The first listing’s displayed size range does not tell you which size will fit a particular child. Compare the current product chart with the child’s measurements rather than relying on age or the size label alone. Sleeve shape, print, hem details, fiber content, and care instructions are also useful points of comparison.
How to choose a fit and design
- Check measurements: Use the current size chart for the specific gown and compare it with your child’s measurements. Do not assume that a size number or age range guarantees a fit.
- Choose the preferred style: The examples range from a sleeveless ruffle design to short flutter sleeves. Consider the child’s preference and the garment’s listed construction.
- Read materials and care information: Check fiber content and care instructions on the current listing and garment label.
- Confirm purchase terms: Verify current stock, price, and return policy with the retailer before ordering.
What U.S. sleepwear safety information means
In the United States, a nightgown intended primarily for sleep or sleep-related activity may be covered children’s sleepwear. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) considers factors including construction and style, suitability and likely use, marketing, and fabric features when determining whether a garment falls within the rules. Covered sleepwear generally includes sizes 0 through 14; sizes 0 through 6X are addressed by 16 C.F.R. part 1615, and sizes 7 through 14 by part 1616. Covered sleepwear must meet applicable flammability requirements or qualify as tight-fitting sleepwear under separate measurement and labeling provisions. CPSC says manufacturers and importers must certify compliance with the applicable standard based on testing by a CPSC-accepted laboratory. A retailer’s statement that one garment is flame resistant is a claim on that product page, not independent confirmation of laboratory testing and not evidence about other gowns. The cited retailer listings were not accompanied here by inspected test certificates. Check the product listing, garment label, and available manufacturer or seller documentation for relevant sleepwear information.

CPSC notes that untreated 100% cotton, silk, rayon, and modal typically fail the children’s sleepwear tests in parts 1615 and 1616. That guidance is not a blanket determination about every garment made from those fibers: qualifying tight-fitting and infant garments can be subject to different rules, and individual products require their own assessment.
