1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best starting combination for most people is one broad freelance marketplace, one remote job board, and one profession-specific platform. For example, start with Upwork for project-based work, FlexJobs or We Work Remotely for remote contract or employment opportunities, and a specialist option such as Toptal, Contra, 99designs, or Wellfound.
This is an updated guide, not a snapshot of 2022. Platform fees, names, screening procedures, and job inventories change frequently. A recommendation that was accurate in 2022 may now have different pricing or may serve a different type of worker. The current comparison below was checked against platform information available on August 9, 2026.
Quick comparison: the best freelance and remote-work websites
These websites are not interchangeable. Upwork and Fiverr are primarily freelance marketplaces; FlexJobs and We Work Remotely are job boards; Toptal is a vetted talent network; and Wellfound focuses on startup hiring. Choose according to the type of work you want, not simply the number of listings.
| Website | Platform type | Best for | Beginner fit | Freelancer cost | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upwork | Proposal marketplace | Broad project, hourly, and fixed-price work | Good for skilled beginners | 0%–15% per contract; Connects cost $0.15 each | Competition and proposal costs |
| Fiverr | Gig or service marketplace | Clearly packaged, repeatable services | Good if the offer is narrow | Seller receives 80% of the order value | Price pressure and review dependence |
| Toptal | Curated talent network | Senior technology, design, finance, and consulting work | Poor fit for most beginners | Review the platform’s current agreement; selection is the main barrier | Lengthy, selective screening |
| FlexJobs | Paid remote and flexible job board | Screened freelance, contract, part-time, and remote employment listings | Good if seeking a job | Subscription required for job-seeker access | You pay even though it is not a payment marketplace |
| We Work Remotely | Remote-first job board | Remote employee and contract roles | Varies by role | Check current access terms; applications usually go to employers | Not a managed freelance marketplace |
| Wellfound | Startup hiring marketplace | Technology, product, growth, and startup jobs | Best with relevant experience | Review the current listing and hiring terms | Startup and compensation risk |
| Contra | Portfolio, contracts, invoicing, and payments platform | Independent creatives with a portfolio or existing clients | Better for proven freelancers | Commission-free freelancer model; client and processing fees may apply | Less useful if you have no portfolio or network |
| 99designs | Design contests and direct projects | Branding, logos, packaging, illustration, and web design | Possible, but contests are risky | 5%–15% platform fee plus possible new-client introduction fee | Speculative contest work |
| Freelancer.com | Bid, hourly, fixed-price, and contest marketplace | Broad alternative to Upwork | Possible, but bidding is competitive | Fixed-price: 10% or $5, whichever is greater; hourly: 10% | Complex fees and variable listing quality |
| Guru | Quotes and structured agreements | Recurring, hourly, fixed-price, and task-based work | Reasonable secondary option | Listed job fees range from 5% to 9%, depending on membership | Membership and bid allowances complicate comparisons |
Fees and prices are subject to change. “Free” can mean free registration but still involve commissions, proposal credits, withdrawal fees, currency conversion, or payment-processing charges.

- Need broad freelance projects? Start with Upwork.
- Can you turn your skill into a clearly defined package? Try Fiverr.
- Are you a senior specialist? Apply to Toptal, and consider Contra or direct client outreach.
- Want a remote job rather than individual clients? Use FlexJobs, We Work Remotely, Remote.co, Wellfound, LinkedIn, or Indeed.

- Already have a portfolio and some clients? Contra can provide contracts, invoices, discovery, and payment tools without charging the freelancer a percentage commission under its commission-free model.

Freelance marketplace, gig site, or remote job board?
The label “remote work website” covers several different business models. Understanding the difference prevents a common mistake: joining a job board when you actually need clients, or joining a bidding marketplace when you really want stable employment.
Freelance marketplaces
A freelance marketplace lets a client post work or search freelancer profiles. The platform may provide proposals, messaging, contracts, time tracking, milestones, escrow or payment processing, reviews, and dispute procedures. Upwork, Freelancer.com, Guru, and PeoplePerHour fall broadly into this category.
You normally operate as an independent business: you find the client, agree on scope, deliver the work, and handle your own tax, insurance, equipment, benefits, and nonbillable time.
Gig or service marketplaces
On a gig marketplace, you publish a defined service and the client orders it or requests a custom offer. Fiverr is the clearest example. This works well for repeatable deliverables such as a logo concept, a blog edit, a short video, a voice-over, or a WordPress fix. It is less suitable when every engagement requires extensive discovery and custom consulting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remote job boards
A remote job board lists full-time, part-time, temporary, contract, or freelance openings. You usually apply to the employer, and the board may not handle your contract, payment, time tracking, or disputes. FlexJobs, We Work Remotely, Remote.co, and Working Nomads fit this model.
A remote employee may receive payroll withholding, paid leave, and benefits. A contractor generally does not. Read the classification, location, and compensation details instead of assuming that “remote” means self-employed or work-from-anywhere.
Curated or vetted networks
A vetted network screens freelancers before matching them with certain clients. Toptal says its process includes language and communication assessment, skill review, live screening, and test projects. It says the process typically takes three to eight weeks and that approximately 3% of applicants are accepted. Those figures are Toptal’s own claims, not an independently audited measure of the labor market. Screening can improve the quality signal, but it does not guarantee work or income.
Detailed reviews of the leading platforms
1. Upwork: best broad starting point for many freelancers
Upwork combines client-posted jobs, freelancer proposals, hourly contracts, fixed-price milestones, Project Catalog services, and direct-client contracts. It covers writing, editing, programming, design, marketing, virtual assistance, customer support, finance, accounting, and consulting.
As of this update, Upwork says the freelancer service fee is 0% to 15% per contract. The exact percentage appears before you submit a proposal or accept an offer and is fixed when the contract starts. Proposals and some promotional features use Connects, which Upwork says cost $0.15 each. If you bring an existing client through Upwork Direct Contracts, the platform advertises a separate 5% freelancer service fee. Check the current service-fee explanation, Connects rules, and Direct Contracts terms before pricing.
Upwork is often the best default recommendation for a skilled person who is new to freelancing because it offers many categories and both hourly and fixed-price formats. But account creation is not a job. New freelancers must compete with established profiles, spend time tailoring proposals, and account for Connects and platform fees.
Use Upwork when: you can show relevant samples, write targeted proposals, and work within a platform-managed contract.
Avoid relying on it when: you are unwilling to bid, your service is impossible to scope, or you expect the platform to provide automatic income.
2. Fiverr: best for productized services
Fiverr lets freelancers create “Gigs”—predefined services with packages, prices, delivery times, revisions, and optional extras. Suitable services include logo and graphic design, video editing, voice-over, translation, copywriting, social-media work, presentation design, WordPress services, and small website tasks.
Fiverr’s current payment terms state that sellers receive 80% of the purchase amount, so the platform retains 20% of the seller’s order value. The same 80% rule applies to completed hourly-contract reports. Standard earnings generally become available after a 14-day safety-clearance period following completion; the stated period is generally seven days for Top Rated Sellers and hourly contracts. Withdrawal-provider and currency-conversion charges may also apply. See the payment terms and earnings guidance.
Fiverr is no longer accurately described as a website where every job costs $5. Its useful feature is the ability to sell a repeatable outcome without writing a new proposal for every order. The risk is that vague packages invite scope creep, while an artificially low introductory price can be difficult to raise.

- Broad Compatibility: Besign LS03 Laptop Mount is compatible with all laptops from 10''-15.6'', such as Air 13, Pro 13 / 15 / 2018 / 2017 / 2016, Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell, HP, ASUS, Chromebook, and other notebooks.
- Ergonomic Design: This LS03 Laptop Stand could elevate your laptop by 6’’ to a perfect viewing level, help you improve your posture and reduce neck and shoulder pain. This laptop stand is super easy to detach and assemble.
- Stable And Protective: This laptop stand is made of premium Aluminum alloy, it is sturdy, support up to 8.8 lbs(4kg), no worry any wobble at all; the rubber on the holder hands sticks tightly, ensure your laptop stable on the stand and prevent any scratches.
- Keep Laptop Cool: the open aluminum design provides good ventilation and airflow to prevent your laptop from overheating. It folds flat if you need to store it, create extra space on your desk and keep your desk clean and organized.
- Easy to Use: thanks to the detachable design, you could assemble it very easily it 3 steps.
Make a Gig specific: “I will edit a 1,000-word SaaS blog post for clarity and grammar” is stronger than “I will do writing.” State exactly what the buyer receives, what is excluded, how many revisions are included, and when delivery occurs.
3. Toptal: best for experienced specialists
Toptal is designed for a narrower group: senior software developers, product managers, designers, finance professionals, project managers, and consultants. Its screening process is the point of differentiation, but it also means that Toptal is not a practical first stop for someone who is still learning the profession.
Applicants should expect assessment, interviews, and test work over a process Toptal says usually lasts three to eight weeks. Passing the screening creates access to a talent network; it does not promise a particular client, rate, or volume of work.
Use Toptal when: you have substantial professional evidence and can tolerate a selective application process.
Do not choose it as your only plan when: you need immediate work, have few samples, or want small low-budget tasks.

4. FlexJobs: best for screened flexible and remote jobs
FlexJobs is a paid job board rather than a marketplace that manages your freelance deliverables and client payments. FlexJobs says its team hand-screens listings and excludes scams, junk listings, commission-only opportunities, and multi-level-marketing opportunities. Screening lowers exposure to obvious junk, but it is not a guarantee that every employer, salary, or role is right for you.
Its pricing page currently lists:
- 14-day access: $2.95, then automatic renewal at $23.95 every four weeks;
- Three-month plan: $29.85 upfront;
- Annual plan: $71.40 upfront.
Prices, promotions, renewal terms, and availability can change, so check the current pricing page before subscribing. FlexJobs makes the most sense for someone seeking part-time, contract, freelance, or full-time remote work and who values screening enough to pay for access.
5. We Work Remotely: best remote-first job board
We Work Remotely focuses on distributed-company roles across development, design, marketing, customer support, operations, and related fields. It is useful for both employees and contractors, but it is not a traditional freelance marketplace: applications generally go to the employer, which handles hiring and payment.
We Work Remotely says it launched publicly in 2011 and averages more than 1,000 new positions per month. That is a company-published, time-sensitive platform statistic, not a guarantee of available work in your category.

6. Wellfound: best for startup and technology roles
Wellfound is a startup-focused hiring platform for software engineers, product managers, designers, growth and marketing professionals, and startup operations workers. It is the successor to AngelList Talent: AngelList Talent became Wellfound in November 2022, and the move from Angel.co to Wellfound.com was completed in March 2023.
Wellfound’s remote tools can expose remote preferences, salary, equity, and time-zone requirements. The platform says more than 27,000 startups hire through it; that figure is dynamic and company-reported. See Wellfound’s overview and remote candidate page.
Startup opportunities can offer direct access to founders and valuable equity upside, but they also carry higher business risk. Examine cash compensation, vesting schedules, benefits, funding, location restrictions, and whether equity is being used to replace an otherwise inadequate salary.
7. Contra: best for portfolio-led independent creatives
Contra combines portfolio discovery with contracts, invoicing, and payment tools. It is especially relevant to designers, brand strategists, creative developers, writers, marketers, video professionals, and other freelancers who already have a strong portfolio or clients to bring with them.
Contra describes its freelancer model as commission-free. Its pricing page separately lists client platform fees and paid plans: the free plan’s listed client platform fee is capped at $29 per payment, while Contra Pro is listed at $199 per year or $29 per month. Third-party payment-processing fees may still apply. “Commission-free” therefore does not mean that every participant pays nothing. Confirm the current mechanics at Contra pricing and its independent-worker workflow.

Contra is a strong complement to, rather than a universal replacement for, Upwork. It is more attractive when you can use a portfolio and network to generate demand instead of bidding for every project.
8. 99designs: best for design-specific work, with a spec-work warning
99designs serves logo, identity, packaging, illustration, web, app, book-cover, and apparel designers through contests and one-to-one projects. Designer levels affect the platform fee: the listed rates are 15% at Entry Level, 10% at Mid Level, and 5% at Top Level.
New-client work may also involve a 20% introduction fee on the first $500, capped at $100. The introduction fee may be waived in certain situations, including winning or becoming a finalist in a contest with that client or inviting a new client through the platform’s invitation process. Review the platform-fee, introduction-fee, and designer-level pages.
Contests can require unpaid speculative work. A designer may spend hours producing a concept and receive nothing if it is not selected. Direct one-to-one projects are generally easier to evaluate on scope and compensation. Use contests only if you consciously accept that risk and the terms do not grant the client broader rights than you intend.
9. Freelancer.com: a broad alternative marketplace
Freelancer.com supports bids, hourly projects, fixed-price projects, contests, and recruiter-style services. Its categories are broad, making it a possible alternative when another marketplace is not producing suitable leads.
The current fee page lists 10% or $5, whichever is greater, for fixed-price projects and contests, and 10% for hourly projects. Withdrawal, transaction, membership, and optional bid-promotion fees may also apply. Compare the whole fee schedule at Freelancer.com’s fees page before accepting a low-value project.

Guru supports quotes, fixed-price milestones, hourly tracking, recurring payments, and task-based agreements. Its current pricing information lists job fees from 9% at the basic level down to 5% at the highest listed membership level. Membership cost, bid allowances, and the job fee need to be considered together. Guru’s SafePay system is designed to hold employer funds before work begins, subject to its terms.
PeoplePerHour supports project proposals, hourly or project work, protected payments, and fixed “offers.” It says freelancers are reviewed before approval. It can be worth testing for web development, design, writing, and marketing, particularly for UK- and Europe-oriented work. Do not rely on an old fee figure; check its current fee information before publication or signup.
Best websites by profession
Writing and editing
Start with Upwork for proposals and repeat client work, Fiverr for defined editing or copywriting packages, and ProBlogger, FlexJobs, Remote.co, LinkedIn, or direct outreach for contract and employment opportunities. A niche offer—such as SaaS blog editing, technical documentation, newsletter production, or book copyediting—will usually be easier to evaluate than “general writing.”
Software and web development
Use Upwork for a broad range of projects, Toptal for senior-level work, Wellfound for startups, We Work Remotely for remote employment or contracts, and Contra for portfolio-led client acquisition. Codeable and other technology-specific networks may be useful where your platform access and specialty match their requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Graphic design and branding
Consider Contra, 99designs, Upwork, Fiverr, Behance, and Dribbble. Use 99designs selectively: direct projects and contests are not economically equivalent, and contest work is speculative.
Marketing and social media
Upwork, Contra, Fiverr, FlexJobs, Remote.co, LinkedIn, and direct agency outreach cover both project and employment models. Define the deliverable—such as a monthly content calendar, paid-search audit, or campaign report—instead of promising vague “marketing help.”
Translation and language work
Upwork, Freelancer.com, PeoplePerHour, TranslatorsCafe, and specialized localization agencies can provide different mixes of short projects, recurring work, and employment. State your language pair, subject-matter expertise, editing direction, and whether you offer machine-translation post-editing.
Virtual assistance and administration
Upwork and Fiverr are useful for client projects, while FlexJobs, Remote.co, LinkedIn, and specialized virtual-assistant agencies are better places to look for ongoing or employment-like roles. List the tools you know, availability, time zone, response window, and exact administrative tasks.
Startup and product roles
Wellfound is the most directly startup-focused choice in this list. Also consider LinkedIn, Toptal, We Work Remotely, and direct applications on company websites. Carefully compare employee, contractor, and equity arrangements.

How to choose the right platform
- Choose small, predefined services: Fiverr is a natural fit.
- Choose broad project bidding: Upwork or Freelancer.com offers more formats.
- Choose senior, specialized work: Toptal or a specialist network may provide a stronger quality signal.
- Choose a remote job instead of clients: Search FlexJobs, We Work Remotely, Remote.co, Wellfound, LinkedIn, and Indeed.
- Choose startup work: Wellfound is more relevant than a general gig marketplace.
- Choose portfolio-led client work: Contra is designed around presentation, contracts, invoicing, and payments.
- Choose design contests: 99designs can expose you to design clients, but only if you accept the possibility of unpaid speculative work.
Do not create ten empty profiles. Start with two or three channels that match your work model, complete them properly, and measure qualified conversations rather than raw applications.
How to get your first freelance job
1. Decide what kind of work you want
Before opening accounts, choose among one-off tasks, repeatable services, hourly projects, fixed-price projects, retainers, temporary contract employment, and full-time remote employment. This decision determines whether you need Fiverr, Upwork, FlexJobs, or a remote job board.
2. Build proof before applying
A useful profile should contain:
- a specific service headline;
- three to six relevant work samples;
- a short explanation of the problem each sample solved;
- deliverables and turnaround time;
- a starting price or rate;
- the type of client you serve;
- your availability and time zone; and
- professional contact and payment details.
Self-initiated samples are acceptable when they are clearly labeled as such. Never present a fictional project as paid client work or copy another person’s portfolio.
Recommended Free Tools
“I can do anything” is a weak beginner position. A narrower offer is easier to price and trust. Examples include:
- editing SaaS blog posts for clarity and structure;
- adding captions to short-form videos;
- fixing WordPress bugs;
- redesigning business presentations;
- cleaning up bookkeeping records;
- writing customer-support documentation; or
- building social-media content calendars.
3. Search narrowly and apply selectively
Use specific searches such as technical writer API documentation, Shopify product-description writer, React accessibility audit, short-form video editor SaaS, bookkeeping cleanup QuickBooks, or remote contract customer support US.
Do not apply to every listing in your category. Proposal costs, unpaid sales time, and the risk of accepting a poor-fit client make indiscriminate applications inefficient. A good proposal should show that you understood the client’s problem, identify one relevant example, state your approach, ask one useful question, and make the next step easy.
4. Verify the client or employer
Before accepting work:
- review hiring history, payment history, and feedback where the platform provides it;
- search the company independently;
- verify the company domain and recruiter identity;
- confirm that pay is proportionate to the requested work;
- check country, time-zone, tax, and work-authorization requirements;
- avoid requests to move payment off-platform before a contract exists; and
- reject large unpaid tests or custom work that the client could use commercially.
5. Put the scope in writing
Every project should identify the deliverables, number of revisions, deadline, client inputs, payment schedule, ownership or licensing, additional-work rate, cancellation terms, communication method, and approval process.
For fixed-price work, use milestones rather than accepting one vague promise to pay at the end. Do not begin a major milestone until the platform’s applicable funding or protection conditions are satisfied. Payment-protection features are subject to platform rules and are not the same as an unconditional payment guarantee.
6. Turn a completed project into repeat work
After a successful delivery, ask whether the client needs a monthly retainer, recurring batch of deliverables, maintenance, reporting, ongoing support, or a referral. The strongest long-term outcome from a platform is often a repeat client and a stronger portfolio—not permanent dependence on a bidding feed.
Follow the platform’s rules before taking a relationship elsewhere. For example, Upwork has conversion rules and a conversion fee for certain off-platform relationships; review its current conversion-fee policy before suggesting an off-platform arrangement.

- unpaid proposals, tests, or contests; and
- income tax, self-employment tax, software, equipment, insurance, and nonbillable time.
For a simple platform-fee estimate:
Required client price = desired net after platform fee ÷ (1 − platform fee rate)
For example, if you want to receive $500 after a 20% platform commission:
$500 ÷ 0.80 = $625
A $625 order would leave $500 after that commission, before taxes and other costs. This calculation does not account for Fiverr’s clearance period, withdrawal fees, currency conversion, proposal costs, or any taxes.
Also distinguish freelancer fees from client fees. Contra’s commission-free freelancer model can still include client platform fees and payment-processing mechanics. FlexJobs’ subscription is an access cost, not a percentage deducted from your freelance invoice. 99designs’ platform and possible introduction fees have different triggers. Read the agreement that applies to the specific transaction.

Remote work is not always work-from-anywhere
A job can be fully remote and still be limited by country, state, payroll availability, tax registration, employment law, client-data restrictions, work authorization, contractor classification, time-zone overlap, or occasional travel.
Wellfound exposes remote preferences and time-zone requirements. Remote.co distinguishes among fully remote, hybrid, location-limited, freelance, temporary, and part-time roles. Inspect those fields before investing time in an application.
For U.S. readers, an independent contractor generally reports business income and may owe self-employment tax and estimated quarterly payments. A 1099-NEC is not, by itself, the legal test of contractor status. The IRS says classification depends on factors including behavioral control, financial control, and the relationship between the parties. See the IRS guidance on who is an independent contractor and Form 1099-NEC and contractor questions. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
Scams, unpaid work, and other failure modes
Remote-job scams
Never pay to get a job or to get paid. Be especially cautious if someone asks you to:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- deposit a check and send part of the money back;
- pay for equipment, training, certification, or access to guaranteed jobs;
- buy gift cards, cryptocurrency, or supplies from a specified vendor;

- complete repetitive “optimization” or task work after depositing money;
- communicate only through unexpected texts, WhatsApp, Telegram, or generic email accounts; or
- accept unusually high pay for trivial work without a normal interview or contract.
The FTC warns that fake remote recruiters may impersonate real companies, use fake checks, promote task schemes, or request money. Search for the employer independently and contact it through a verified website or company-domain address rather than relying only on a recruiter-provided link. Report suspected fraud through the FTC’s remote job scam guidance.
Unpaid spec work
A short, standardized skills test can be reasonable. A finished article, marketing plan, business strategy, brand concept, or custom code that the client could use commercially is a deliverable and should generally be paid. This is particularly important with design contests, where several freelancers may work without compensation and only one submission wins.
Payment holds and delays
“The client paid” does not always mean “the money is immediately withdrawable.” Fiverr’s terms, for example, include a safety-clearance period after completion. Platforms may also delay funds because of disputes, chargebacks, identity checks, or withdrawal processing. Keep enough cash reserves to handle clearance periods and never accept a project whose costs depend on an immediate payout.
Account suspension
Platforms can restrict or close accounts for identity inconsistencies, multiple accounts, off-platform payment requests, copyright violations, misleading portfolio claims, attempts to circumvent fees, chargebacks, or sharing prohibited contact details before a contract. Keep copies of contracts, invoices, deliverables, and communications, and do not assume that a platform guarantees permanent access to future work.

The original “best freelance websites 2022” framing is now historical. The largest changes a reader should know are:
- Upwork’s fee schedule changed. Upwork’s 2022 standard schedule was generally 20% on the first $500 billed to a client, 10% on the next $9,500, and 5% above $10,000. That historical schedule should not be copied into a current comparison; Upwork now states a 0%–15% freelancer service-fee range by contract. The older figures are documented in its 2022 annual filing.
- AngelList Talent became Wellfound. The transition began in November 2022 and the move from Angel.co to Wellfound.com was completed in March 2023.
- Fiverr is not a $5-only marketplace. Services now span much higher prices and can include packages, custom offers, and hourly contracts, while the seller’s standard share remains 80% under its current payment terms.
- Portfolio-led platforms matter more to some freelancers. Contra’s current model emphasizes portfolio discovery, contracts, invoicing, and commission-free freelancer payments rather than traditional proposal bidding.
- Remote job categories are more clearly separated. A remote listing may be an employee position, temporary role, contract engagement, or freelance assignment—and may still have geographic and time-zone restrictions.
Older comparison articles can still help identify familiar names, but their fees, pricing, platform labels, and availability require current verification. Marketing claims such as “top 3%,” “largest,” registered-user counts, and job-volume figures should be attributed to the company and dated rather than treated as independent performance measures.
A practical two-week starting plan
- Day 1: Choose one service and one target client type. For example, “technical editing for SaaS companies,” not “all writing.”
- Days 2–4: Create three to six samples, label self-initiated work honestly, and write a profile focused on client outcomes.
- Days 5–6: Open one marketplace profile and one remote-job-board profile. Read their fee, communication, payment, and off-platform rules.
- Days 7–10: Apply only to closely matched opportunities. Track the listing, client, proposed scope, price, fee, time spent, and result.
- Days 11–14: Improve the profile based on response quality, not just application volume. Add a specialist platform only if it matches your profession and experience.
After the first project, document the result, request an honest review or testimonial, and propose a recurring service where appropriate. The goal is to improve your positioning and client quality—not to accumulate empty profiles or chase every listing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which freelance website is best for beginners?
For someone new to freelancing but already capable in a profession, Upwork is a strong broad starting point, while Fiverr works well for a narrow, repeatable service. Contra can help if you already have a portfolio. Someone who is new to the profession itself should build skill and proof first; no platform removes the need to demonstrate reliable ability.
Which freelance websites are free?
Upwork is free to join but may charge for Connects and completed contracts. Fiverr does not require a seller signup fee, but sellers receive 80% of completed order value. Contra promotes commission-free freelancer payments, although client platform and payment-processing fees can apply. FlexJobs requires a paid subscription, and 99designs is free to sign up but charges platform and possible introduction fees.
Is remote work the same as freelance work?
No. Freelance work usually means providing services as an independent contractor, while a remote job may be full-time employment with payroll, benefits, and paid leave. A remote contract can fall between those models. Always check classification, location, tax, time-zone, and work-authorization requirements.
Do I have to pay to apply for freelance work?
Sometimes. Upwork proposals use Connects, some job boards charge subscriptions, and platforms may charge commissions or membership fees after work is won. A legitimate employer should not require you to pay for a job, equipment, training, or access to guaranteed employment.
Should I complete an unpaid test project?
Only consider a short, standardized test that cannot be used as a commercial deliverable. A substantial article, marketing plan, design, strategy document, or custom code that benefits the client should be treated as paid work. Be particularly cautious with contests and requests for several free concepts.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal best freelance website. Start with Upwork for broad project work, Fiverr for packaged services, FlexJobs or We Work Remotely for remote job searches, Wellfound for startups, Toptal for senior specialists, Contra for portfolio-led freelancers, and 99designs for design-specific opportunities. Choose two or three channels, price after all fees and unpaid time, verify every client, keep scope and payment terms in writing, and treat “remote” as a work arrangement—not a promise that you can work from anywhere.
