The best free Word-to-PDF tool depends on the file and your priorities. If you already have Word, use its built-in PDF export for the best chance of preserving the document’s layout without uploading it. For a free offline alternative, use LibreOffice or Sejda Desktop. For a quick browser conversion without registration, PDF24 is the strongest choice based on the limits stated on its converter page.
Google Docs is convenient for files already in Drive, while Adobe Acrobat Online, iLovePDF, Smallpdf, and Sejda Web are useful when you also need PDF editing, compression, signing, OCR, or other tools. Online converters are convenient, but they require sending your document to a remote service.
Quick picks
| Best for | First choice | Why | Main drawback |

What is the easiest way to convert Word to PDF?
Use the application that already opens the document whenever possible:
- Have Microsoft Word? Export from Word.
- Already use Google Drive? Open or import the file in Google Docs, then download it as a PDF.
- Need a quick one-off conversion? Use an official browser converter such as PDF24.
- Cannot upload the file or need offline processing? Use Word desktop, LibreOffice Writer, or Sejda Desktop.
A dedicated website is often unnecessary if Word is already installed. Native export avoids an additional rendering engine and keeps the document on your device.

Best free Word-to-PDF tools compared
Microsoft Word: best overall for Word-authored files
Word desktop is the sensible first choice for résumés, contracts, school assignments, invoices, and other files created in Word. It uses the source application’s own rendering and can export locally, so you do not need to upload the document.
Microsoft’s official instructions cover PDF/XPS export in desktop Office and PDF conversion in Word for the web. The exact labels vary between Microsoft 365, Word 2024, older editions, Windows, macOS, and the web app.
Best for: formatting continuity, privacy-conscious users, and people who already pay for or have access to Word.
Weakness: You need Word access, and custom fonts or unusual embedded content can still produce layout changes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
LibreOffice Writer: best free offline alternative
LibreOffice is free, open-source desktop software that can open Word files and export them to PDF without sending them to a conversion website. It is a strong option for users without Word and for documents that must remain local.
It is not a guarantee of identical Word rendering. Files that depend on Microsoft-specific fonts, complex fields, embedded objects, sophisticated section layouts, or unusual pagination deserve a page-by-page review after export.
PDF24: best no-registration online converter
PDF24’s DOCX converter currently states that it is free, requires no registration, has no time restrictions or stated usage restrictions, and automatically deletes uploaded files and results after one hour. The page also states that its servers are located in Germany. PDF24 offers a separate Windows desktop product, PDF24 Creator.
Those are the converter page’s current statements, not a permanent guarantee. The online workflow remains server-side, so it may be unsuitable for confidential documents or organizations that prohibit cloud processing.

Google Docs: best for Google Drive and collaboration
Google Docs is convenient when the file is already in Drive or needs collaborative editing before conversion. It can import DOC and DOCX files and download the result as a PDF.
Google’s help page gives the standard route and a fallback for very large Google Docs files in Chrome.
Best for: browser-based work, collaboration, and Drive users.
Weakness: importing a Word document into Google Docs can change exact pagination, fonts, advanced fields, section behavior, tables, or specialized layouts. Uploading to Google is also not offline conversion.
Adobe Acrobat Online: best for existing Adobe users
Adobe Acrobat Online accepts DOC, DOCX, RTF, and TXT for Word-to-PDF conversion. Adobe’s online-services FAQ says unauthenticated users may complete one free transaction and download the result once. Adobe also says online files are uploaded to its cloud storage and identifies TLS as a security protocol used by its services.
It makes more sense for people already using Acrobat for editing, signing, OCR, or document workflows than for someone converting one ordinary file and avoiding cloud storage.
iLovePDF: best when conversion is only one step
iLovePDF combines Word-to-PDF conversion with tools for compressing, merging, splitting, signing, OCR, and other PDF tasks. Files can be selected from a device or supported cloud storage such as Google Drive and Dropbox.
Its pricing page currently lists a free plan with limited processing, including one file per Word-to-PDF task and a 15 MB free file-size limit. The page viewed on August 16, 2026 listed Premium at $5 per month when billed annually, or $60 annually. Prices, taxes, promotions, billing terms, and regional availability can change.

Sejda Desktop and Web: best cross-platform offline toolkit
Sejda Desktop supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebook installation routes. Sejda says its desktop application processes files offline, meaning the files do not leave the computer. Its free desktop version is limited to three tasks per day, files up to 50 MB and 200 pages, and one file at a time.
Sejda’s web service is different: files are processed on Sejda’s servers. Sejda says web files are permanently deleted after processing, but online processing is still a different privacy model from desktop conversion.
Smallpdf: best polished browser workflow
Smallpdf supports DOC and DOCX files, imports from Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive, and works through desktop and mobile browsers. Smallpdf says converted files are automatically removed from its servers after one hour; account storage can change that workflow.
Smallpdf promotes preservation of headings, images, tables, and page breaks, but that is a vendor claim rather than an independent guarantee. Check important output yourself, especially when the document contains custom fonts or complex Word features.
How to convert a Word document to PDF
Microsoft Word desktop
- Open the DOC or DOCX file in Word.
- Review page breaks, margins, fonts, headers, footers, tables, images, comments, and tracked changes.
- Select File.
- Choose Save As, Export, or the PDF option. The label depends on your edition and operating system.
- Select PDF and choose standard publishing or printing quality when offered.
- Save the file, open the PDF, and inspect it before sharing.
Look for Export, Save As, or Download as PDF if the menu does not match these labels. Prefer a genuine PDF export over printing when it is available: printing may omit document structure or, depending on the application and driver, create a less useful output.
Word for the web
Open the document in Word for the web and use its download or export option for PDF. Microsoft documents web conversion, but menu names can change. If exact layout matters, compare the result with a desktop Word export.
Google Docs
- Open Google Drive and upload the DOC or DOCX file.
- Open it with Google Docs, or work with it as an Office file where supported.
- Select File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf).
- For a very large Google Doc in Chrome, use File → Print → Destination: Save as PDF → Save.
Use this method when convenience or collaboration matters more than perfect Word pagination.
LibreOffice Writer
- Install LibreOffice from its official download page.
- Open the Word document in Writer and review its layout.
- Choose File → Export as PDF, or use the PDF toolbar button.
- Save the output and inspect the PDF.
Online converters
- Open the vendor’s official Word-to-PDF page.
- Select or drag in the DOC or DOCX file.
- Wait for processing and download the PDF.
- Verify the page count, text, images, links, and formatting.
- Delete the browser download and any cloud copy when appropriate.
Use the vendor’s real domain. Do not install software or browser extensions offered by pop-up advertisements.

Phone or tablet
Word mobile, Google Docs mobile, and browser tools such as Adobe, Smallpdf, PDF24, and iLovePDF can convert files on a phone. App menus differ by Android or iOS version and release. Microsoft documents PDF export on iOS through a File → Export → PDF workflow; on other devices, look for Share, Export, or Send a copy.
For an important résumé, contract, or form, review the PDF on a larger screen before sending it.
DOC versus DOCX: does it matter?
.doc is the older binary Word format. .docx is the newer Office Open XML format. Major services advertise support for both, including Adobe and Smallpdf, but older files deserve extra checking.
Conversion can behave differently when a file contains macros, ActiveX controls, embedded objects, linked content, unusual fonts, legacy formatting, or damage. A macro does not become an executable feature in an ordinary PDF, and a PDF is normally a fixed-layout sharing format rather than an editable replacement for Word.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which tool preserves formatting best?
For a document authored in Word, Word desktop is the most sensible first choice. A practical, conditional preference order is Word desktop, Word for the web, Adobe Acrobat Online or Smallpdf for ordinary files, Google Docs when collaboration is more important than exact Word fidelity, and LibreOffice as the offline alternative.
This is a reasoned workflow recommendation, not a guarantee or an independent benchmark. Output depends on fonts, paper size, margins, document complexity, embedded objects, and the rendering engine.
Before converting
- Set the intended paper size: US Letter and A4 can create different pagination.
- Install or embed required fonts where legally permitted.
- Accept or reject tracked changes intentionally.
- Remove comments and hidden text if they should not appear.
- Update the table of contents and fields.
- Inspect section breaks, page numbering, headers, and footers.
- Check image positioning, tables spanning pages, hyperlinks, bookmarks, equations, and signatures.
Microsoft warns that custom fonts may be substituted during PDF creation, changing the appearance or layout.

Are online Word-to-PDF converters safe?
“Safe” has several meanings. HTTPS or TLS protects the transfer while it is in transit; it does not mean the document never reaches a server, is never stored, or is appropriate for every confidentiality requirement.
Use this privacy hierarchy:
- Local desktop conversion: Word desktop, LibreOffice, and Sejda Desktop.
- Cloud productivity conversion: Google Docs.
- Online PDF converters: Adobe, PDF24, Smallpdf, iLovePDF, and Sejda Web.
Offline is safer for many confidential workflows, but it is not risk-free. Malware, backups, cloud-synced folders, shared computers, and unauthorized local access still matter. For online services, read the current retention and account terms. PDF24 states that uploads and results are deleted after one hour; Smallpdf makes a similar one-hour statement for converted files, with account storage potentially changing the workflow; Sejda distinguishes its offline desktop processing from its web service.
Do not upload government IDs, medical records, financial statements, unredacted legal documents, private keys, passwords, confidential business plans, or files covered by an employer or client confidentiality agreement unless your policy permits that service.
What “free” really means
- Free with no stated usage restriction: PDF24’s converter page currently makes this claim.
- Free but limited: iLovePDF and Sejda impose stated task, file-size, page, or batch limits.
- Limited free transaction: Adobe says unauthenticated users can complete one free transaction and download once.
- Free software: LibreOffice can convert locally, but it does not promise identical rendering for every Word document.
- Free conversion with paid extras: many services charge for editing, storage, signing, OCR, larger files, or batch processing.
- Trial rather than permanent free use: Adobe advertises a seven-day Acrobat Pro trial on its Word-to-PDF page.
For recurring work, compare file size, pages, files per task, daily limits, account requirements, batch conversion, watermarks, and whether downloading requires signing in. Check the provider’s current pricing before paying. For example, the iLovePDF and Sejda prices cited above were shown on August 16, 2026 and may differ by region or later update.

Fonts are missing or changed
The converter may not have the font, the font may not permit embedding, the rendering engine may differ, or the font or document may be damaged. Try Word desktop, replace unusual fonts with common fonts, install the required font locally where legally permitted, and export again.
Page breaks moved
Check Letter versus A4, margins, section settings, font metrics, floating objects, and page breaks. Use the original Word application and compare the document page by page.
Tables or images shifted
Try Word’s native export. Change floating images to a more stable text-wrapping setting, remove unsupported embedded objects, and export rather than taking screenshots or relying on an image-only print workflow.
Text is missing or the PDF is not searchable
A genuine document export should normally contain selectable text. If the PDF is effectively a collection of images, use a proper document conversion workflow. OCR is appropriate when the source itself is scanned or image-based, but OCR can introduce recognition errors.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

An online service rejects the file
Possible causes include file-size or page limits, daily task limits, password protection, corruption, or unsupported embedded content. Try opening and repairing a copy in Word or LibreOffice, or use a desktop converter. Do not repeatedly upload a sensitive original.
Check the PDF before sending it
- Compare the PDF page count with the Word document.
- Check the first, middle, and last pages.
- Confirm the intended paper size and pagination.
- Search for text and select a paragraph.
- Test hyperlinks and bookmarks.
- Zoom into logos, charts, equations, signatures, and small type.
- Check tables, headers, footers, and page numbers.
- Confirm that comments, tracked changes, hidden text, and private metadata are handled as intended.
- Check whether the PDF is accidentally password-protected.
- Open it in a second PDF viewer.
- If accessibility matters, check reading order, headings, tags, alternative text, language, table structure, and link labels.
A visually correct PDF is not automatically accessible. PDF/A and accessibility are separate requirements, and selectable text alone does not prove that a PDF is properly tagged.
Bottom line
Use Microsoft Word if you already have it. Use LibreOffice or Sejda Desktop when the file should stay offline. Choose PDF24 for a fast browser conversion without registration, subject to its current stated policies and the sensitivity of your document. Choose Google Docs for Drive-based collaboration, or Adobe, iLovePDF, Smallpdf, and Sejda Web when conversion is part of a larger online PDF workflow. Whatever tool you choose, open and verify the resulting PDF before sharing it.
