Checked August 16–18, 2026: AT&T and Verizon both advertise up to $1,100 off selected iPhone 17 models, but neither headline is an instant discount. The savings usually arrive as 36 monthly bill credits tied to a qualifying trade-in, plan and account status. Verizon may be the better new-customer choice when its no-trade-in offer applies; AT&T can be compelling for an existing customer with an eligible high-value trade-in. Apple is usually the better fit if you need an unlocked phone or may leave your carrier before three years.

AT&T’s indexed pages display different maximums for the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone Air—$700, $830 and, for Pro models, $1,100. Treat those figures as offer-specific rather than a universal discount. See AT&T’s iPhone deals and AT&T Wireless Offers.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: up to $1,100 off
AT&T advertises up to $1,100 in credits on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with an eligible trade-in. If the phone’s financed amount is no more than the credit, the device installment can work out to $0 after all credits post. You still pay wireless service, taxes calculated on the phone’s full retail price, and any activation, upgrade, protection or accessory charges.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The offer normally requires an eligible unlimited plan and a trade-in meeting AT&T’s model, condition and value rules. The exact plan name, minimum trade-in value, new-line requirement and credit amount must be read in the live checkout flow; the available offer pages do not establish one set of terms for every customer.
iPhone 17 and iPhone Air
AT&T also promotes discounts on the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Indexed offer versions show maximums of $700 or $830, so do not assume the Pro-level $1,100 credit applies. Select your exact storage capacity, enter your account details and record the credit shown before submitting the order.
Existing customers, switchers and business lines
- Existing customers: An upgrade offer can depend on your account, current plan and device-payment status.
- Switchers: A port-in or new-line requirement may apply, and any remaining balance on your old phone may still be due.
- New lines for current customers: Adding a line is not the same as upgrading an existing line; verify which action triggers the promotion.
- Business accounts: Business promotions can have separate eligibility and billing rules.
Read the written order summary rather than relying on a verbal promise in a store. AT&T says credits can begin within several billing cycles and continue over 36 months.

Verizon’s plan materials reference Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Ultimate. The highest credit can be tied to a particular tier, and the line generally must remain on a qualifying plan for the full promotional term. Check Verizon’s iPhone offers, Verizon Deals and the promotion shown in My Verizon.
$1,000-off Pro offer without a trade-in
Verizon’s listed promotion includes up to $1,000 off an iPhone 17 Pro without a trade-in when you add a new line on Unlimited Ultimate. This is a specific new-line offer, not a blanket rule for Verizon’s iPhone deals. Confirm that it is still displayed for your ZIP code and account before switching.
Watch and iPad bundles
Verizon also promotes an iPhone 17 bundle with an Apple Watch and iPad. “Free” or discounted hardware can require separate service lines, activation charges and an eligible plan. Count those recurring lines for all 36 months; a bundle is valuable only if you wanted the additional devices anyway.
Personalized upgrade offers
Verizon says existing-customer promotions can vary by account and appear in My Verizon. Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome documentation also describes upgrade eligibility rules. A public advertisement may therefore not match the offer available on your line.

What “free iPhone” really costs
A carrier’s “free” phone is usually a financed device whose installment is offset by monthly promotional credits. Credits may take one or two billing periods at Verizon, or several billing cycles at AT&T, to appear.
- Credits stop if you cancel the line, leave the carrier or move to an ineligible plan.
- Paying off the device early can end future credits unless the promotion explicitly says otherwise.
- You may owe the remaining device balance when the promotion ends early.
- Taxes are commonly charged on the phone’s full retail price, before credits.
- Activation or upgrade fees, insurance, accessories and plan charges are separate.
For perspective, a $1,099.99 phone financed over 36 months is about $30.56 per month before credits. An $1,100 credit would offset approximately that installment, not the wireless plan or other charges. A $829.99 phone is about $23.06 per month, and a $999.99 phone is about $27.78 per month, before credits.
AT&T versus Verizon in three common situations
Existing customer with a high-value trade-in
Request the personalized upgrade quote from both carriers. If each shows roughly $1,100, compare the required plan’s 36-month cost, taxes, fees, coverage where you live and any lost legacy-plan discount. The carrier with the larger credit is not necessarily cheaper if its plan costs more each month.
New customer switching carriers
Verizon may have an advantage if the $1,000 no-trade-in Pro offer applies and Unlimited Ultimate’s price fits your budget. AT&T may win when your trade-in qualifies for its top credit and you would select its eligible plan anyway. Include port-in requirements and any payoff of your current phone.

No trade-in
Look first for Verizon’s specific no-trade-in new-line promotion. Otherwise, compare Apple’s full price with the carrier’s ordinary installment price; do not treat a trade-in headline as available when you have no qualifying device.
Trade-in checklist before you ship a phone
- Confirm the exact model, storage capacity and stated condition in the offer.
- Check whether the promotion requires a minimum trade-in value and whether the old phone must be paid off.
- Back up your data, erase the device and disable Find My/Activation Lock.
- Photograph the phone’s condition, serial number and packaging before shipment.
- Follow the carrier’s shipping deadline and keep the tracking receipt.
- Monitor the first several bills and contact the carrier promptly if the promised credit is missing.
Verizon distinguishes special promotions that accept a device in any condition from its general trade-in guidance, which generally requires a phone to power on, have no cracked screen or battery damage and have Activation Lock disabled. Do not apply the “any condition” rule unless your specific promotion states it. AT&T’s model list and thresholds are likewise offer-specific; verify them at AT&T Trade-In.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens to your old device payment plan?
A new promotion normally does not erase the remaining balance on your existing phone. You may need to pay that balance before sending the device back, unless a separate payoff or switcher promotion explicitly covers it. Early-upgrade programs are different from ordinary trade-in offers. Obtain the payoff amount and written instructions before ordering.
When buying directly from Apple is better
Apple’s direct purchase gives you an unlocked phone and avoids a carrier’s 36-month credit lock. It is often preferable when you may switch carriers, travel internationally, want to sell the phone privately, have a low-value or damaged trade-in, or do not want a more expensive unlimited plan.
Best Value
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).

Apple lists direct pricing, Apple Trade In and carrier-connected payment options separately on its iPhone purchase page. Indexed Apple estimates range approximately from $35 to $695 depending on the old device and configuration; live values can change after inspection. The immediate Apple credit may be smaller than a carrier’s promotional credit, but you retain flexibility and avoid the risk of forfeiting future credits.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose AT&T when its personalized trade-in credit beats Verizon after including 36 months of plan costs. Choose Verizon when its no-trade-in new-line offer or a wanted bundle offsets the higher plan commitment. Choose Apple when an unlocked phone and the freedom to change carriers matter more than the largest advertised credit.
