone special-deal family, but the retrieved material did not independently expose a model-specific current price. Do not assume the Pro or standard iPhone 17 offer applies to the Pro Max.
- Apple: Buy it unlocked at the current Apple price or use Apple Card Monthly Installments if you qualify.
Buy it if: battery life and the biggest display are worth the premium. Consider the 17 Pro instead if: the carrier offers the Pro at $0 while charging extra for the Max.
Carrier deal map: what each offer really requires
AT&T
AT&T’s headline offers are generally 36-month installment agreements paired with monthly bill credits. The device is not immediately free: AT&T finances the retail price and then applies credits to the monthly bill. The credits can vary by trade-in model, condition, plan, customer type, and promotion.

|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro | As low as $0 per month; up to $1,100 in credits | Trade-in worth at least $290, qualifying unlimited plan, 0% for 36 months, and full-price taxes due at sale |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | About $2.78 per month | Eligible trade-in, qualifying unlimited plan, and 36 months of credits |
| iPhone 17 | Pages have shown $0 per month and different maximum credits, including $700 and $830 | Dynamic, plan-specific, and likely dependent on customer state; verify in cart |
| iPhone 17e | About $0.43 per month after $200 online credits | New line, online order, eligible unlimited plan, and 36 months; no trade-in on the displayed path |
| iPhone Air | From $4.43 per month for selected 256GB configurations | New-line and online credits; storage and customer type affect price |
AT&T’s pages were not fully consistent during the research check. That can result from changing promotions, page personalization, customer login status, storage selection, or plan selection. Treat every AT&T monthly figure as a price shown on a particular product page, not a permanent nationwide promise.
AT&T also advertises an optional Next Up Anytime add-on for $10 per month. It allows an upgrade after the first payment, subject to restrictions, and permits a maximum of three upgrades in a 12-month period. Add the full cost of the add-on to your comparison; it is not free early-upgrade insurance.
For unlocking, AT&T says the device must generally be more than 60 days from purchase, have a zero installment balance, not be reported lost or stolen, and be associated with a current account. Read the AT&T unlock requirements before assuming a financed phone can be taken to another carrier.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s strongest current angle is the combination of no-trade-in switcher offers and 24-month credits. The catch is that an Experience plan may cost more than a lower-priced plan or a bring-your-own-device alternative.

T-Mobile says customers pay tax on the pre-credit price and a $35 device connection charge. Its equipment installment plans are interest-free, but down payments can vary with the device and credit qualification. The company’s terms also warn that canceling before all credits are received can stop future credits and leave the remaining finance balance due. Paying off early can also end promotional credits.
The displayed price of Experience Beyond depends on line count and discount category. For example, the referenced 55+ page showed a single-line price of $90 per month, while standard pricing, taxes, fees, Auto Pay, and other discounts can differ. Check the current T-Mobile plan page rather than treating $90 as a universal price.
T-Mobile says eligible devices are automatically unlocked within two business days when the device supports remote unlocking. After purchase, check an iPhone at Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock.
Verizon
Verizon’s best Pro deals are aimed at switchers who trade in a phone and choose Unlimited Ultimate. The current pages combine monthly bill credits with gift-card incentives, so the headline value must be separated into its components.
| Offer lead | Advertised result | Key conditions |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro | On us for a switcher; up to $1,100 combined value plus a displayed $270 gift card | New line, Unlimited Ultimate, qualifying trade-in, and 36 months of credits |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | Up to $1,100 off plus a displayed $270 gift card | Switcher, eligible trade-in, new line, Unlimited Ultimate, and 36-month financing |
| iPhone 17 | On-us offers with new lines on select Unlimited plans, plus trade-in savings | Separate new-customer, existing-customer, and family eligibility |
| iPhone Air | Up to $830 in trade-in savings; one page also showed $0 per month without a trade-in | Plan-specific and page-specific; verify live eligibility |
| iPhone 17e | $0 per month and Save $600 shown on Verizon’s Apple listing | Open the offer details for the required line and plan |
| iPhone 16 | Four devices on us with four lines at $25 per line per month | Unlimited Welcome, Auto Pay, and four-line family structure |
Verizon’s plan page lists Unlimited Ultimate at $100 per month for one line and $65 per line for four lines before the displayed Auto Pay discount, with taxes and fees extra. Prices and promotional plan treatment can change. The four-line iPhone 16 promotion is potentially excellent for a family that already needs four lines, but it is a poor comparison for a single-line buyer.
Verizon’s current postpaid locking policy changed on January 27, 2026. Devices bought under the current policy are generally locked until paid in full, subject to Verizon’s exceptions and security procedures. Devices activated before that date followed the former 60-day policy. Current Verizon prepaid devices can remain locked for up to 365 days from purchase or 12 months of paid service. Do not use the old generic statement that every Verizon phone unlocks after 60 days.

Apple, Best Buy, and Walmart: unlocked and retail alternatives
Apple
Apple sells iPhones outright, through Apple Card Monthly Installments, through Apple Trade In, and with carrier financing. An iPhone purchased outright or financed directly by Apple is unlocked. Apple Card Monthly Installments are advertised at 0% APR over 24 months, with 3% Daily Cash for eligible Apple Card purchases. The Apple Trade In value is immediate or applied through Apple’s purchase process, but it may be lower than the headline carrier credit.
Apple’s shop page advertises up to $800–$1,100 in carrier credit after trade-in, while Apple’s direct trade-in promotion for the iPhone 17, Air, and 17 Pro advertises $195–$695 for an iPhone 13 or newer. These are separate programs. Do not add them together unless Apple’s checkout explicitly shows that they combine.

Best Buy
The strongest ordinary unlocked markdowns found in major retail coverage were:
- iPhone 16e 128GB unlocked: $529.99, shown as $70 off.
- iPhone Air 256GB unlocked: $899.99, shown as $100 off.
Stock, seller, location, and promotion eligibility can change. On Best Buy, verify the listing says unlocked and is sold by Best Buy rather than assuming every iPhone result is an unlocked retail sale.
Best Buy also displayed activation banners advertising up to $1,100 on selected iPhone 17 Pro models and up to $830 on selected iPhone 17 models. Those are service-activation promotions that may require Verizon or AT&T, a trade-in, a new line, or other conditions. They are not equivalent to the unlocked markdowns above.

Walmart’s postpaid Wireless Savings Event displayed a $300 e-gift card on select iPhone 17 devices. The retrieved listing also showed T-Mobile iPhone 17 financing at approximately $8 per month for 24 months and included AT&T and Verizon iPhone 17-series devices on carrier installment plans.
Walmart also sells Straight Talk and Total Wireless iPhones through its prepaid listings. Those are carrier-locked prepaid devices, not unlocked bargains. Read the carrier name and lock terms before purchasing. A low upfront prepaid price can be unsuitable if you need to move the phone to another network.
What free after credits actually means
When a carrier says an iPhone is on us or $0 per month, the usual sequence is:
- You sign an installment agreement for the phone’s full retail price.
- You pay taxes on the full price and possibly an activation or device-connection charge.
- The carrier applies a promotional credit to each monthly bill.
- You must keep the qualifying line active and on the eligible plan.
- If you leave, downgrade, cancel the line, or otherwise lose eligibility, future credits usually stop.
- The remaining unpaid device balance may become due, and the phone may remain locked until it is paid off or otherwise qualifies for unlocking.
A gift card is different from a bill credit. A $270 gift card may arrive after activation or another qualification period; it does not necessarily reduce the installment balance or your monthly bill. Treat it as a separate rebate and account for its timing, expiration, and spending restrictions.

T-Mobile commonly uses 24 months. Apple Card installments are normally 24 months. A 36-month phone can look cheaper per month while creating a longer obligation, particularly for someone who upgrades after two years.
New line, upgrade, switcher, and family eligibility
These labels are not interchangeable:
| Offer type | What it usually means | Who should compare it |
|---|---|---|
| New customer or switcher | You port a number from another carrier, often open a new line, and meet credit and plan rules | Someone genuinely moving service; not automatically available to an existing customer |
| New line | You add a line, which may be possible even if you already use that carrier | Families adding service or customers willing to pay for an additional line |
| Existing-customer upgrade | You replace a phone on an existing line | Current customers who want to preserve their account structure |
| Trade-in offer | You return a qualifying device, usually by a deadline, in exchange for bill credits or a rebate | Customers with a paid-off or otherwise eligible phone |
| No-trade-in offer | No old phone is required, but a new line, port-in, qualifying plan, or credit approval may still be required | Switchers without a valuable device |
| Multi-line offer | The advertised device price depends on several qualifying lines | Families that need the advertised number of lines |
| Affinity offer | Eligibility is limited to groups such as 55+, military members, or first responders | Customers who can document the qualifying status |
Before choosing an offer, ask the carrier to show the exact monthly plan price, device payment, promotional credit, taxes, connection fees, trade-in credit, and any Auto Pay requirement in one checkout summary. A new-line offer is not a valid substitute for an upgrade offer if you do not want another line.
Trade-in conditions that change the price
Trade-in language is one of the most important parts of the deal. Check all of the following:
Rank #4
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
- Is your exact model on the eligible-device list?
- Is there a minimum trade-in value? AT&T’s referenced iPhone 17 Pro offer says at least $290.
- Does the offer require good condition, or does it say any condition?
- Are cracked screens, water damage, missing components, or non-working phones accepted?
- Must the old phone be paid off before it can qualify?
- Is the value delivered instantly, as monthly bill credits, as a rebate, or as a gift card?
- How soon must the phone be shipped or returned?
- Does the carrier use the initial estimate or a later inspection?
T-Mobile’s current pages use any-condition language for some offers, and Verizon’s Pro switcher pages also show any-condition language. That does not mean every damaged or financed phone automatically qualifies: the detailed terms can still require ownership, activation, a particular model, or a return deadline. Apple Trade In is usually more flexible and immediate, but its quoted value may be lower than a carrier’s maximum promotional credit.
How to calculate the true cost
Use the same time period for the phone and the service plan. The core calculation is:
Real deal cost = device payments after credits + required plan-cost difference + taxes and fees + activation or connection charges − trade-in value − guaranteed gift cards or rebates.
Example: a 36-month carrier promotion
Suppose a $1,199.99 iPhone 17 Pro Max has a regular device payment of about $33.33 for 36 months and $1,100 in promotional credits. The remaining device cost is approximately $2.78 per month, or about $100 over 36 months:
36 × $33.33 = about $1,199.88 in device payments
36 × $30.55 = about $1,099.80 in credits
Remaining device cost = about $100.08
That does not mean the phone costs only $100. Add taxes on the full retail price, any activation fee, the required plan’s cost above the plan you would otherwise choose, and subtract only a gift card you are certain to receive. If leaving after 24 months causes the final 12 credits to disappear, the comparison changes dramatically.
Example: a 24-month T-Mobile promotion
A $799 iPhone 17 financed over 24 months has a pre-credit device payment of about $33.29 per month. If the promotion supplies matching credits, the device payment may be $0:
24 × $33.29 = about $799 in device payments
24 × $33.29 = about $799 in promotional credits
Device balance after credits = $0
You still owe tax on the pre-credit price and T-Mobile’s stated $35 device connection charge. More importantly, compare the qualifying Experience plan with the cheapest service plan you would otherwise use:
(Required plan price − alternative plan price) × 24 months
+ taxes and connection charge
+ any lost trade-in value
= the plan-related cost of the “free” phone
For a single line, even a $20 monthly plan premium adds $480 over 24 months. That is why a free phone on a premium plan can cost more than an unlocked phone paired with inexpensive service.
Example: an unlocked purchase
For an unlocked iPhone, use:
Upfront phone price
− retailer discount or Apple Trade In
+ service plan cost over the same period
= total ownership cost
An unlocked iPhone 16e at Best Buy’s displayed $529.99 price, for example, does not require a carrier credit period. It may still be more expensive than a carrier phone on day one, but it remains usable if you change carriers, cancel service, or sell it.
Family promotions: when four free phones are actually a good deal
Family deals can be excellent if you already need the required number of lines. They can be expensive if you add lines solely to obtain phones.
- Verizon: The referenced promotion offers four iPhone 16 devices on us with four lines at $25 per line per month on Unlimited Welcome and Auto Pay. Compare the cost of four lines against the family’s existing service, not against a single-line price.
- T-Mobile: Current pages show Get 4 On Us or four iPhone 17e offers with qualifying lines and trade-ins. The number of lines, plan, trade-in, and credit period are material.
For a family already paying for four lines, calculate the total account bill with and without the promotion over 24 or 36 months. For a single buyer, ignore a four-line headline unless you genuinely need three additional lines.
What if you still owe money on your current iPhone?
Do not assume a switcher incentive instantly erases an existing device balance. AT&T advertises up to $800 per line to help break a contract, while T-Mobile and Verizon advertise separate switcher or keep-and-switch incentives. These are separate promotions and may not combine with every iPhone offer.

Before switching, get written answers to these questions:
- Must you continue paying the old carrier until reimbursement arrives?
- Is the payoff assistance an immediate credit, a prepaid card, or a delayed reimbursement?
- Must you trade in the old phone?
- Does the new carrier require a new line and number port-in?
- Will the payoff promotion and iPhone promotion appear on the same account?
- What happens if the reimbursement is denied after the old phone is shipped?
If you trade in a financed phone, confirm that the old carrier’s balance is handled separately. A carrier’s promotional credits generally remain tied to the original account and do not transfer with the handset.
Unlocking, selling, and moving the phone later
| Purchase route | Typical lock situation | Flexibility |
|---|---|---|
| Apple outright | Unlocked | Highest; usable with a compatible carrier |
| Apple Card or Apple financing | Unlocked when financed directly by Apple | High, subject to the financing agreement |
| Carrier financing through Apple | Can remain carrier-locked until paid in full | Depends on the carrier’s policy |
| AT&T installment plan | Unlock generally requires more than 60 days, zero balance, a current account, and no lost-or-stolen report | Limited until paid off and unlocked |
| T-Mobile installment plan | Eligible devices are automatically unlocked within two business days when remote unlocking is supported | Check Carrier Lock after eligibility |
| Verizon postpaid purchased under the current policy | Generally locked until paid in full, subject to exceptions and security procedures | Limited until paid off |
| Verizon prepaid under the current policy | May remain locked for 365 days from purchase or 12 months of paid service | Limited during the lock period |
| Straight Talk or Total Wireless prepaid from Walmart | Carrier-locked according to the prepaid listing | Do not treat it as an unlocked retail phone |
A financed phone can also be difficult to sell. The account may still owe an installment balance, promotional credits may be tied to the original account, the device may be locked, and the buyer may check whether the IMEI is clean. If you expect to sell or move the phone soon, pay attention to unlock and payoff terms before chasing a low monthly price.
Checkout checklist: prevent the deal from changing
- Choose the exact model and storage. A 128GB iPhone 16 and 256GB iPhone 17 are not equivalent products.
- Set your customer status. Select upgrade, new line, switcher, or port-in accurately.
- Enter the exact trade-in model and condition. Read the final eligibility language rather than relying on the headline.
- Confirm the plan. Record the plan name, line count, Auto Pay requirement, taxes, fees, and included perks.
- Read the credit period. Note whether it is 24 or 36 months and whether paying early ends credits.
- Separate device cost from service cost. Write down the regular device payment, monthly credit, and full plan bill.
- Check lock status. If flexibility matters, buy factory-unlocked or confirm the carrier’s current unlocking policy.
- Save the terms. Screenshot the offer, trade-in estimate, return deadline, gift-card promise, and confirmation number.
- Document the trade-in. Photograph the phone from every side, record it powered on with its IMEI visible, back up your data, remove Find My and the Apple Account lock only after transfer, and retain the shipping receipt and tracking number.
Why an offer can disappear at checkout
A price that appeared on a product page may disappear because:
- the selected plan is not eligible;
- the promotion requires a new line or port-in;
- you canceled a line within a restricted period, such as the prior 90 days;
- the trade-in model or condition does not qualify;
- credit approval changes the down payment or financing;
- the selected color, storage size, or inventory is excluded;
- the promotion is location-specific or personalized;
- the page displayed cached or customer-specific pricing; or
- the promotion cannot be combined with another discount.
T-Mobile’s promotional terms specifically address qualifying credit, service, trade-in, previous canceled lines, and combination restrictions. Similar eligibility rules apply across carriers. If the final checkout does not show the promised credit, stop before submitting the order and ask the carrier to identify the missing qualification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich iPhone should you buy?
- Lowest-cost new iPhone: iPhone 17e at $599 unlocked from Apple.
- Best mainstream value: iPhone 17, especially because its $799 starting price includes 256GB.
- Best large-screen value: iPhone 16 Plus when discounted or included in a family promotion.
- Best thin and light option: iPhone Air.
- Best camera and performance value: iPhone 17 Pro, particularly through a qualifying switcher promotion.
- Best battery and display option: iPhone 17 Pro Max.
- Best deal-dependent option: iPhone 16 or 16 Plus when a retailer or carrier reduces them substantially.
Model choice and deal choice are separate decisions. Do not choose an iPhone 17 Pro Max merely because Verizon or AT&T makes it $0 per month if you would be equally happy with the iPhone 17. Conversely, do not choose the cheapest unlocked model if you need Pro camera features or a large display.
Decision tree for choosing the deal
- Want to keep your current carrier and plan? Start with the carrier’s logged-in upgrade offer, then compare Apple Trade In plus an unlocked Apple or Best Buy purchase.
- Willing to switch and have a valuable trade-in? Compare AT&T and Verizon’s iPhone 17 Pro offers, including the required plan premium and 36-month commitment.
- Want no trade-in? Check T-Mobile’s switcher offers and AT&T’s new-line offers, but price the qualifying plan.
- Need four lines? Compare Verizon’s four-iPhone 16 promotion with T-Mobile’s four-phone offers using the complete family bill.
- Need portability or may leave within two years? Buy unlocked from Apple or Best Buy, even if the upfront device price is higher.
- Need the lowest upfront price? Compare Apple’s $599 iPhone 17e with Best Buy’s displayed $529.99 unlocked iPhone 16e, while checking storage and seller status.
- Already owe money on a phone? Get the payoff and reimbursement terms in writing before porting or trading in.
How these deals were compared
This comparison covers U.S. national and retailer pages checked around August 10, 2026. Prices are generally displayed before taxes and fees unless noted. Carrier offers can change without notice and may be personalized by ZIP code, account, credit approval, plan, line count, storage, trade-in, or inventory. Each offer should be verified in the final checkout.
The ranking gives priority to net device cost, required plan cost, new-line or port-in requirements, trade-in conditions, credit period, lock policy, taxes and connection fees, upgrade flexibility, rebate timing, coverage, included plan features, storage, and whether an existing customer can actually receive the offer. That is why a $0-per-month carrier phone and an unlocked $529.99 retail phone are not automatically comparable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest current iPhone?
The cheapest current-generation iPhone sold directly by Apple is the iPhone 17e, starting at $599 with 256GB. A carrier or retailer may make another model cheaper after bill credits, a new line, a trade-in, or a gift card.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a free iPhone really free?
Usually it is free only after monthly promotional credits. You may still pay taxes on the full retail price, activation or connection charges, and a higher-priced service plan. Leaving early, changing to an ineligible plan, or paying off early can stop future credits and leave a device balance.
Which carrier has the best iPhone deal right now?
There is no universal winner. AT&T and Verizon lead for some switchers with qualifying trade-ins, especially on the iPhone 17 Pro family. T-Mobile has strong no-trade-in switcher offers on qualifying Experience plans. The best choice depends on plan cost, coverage, line count, trade-in, and how long you will stay.
Which iPhone deals are unlocked?
An iPhone bought outright from Apple or financed directly through Apple is unlocked. Carrier-financed phones may be locked until paid off or until the carrier’s current unlock conditions are met. Best Buy’s unlocked listings can also be flexible, but verify the listing’s seller and lock status.
Should I buy the iPhone 16 or iPhone 17?
The iPhone 16 starts at $699 with 128GB, while the iPhone 17 starts at $799 with 256GB. The iPhone 16 is attractive when discounted substantially or included in a family promotion; otherwise, the iPhone 17 is usually the stronger storage-adjusted value.
The Bottom Line
The best iPhone deal is the one whose conditions fit your actual life. Choose AT&T or Verizon’s Pro promotion if you are switching, have a qualifying trade-in, and will keep the required plan for 36 months. Check T-Mobile if you want a no-trade-in switcher deal and its Experience plan makes sense. Choose Apple or Best Buy unlocked if you value portability, may change carriers, or can save more through a cheaper service plan. Always calculate the phone, plan premium, taxes, fees, trade-in, credits, and lock period together.
