Re:

Best Free Personal Finance Software

The best free personal finance software depends on whether you prioritize automatic account aggregation, envelope budgeting, privacy, accounting, or simple desktop tracking.

“Free” can mean several different things in personal finance software. It may mean no monthly subscription, no charge for account aggregation, open-source code, or simply an app that can be downloaded without paying. Those are not interchangeable.

For most people, Empower Personal Dashboard is the best free option for seeing balances, spending, investments, and net worth in one place. It is not the deepest budgeting tool. If you want envelope budgeting, Goodbudget Free is more suitable. If privacy and local control matter most, choose Actual Budget. For formal accounting, GnuCash is the strongest choice, while Money Manager Ex is a simpler desktop alternative.

The right pick depends mainly on whether you want automatic account connections, hands-on budgeting, privacy, or accounting-level detail.

Best free personal finance software at a glance

Best for Software What makes it useful Main drawback
Connected accounts and net worth Empower Personal Dashboard Free account aggregation, cash-flow tracking, investment analysis, and retirement tools Better for monitoring than detailed budgeting
Envelope budgeting Goodbudget Free Simple envelope system on web, iPhone, and Android One primary account, 20 total envelopes, two devices, and one year of history
Privacy and local control Actual Budget Local-first envelope budgeting with file imports and optional self-hosting Bank syncing requires a server, setup, and a supported provider
Detailed accounting GnuCash Free open-source double-entry accounting for personal and small-business use Steeper learning curve than consumer budgeting apps
Simple desktop tracking Money Manager Ex Free cross-platform checkbook-style tracking with reports and imports Mostly manual or file-import based

1. Empower Personal Dashboard: best for connected accounts

Empower Personal Dashboard is the best fit if your main goal is to get a current overview of your finances without maintaining a local accounting file. Empower says its Personal Dashboard and financial tools are free.

Casio MS-80B Desktop Calculator, Tax & Currency Tools
  • LARGE EIGHT-DIGIT DISPLAY – Clear and easy-to-read 8-digit display, perfect for everyday calculations and ensuring accurate results in home or office settings.
  • TAX & CURRENCY EXCHANGE FUNCTIONS – Effortlessly handle tax calculations and convert home currency to other currencies for easy financial management.
  • GENERAL PURPOSE CALCULATOR – Ideal for a wide range of applications, from basic math to business and personal use, with memory keys for quick storage and recall.
  • USER-FRIENDLY KEYBOARD – Easy-to-use layout, featuring square root, percent calculation, and simple functions that make it perfect for everyday tasks.
  • COMPACT & PORTABLE DESIGN – Space-saving design that fits easily on any desk or in a briefcase, making it ideal for both home and office use.

You can connect checking, savings, credit-card, loan, mortgage, retirement, and investment accounts. The dashboard then brings together transactions, cash flow, balances, portfolio information, and net worth.

What Empower does well

  • Combines multiple financial institutions in one dashboard.
  • Shows spending and cash flow.
  • Tracks investments and portfolio allocation.
  • Includes retirement-planning tools.
  • Provides a convenient net-worth view.

It is particularly useful for someone who wants to answer questions such as “How much do I have across all accounts?” or “How has my net worth changed?” without opening several bank and investment websites.

The important qualification is that Empower is primarily a monitoring and planning dashboard. Its budgeting tools should not be confused with a full envelope budget, detailed accounting ledger, or complete Quicken replacement. People who need extensive category rules, reconciliations, or hands-on allocation will likely find one of the other options more appropriate.

Choose Empower if: you want free automatic account aggregation, investment tracking, cash-flow visibility, and net-worth monitoring.

2. Goodbudget Free: best for envelope budgeting

Goodbudget is built around the envelope method: you assign available money to categories such as groceries, rent, utilities, and annual bills, then reduce each envelope as you spend.

The Free plan is available indefinitely at no charge and includes:

  • 10 regular envelopes.
  • 10 additional annual or goal envelopes.
  • One primary account.
  • Sharing across two mobile devices.
  • One year of transaction history.
  • Debt tracking.
  • Community support.

Goodbudget works on the web, iPhone, and Android. It is a good match for households that want to plan spending deliberately rather than merely categorize transactions after they happen.

The account limitation matters

To add or edit the primary account, go to Accounts → Add/Edit. The free version provides one primary Account. Goodbudget also allows unlimited off-budget Debt Accounts, but those are intended for debt tracking and are not a general replacement for multiple checking, savings, or credit-card accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That creates a practical problem for anyone with several active bank accounts. You may be able to represent the overall budget, but the free plan’s single primary account can become awkward when you need each checking, savings, and credit-card account represented separately.

Canon P23-DHV-3 Printing Calculator with Double Check Function, Tax Calculation, Currency Conversion, White
  • Check your calculations thanks to the calculator's inbuilt serial impact roller printer that enables you to monitor your inputs and retains ongoing records. This two-color printer with a four-key memory prints red and black ink at up to 2.3 lines per second onto the included roll of paper.
  • Printing calculator offers 12-digit LCD display for convenient viewing. 4-key memory keeps often-used figures accessible for faster calculations. Clock and calendar functions help maintain schedules.
  • Easy-to-use solution for all of your basic math needs. Streamline financial calculations with currency conversion, tax calculation, and item counter functions. 1-year manufacturer limited warranty.
  • Dimensions: 2.2"H x 6.4"W x 9.1"D. Package content: AC adapter, paper roll, user manual.
  • Powered by any standard AC outlet, eliminating the need for expensive batteries. Decimal switch, rounding switch, percent, sign change, backspace, double zero, and grand total functions help you solve a variety of mathematical problems.

Free users must import or enter transactions

Automatic bank syncing is not included in Goodbudget Free. Free users need to enter transactions manually or download transaction files from their bank and import them. Automatic syncing with U.S. banks is a Premium feature.

Also remember that Goodbudget separates envelope balances from account balances. An envelope shows how money has been allocated; an account shows where the money physically sits. A mismatch between those views does not necessarily mean the app is wrong—it may indicate that a transfer or transaction has not been recorded correctly.

Goodbudget’s Net Total also has a defined calculation: it adds checking, savings, and cash accounts, then subtracts credit-card accounts. Off-budget debt accounts do not affect that figure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Goodbudget if: you want a straightforward envelope system and can live with manual imports, one primary account, and one year of history.

3. Actual Budget: best for privacy-focused budgeting

Actual Budget is a strong choice for people who want envelope budgeting without committing to a hosted subscription. Its desktop client supports budgets, reports, scheduled transactions, and file import/export. It is local-first, and you can optionally run a server for browser access, mobile use, synchronization, and bank syncing.

Actual supports importing CSV, QIF, OFX, QFX, and CAMT files. The basic import process is:

  1. Open the account.
  2. Click Import.
  3. Select the file.
  4. For a CSV, choose the CSV option and map the fields with the CSV field dropdowns.

For bank syncing, use All Accounts → Bank Sync to sync all accounts, or open an individual account and select Bank Sync. Actual does not automatically fetch new transactions in the background; fetching is a manual action.

Bank-sync setup is not a one-click feature

Actual’s documented providers include SimpleFIN Bridge for North American banks, Enable Banking and GoCardless BankAccountData for European banks, Pluggy.ai for Brazil, and Akahu for New Zealand as an experimental provider in the 26.7.0 release line.

Bank syncing requires actual-server, provider credentials, and a configuration file. This is the key trade-off: Actual can be free as software, but convenient bank syncing may involve a third-party provider and technical configuration.

Amazon Basics LCD 8-Digit Desktop Calculator, Portable and Easy to Use, Black, 1-Pack
  • 8-digit LCD provides sharp, brightly lit output for effortless viewing
  • 6 functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, square root, and more
  • User-friendly buttons that are comfortable, durable, and well marked for easy use by all ages, including kids
  • Designed to sit flat on a desk, countertop, or table for convenient access

Important Actual Budget failure modes

  • Local browser storage is not a reliable long-term setup. Clearing browser storage can delete the data, and this mode does not provide automatic backups or synchronization. Actual does not recommend it for long-term use.
  • The desktop client alone does not provide mobile or browser access. Those features require a server.
  • End-to-end encryption does not cover every secret. Budget data is protected, but bank-sync tokens are stored separately and can be readable by a server administrator or hosting provider with database access.
  • A lost encryption password can be permanent. Actual cannot recover encrypted data if the password is lost and no usable local copy remains.
  • Simultaneous editing can cause conflicts. Avoid editing the same budget file on two devices at the same time.

Actual also distinguishes between on-budget and off-budget accounts. On-budget accounts affect the budget and support categorized transactions. Off-budget accounts are intended for investments, mortgages, and similar tracking; their transactions cannot be categorized in the budget.

Choose Actual Budget if: you value local ownership and privacy, are comfortable managing backups, and can handle technical setup if you need syncing.

4. GnuCash: best for full accounting

GnuCash is free, open-source accounting software released under the GNU GPL. It uses double-entry accounting, making it suitable for detailed personal records, investment tracking, reconciled accounts, and small-business books.

It supports:

  • Income and expense tracking.
  • Bank-account reconciliation.
  • Investment and commodity records.
  • Detailed financial reports.
  • Personal and small-business accounting.

The current stable release is GnuCash 5.16, released June 28, 2026. Official downloads support Windows 8, 10, and 11; macOS Apple Silicon 11 or later; macOS Intel 10.13 or later; and Linux through distributions or Flatpak.

GnuCash is not the easiest option for someone who only wants a monthly spending chart. You need to understand accounts, transfers, debits, credits, and reconciliation. That learning curve is worthwhile when accuracy and a durable accounting record matter more than convenience.

Older-computer compatibility

  • Windows 7 and macOS 10.12 or earlier: GnuCash 3.11 is the last supported version listed for those systems.
  • Windows XP/Vista and macOS 10.8 or earlier: GnuCash 2.6.21 is the last listed version.
  • PowerPC Macs: GnuCash 2.6.21 is the last version that runs on PowerPC.

Choose GnuCash if: you need double-entry bookkeeping, reconciliations, investment records, or small-business accounting and do not mind desktop accounting software.

5. Money Manager Ex: best for simple desktop tracking

Money Manager Ex (MMEX) sits between a spreadsheet and formal accounting software. It is free, open-source, and cross-platform, with versions for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

MMEX supports checking, savings, credit-card, investment, and asset accounts, along with multiple currencies, scheduled transactions, budgets, cash-flow forecasting, reports, and charts. It can import CSV and QIF files and export QIF, CSV, and HTML. Data is stored in SQLite, and the software offers optional AES/AES-256 encryption. Portable versions can run from removable storage.

To change currency or exchange-rate settings, use:

Tools → Currency Manager…

MMEX is primarily manual or file-import based, rather than an automatic bank-aggregation service. That makes it less convenient than Empower, but also means you are not depending on a cloud dashboard to maintain your financial history.

Software that should not be on a current free-software list

Mint

Mint should not be recommended as a current standalone personal-finance product. Intuit announced that Mint was going away and that its capabilities were being transitioned into Credit Karma. Current Mint pages direct users toward Credit Karma features such as transaction review, spending tracking, and net-worth monitoring.

The old statement that “Mint is the best free budgeting app” describes the former product, not a currently available standalone Mint application.

Quicken Simplifi

Quicken Simplifi is a paid subscription service, not a permanently free personal-finance program. Promotional pricing or a money-back guarantee does not change that. An app-store listing marked Free may only mean that the app can be downloaded without charge; in-app purchases can still be required for the full service.

How to choose the right free option

  1. Need automatic account aggregation? Start with Empower. If you want automatic syncing inside a budgeting system, check whether the relevant paid or self-hosted option fits your needs.
  2. Want to assign every dollar to a category? Choose Goodbudget Free for simplicity or Actual Budget for greater control.
  3. Want your data kept locally? Actual Budget, GnuCash, and MMEX are better starting points than a cloud dashboard.
  4. Need investment and net-worth monitoring? Empower is the easiest option; GnuCash is better for maintaining detailed records.
  5. Need formal accounting or business books? Use GnuCash rather than a lightweight budgeting app.
  6. Have an older computer? Check each product’s operating-system requirements before moving your existing records.

Before relying on any free tool, make a backup or export. Free software can still hold years of valuable financial history, and a low price does not guarantee automatic backups, bank connectivity, or data recovery.

For most users, Empower Personal Dashboard is the best free option for connected accounts, spending visibility, investments, and net worth. It is less suitable when you need detailed envelope budgeting or formal accounting.

What is the best free envelope budgeting app?

Goodbudget Free is the simplest choice if one primary account, 20 total envelopes, two devices, manual imports, and one year of history are sufficient. Actual Budget is better for users who want local control and are comfortable with more setup.

Is Actual Budget really free?

Actual Budget can be used without paying for a hosted subscription. Basic local use is available through its desktop client, but browser access, mobile use, synchronization, and bank syncing require a server. Bank syncing also requires a supported provider and configuration.

Is GnuCash suitable for ordinary personal budgeting?

Yes, but it may be more complex than necessary. GnuCash is best when you want double-entry accounting, reconciliations, investment records, or detailed reports. For a quick spending overview, Empower or MMEX is easier to start with.

The Bottom Line

Choose Empower Personal Dashboard for free automatic account aggregation, investments, spending visibility, and net worth. Choose Goodbudget Free for uncomplicated envelope budgeting, as long as its one-account and history limits work for you.
