T-Mobile is the strongest starting point for an iPhone Air discount, AT&T advertises the largest headline savings on eligible iPhone 17 Pro models, and Apple is the clearest choice if you want an unlocked phone without a long carrier-credit commitment. These are not equivalent offers: the largest discounts depend on specific models, trade-ins, plans and monthly bill credits, and carrier promotions can change without notice.
Which iPhone 17 or iPhone Air deal is best?
“Best” depends on whether you mean the lowest phone price, the lowest total cost, or the most flexibility. Start with the offer that matches your model and customer status, then compare the required wireless plan and credit term—not just the advertised savings.
| Your situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want the biggest iPhone Air discount | T-Mobile | T-Mobile advertises iPhone Air on us after qualifying trade-in credits. The exact credit depends on the device and eligible plan. |
| You want the largest headline discount on a Pro model | AT&T | AT&T advertises up to $1,100 off eligible iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models with qualifying trade-in and service. That maximum is not the standard iPhone 17 or iPhone Air offer. |
| You want a standard iPhone 17 and can trade in a phone | Compare your carrier’s model-specific offer with Apple Trade In | Carrier promotional value may exceed Apple’s trade-in estimate, but it is typically spread over monthly credits and tied to service. |
| You need an unlocked phone or use prepaid/MVNO service | Apple direct | Buying from Apple with “connect to any carrier later” avoids relying on a carrier promotion for the device discount. |
| You have no trade-in or may leave your carrier soon | Compare a no-trade-in new-line offer with Apple’s outright price | A required higher-cost plan or lost future credits can outweigh a large advertised phone discount. |
As of the verification date, no sufficiently clear current official Verizon promotion was established for a direct comparison. Best Buy lists carrier-activation offers, including Verizon offers, but those retailer listings are not a substitute for checking Verizon’s own checkout terms. See Best Buy’s iPhone 17 and iPhone Air listings and verify any Verizon offer directly before ordering.
What the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air cost at Apple
Apple’s listed prices provide a useful baseline against which to measure a carrier deal. The iPhone 17 price depends on how you buy it; the iPhone Air price depends on storage.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| Model | Storage | Apple listed price |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 | 256GB baseline | $799 with carrier activation |
| iPhone 17 | 256GB baseline | $829 when connecting to a carrier later |
| iPhone Air | 256GB | $999 |
| iPhone Air | 512GB | $1,199 |
| iPhone Air | 1TB | $1,399 |
Prices are from Apple’s iPhone shopping page, iPhone 17 buying page and iPhone Air buying page. Taxes, shipping and any applicable fees are additional. Compare the storage tier you actually need: a credit that covers a 256GB model does not necessarily make a higher-capacity Air inexpensive.
How the carrier offers compare
T-Mobile: strongest starting point for iPhone Air
T-Mobile advertises the iPhone Air “on us” after eligible trade-in credits on a qualifying unlimited plan. The headline is not an immediate price reduction: the value is generally delivered through monthly bill credits, so leaving or otherwise ending eligibility early can mean losing future credits while still owing the remaining device balance.
T-Mobile’s deal page gives trade-in examples of up to $1,100 for an iPhone 15, up to $830 for an iPhone 13 and up to $500 for an iPhone 6. These are model-specific examples, not a promise that every condition or account receives the maximum. “Any condition” language does not waive ownership, device-identification, activation-lock or other eligibility rules. Some offers also state a $35 device connection charge.

The page’s iPhone 17 offer has its own requirements, including qualifying credit, a port-in from an eligible carrier, a new voice line and a qualifying plan of $85 per month or more with AutoPay, plus taxes and fees. Do not assume these iPhone 17 terms are identical to the iPhone Air promotion; check the model-specific terms at T-Mobile’s Apple iPhone deals page.

AT&T: separate Pro savings from standard-model offers
AT&T advertises up to $1,100 off the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max with an eligible trade-in and qualifying postpaid unlimited plan. That maximum does not apply automatically to the standard iPhone 17 or iPhone Air. AT&T lists lower promotional tiers—up to $700 or approximately $830 depending on the particular offer, model and trade-in tier—for eligible iPhone 17-series and Air models. Check the model and trade-in requirements at AT&T Wireless Deals; its iPhone 17 announcement describes the Pro promotion.
AT&T’s offer page indicates that some higher trade-in tiers require an iPhone 14 Pro Max or newer, or a qualifying smartphone meeting a minimum trade-in value; lower tiers can have different requirements. Promotional value is generally applied over the installment term rather than paid in full at checkout. Verify the required plan, installment length, trade-in value and whether an upgrade or new line is needed for your exact offer.

Apple: pay a clear device price and keep more flexibility
Apple advertises $195–$695 in trade-in value toward an iPhone 17, iPhone Air or iPhone 17 Pro when trading in an iPhone 13 or newer. The actual estimate depends on the exact model, storage and condition, and is not necessarily equal to a carrier’s promotional trade-in value. See Apple Trade In and iPhone offers.
Apple advertises 0% APR Apple Card Monthly Installments over 24 months and also offers the iPhone Upgrade Program, which includes AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss and allows an upgrade after the applicable payment threshold. Confirm current eligibility and terms on Apple’s iPhone Air purchase and carrier information page. Apple says an iPhone bought directly from it is generally unlocked; phones financed through AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon installment programs can remain carrier-locked until paid in full. Apple’s connect-later pricing is higher than its carrier-activation price for the iPhone 17 listed above.
Best Buy: retailer checkout is a separate comparison
Best Buy lists carrier activation deals for iPhone 17-series models and iPhone Air. Its surfaced listings include up to $1,100 off eligible Pro models with AT&T activation and trade-in, up to $830 off iPhone 17 with T-Mobile activation and qualifying trade-in, and Verizon offers involving eligible old or damaged devices on select myPlan options. Inventory, retailer incentives and activation terms may differ from direct carrier or Apple checkout. Compare the final terms at Best Buy rather than treating a retailer listing as a carrier-wide guarantee.

Find the lowest real cost, not the biggest discount
Compare the whole period you expect to keep the phone and service. A practical formula is:
Total cost = device payments after credits + required plan cost + activation/device fees + taxes and fees + accessories − trade-in value − gift cards.
For a carrier switch, compare the new plan with the plan you would otherwise keep. For an existing customer, use the incremental cost of changing plans, not the full bill if the service was already necessary.

Illustrative plan-cost example
Suppose a carrier offers $1,100 in credits but requires a plan that costs $25 more per month than your current plan for 36 months. The extra plan spending is $900, leaving about $200 of the advertised phone savings as a net benefit before taxes, fees and other differences. This is an illustration, not a quoted carrier offer. If you leave after 12 months, roughly $733 of the advertised credits would still be unearned under a 36-month schedule, and the remaining phone balance may become due.
Also account for the sales tax charged on the device price, any down payment, the first month of service, activation or device connection charges, and whether you must send the trade-in by a deadline. An offer is only cheaper if its net value survives those costs and the service commitment.

If you already have T-Mobile
- Check that your current plan qualifies and whether the specific offer permits an upgrade on your existing line or requires a new line.
- Compare the exact trade-in tier for your phone with the monthly credits shown at checkout.
- Include any remaining balance on your current device and any unpaid promotional credits.
- Do not change plans until you confirm the promotion remains eligible on the replacement plan.
If you already have AT&T
- Check which device tier applies; the $1,100 maximum is for eligible Pro models, while standard iPhone 17 and Air offers are lower.
- Confirm the qualifying unlimited plan, installment duration, upgrade status and whether the credit is monthly.
- Compare the extra plan cost, if any, with the total promotion before trading in your phone.
If you are switching carriers
Evaluate the carrier offer against the cost of switching, not just against the phone’s retail price. Include the new plan’s monthly premium, port-in and new-line requirements, activation charges, any remaining old-phone payments and any loyalty discounts you would lose. A $1,100 credit can be a poor trade if the new plan costs $20–$40 more per month for 36 months; that difference totals $720–$1,440 before fees.
If you have no trade-in
Look for a clearly stated no-trade-in new-line offer, but verify the line, plan and credit terms at checkout. Secondary coverage has reported an AT&T iPhone Air offer around $4.43 per month with a new unlimited line and no trade-in; that is not a universal device price, and the required service may cost more than the phone savings. Compare it with paying Apple’s listed device price or trading in through Apple. A discounted phone on a costly plan may not lower your total bill.
If you use prepaid service or an MVNO
Apple’s connect-later purchase is often the more straightforward comparison because carrier promotions may require postpaid unlimited service, port-in or a new line. The upfront phone price can be higher than a carrier-activation price, but retaining a lower-cost plan can make the total cheaper and preserves more carrier choice.
Quick Recap
Check these terms before placing an order
- Credit schedule: Is the discount instant, a trade-in value at checkout, or a promotion paid as monthly bill credits? Confirm the number of months and the credit amount shown in the final order.
- Leaving or paying off early: Ask whether canceling, porting out, changing plans or paying off the phone stops future credits. A remaining device balance may be due even when earlier credits were received.
- Trade-in eligibility: Confirm the exact model and tier, condition rules, ownership and payoff status, IMEI eligibility, and any deadline for mailing or returning the phone. “Any condition” does not necessarily mean any device qualifies.
- Trade-in protection: Before sending a phone, photograph its condition, record its identifying details, remove activation lock, and keep the shipping receipt and tracking information.
- Plan and account requirements: Check whether the offer is for existing customers, upgrades, new lines or port-ins; whether AutoPay is required; whether the account needs credit approval; and whether employer, military, senior, student or loyalty discounts can be combined. The available offer information does not establish universal stackability for those discounts.
- Upfront charges: Check sales tax on the full device price, down payment, activation or device connection fee, shipping and required first-month service. Promotional device savings generally do not make the plan free.
- Lock status: Confirm whether the phone will be unlocked at purchase or remains locked until its installment balance is paid. This matters if you travel, use a second carrier or expect to switch.
- Availability: Offers may be limited-time, account-specific or subject to inventory. No universal end date is established here; use the live terms and checkout summary before ordering.
Make the decision in this order
- Choose the exact model and storage capacity, then note Apple’s full price for that configuration.
- Identify the offer’s customer type: existing-line upgrade, new line, port-in or trade-in.
- Confirm the qualifying plan, AutoPay and credit requirements, trade-in tier and credit duration.
- Calculate device cost plus the plan difference, taxes and fees over the period you expect to remain with the carrier.
- Choose the carrier offer only if its net savings justify the service and lock-in; otherwise compare Apple’s connect-later price and trade-in estimate.
