The best 2023 hybrid depends on what you need it to do. The Toyota Prius is the efficiency-focused hatchback; the Honda Accord Hybrid is a spacious midsize sedan; and the Honda CR-V Hybrid is a compact SUV. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Kia Sportage Hybrid are credible alternatives, while the Ford F-150 PowerBoost and Lexus RX 350h serve buyers who need a truck or a luxury SUV. These are U.S.-market 2023 model-year picks, so shoppers today should compare used examples rather than treat original sticker prices as current values.

Best 2023 hybrid vehicles at a glance

Best for Model Reported fuel economy What stands out
Efficiency and hatchback versatility 2023 Toyota Prius 49–57 mpg combined, depending on configuration Available AWD, hatchback body and improved acceleration over the prior generation; rear headroom is limited, and the engine can be noisy when running. Edmunds editorial coverage carried by AP.
Midsize sedan 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid 48 mpg combined in EX-L; 44 mpg in Sport, Sport-L and Touring Roomy rear seat; the EX-L is the most efficient listed trim. American Honda’s 2023 model information.
Midsize sedan alternative 2023 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 47–52 mpg combined, depending on trim Comfortable and easy to drive, according to Edmunds coverage; cabin materials and highway noise are drawbacks. Honda’s manufacturer comparison and Edmunds coverage carried by AP.
Compact SUV 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid 40 mpg combined in Sport 2WD; 37 mpg in listed AWD hybrid trims Trim and drivetrain affect efficiency. American Honda’s 2023 model information.
Compact SUV alternative 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid 43 mpg combined FWD; 38 mpg AWD 227-hp hybrid system, cargo room, ride comfort and technology; Edmunds coverage says it could be sportier. Edmunds editorial coverage carried by AP.
Truck utility Ford F-150 PowerBoost 25 mpg combined for the cited 2WD configuration A hybrid pickup option for buyers who need truck capability. Edmunds editorial coverage carried by AP.
Luxury SUV Lexus RX 350h 36 mpg combined A luxury-SUV choice rather than a direct substitute for a compact car or sedan. Edmunds editorial coverage carried by AP.

Fuel-economy figures above are published ratings reported in the cited sources, not a guarantee of what a particular used vehicle will achieve. Honda’s pricing page states: “Based on 2023 EPA mileage ratings; Use for comparison purposes only; your mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle, driving conditions and other factors.”

Which 2023 hybrid gets the best gas mileage?

The Prius leads this shortlist on reported combined economy, at 49–57 mpg depending on configuration, according to Edmunds coverage carried by AP. The range matters: a single “Prius mpg” figure would hide variation among configurations. Among the cited sedan trims, the Sonata Blue is rated at 52 mpg combined in Honda’s comparison, while the Accord EX-L is rated at 48 mpg combined by Honda.

Use city, highway and combined ratings together when comparing specific trims. For example, Honda lists the Accord EX-L at 51/44/48 mpg city/highway/combined, and the Sport, Sport-L and Touring at 46/41/44. Honda’s comparison lists the Sonata Blue at 50/54/52 and the SEL and Limited at 45/51/47. The highway rating is higher for the Sonata Blue, but the combined figure is the more useful single estimate for mixed driving.

Best hybrid by body style and buyer need

For an efficient hatchback: Toyota Prius

Choose the 2023 Prius if fuel efficiency and a hatchback layout are your priorities. Edmunds’ AP-carried review reports 49–57 mpg combined by configuration, available all-wheel drive and better acceleration than the preceding generation. It also notes limited rear headroom and engine noise when the engine is running, so a test drive with rear passengers is worthwhile.

For a midsize sedan: Honda Accord Hybrid

The Accord Hybrid is the strongest sedan pick in this group for buyers who want a larger rear seat. Honda’s U.S. model-year comparison lists 40.8 inches of rear legroom in the Accord, versus 34.8 inches in the Sonata. Honda gives the Accord hybrid system 204 horsepower. Its 2023 EPA ratings vary by trim: EX-L is 48 mpg combined, while Sport, Sport-L and Touring are 44 mpg combined.

Honda listed original MSRPs from $31,345 to $37,340 across the cited Accord trims, before destination. Those are historical launch-era prices, not estimates of current used-car value.

For another midsize sedan option: Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The Sonata Hybrid is worth comparing if you value comfort and efficiency. Honda’s manufacturer comparison lists the Blue trim at 50/54/52 mpg city/highway/combined and SEL and Limited at 45/51/47. It lists 192 horsepower, compared with 204 for the Accord. Edmunds’ AP-carried assessment describes the Sonata as comfortable and easy to drive, while identifying cabin-material quality and highway noise as compromises.

For a compact SUV: Honda CR-V Hybrid

The CR-V Hybrid fits buyers who want an SUV body style. Honda reports 40 mpg combined for the Sport 2WD and 37 mpg for the Sport AWD and Sport Touring AWD. Its cited original MSRP range was $32,450 for Sport 2WD to $38,600 for Sport Touring AWD, before destination. As with the Accord, those are original prices for the 2023 model year, not current used-market guidance.

For an alternative compact SUV: Kia Sportage Hybrid

The Sportage Hybrid offers a different compact-SUV option, with Edmunds reporting 43 mpg combined for front-wheel drive and 38 mpg for AWD. The reviewed hybrid system produces 227 horsepower. Edmunds highlights cargo room, ride comfort and technology, but says the driving experience could be sportier. Its reported launch starting MSRP was $28,815, a historical figure rather than a current used price.

They address distinct needs—truck utility and a luxury SUV—so neither is a like-for-like efficiency alternative to the Prius, Accord or compact SUVs.

How trim and drivetrain change the comparison

Do not compare models using a single headline MPG figure when the trim or drivetrain differs. Honda’s listed CR-V Sport rating falls from 40 mpg combined in 2WD to 37 mpg in AWD trims. The Sportage Hybrid’s reported rating similarly falls from 43 mpg in FWD to 38 mpg in AWD. If all-wheel drive is important, compare AWD versions rather than using the most efficient front-wheel-drive figure to estimate your likely fuel use.

Equipment and pricing also vary by trim. The Accord EX-L has a higher combined rating than the other listed Accord Hybrid trims, while Honda’s original MSRP range spans more than $6,000 before destination. For a used car, check the exact trim, drivetrain and equipment on the vehicle listing and confirm them against the vehicle itself.

How to choose a used 2023 hybrid

  1. Start with the body style. Pick a hatchback, sedan, compact SUV, pickup or luxury SUV based on passenger and cargo needs; these categories are not direct substitutes.
  2. Compare the exact configuration. Match trim and drivetrain, then compare city, highway and combined ratings where the source provides them.
  3. Evaluate the trade-offs in person. Check rear-seat comfort, noise, cargo access, ride quality, available technology and driving response. The published reviews identify specific compromises, but your priorities and tolerance may differ.
  4. Assess the actual used vehicle and local deal. Compare mileage, condition, service history, local asking prices and availability listing by listing. Original MSRP does not establish what a used example should cost today.

Edmunds’ AP-carried story says, “In many cases, the price difference between hybrid and non-hybrid models is small enough that the hybrid will pay for itself or save you money after just a few years of ownership.” That is a broad editorial statement, not a model-specific savings calculation or a guaranteed payback period. Whether a particular used hybrid makes financial sense depends on its price, condition, fuel use and the buyer’s driving.
