Vanicream Moisturizing Cream, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, and Cetaphil Restoraderm Eczema Soothing Moisturizer are three options whose manufacturers describe them as fragrance-free, but the available product information does not establish a clinically superior choice or guarantee that any one will suit everyone.
Why fragrance-free is a better label to seek than unscented
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains that an unscented product can still contain fragrance to cover other odors. As the AAD puts it, “Although you won’t smell the fragrance in an unscented product, the fragrance can still trigger a flare-up.” For eczema-prone skin, the AAD recommends fragrance-free products. Read the AAD’s guidance on relieving itchy skin.
Neither “unscented” nor “hypoallergenic” guarantees that a product will not irritate your skin. Labels and formulas can change, so use the current package ingredient list—not just a product name or marketing claim—to check for personal allergens or known irritants. The National Eczema Association (NEA) likewise advises checking ingredients when you know you are allergic or sensitive to a specific one. See the NEA’s moisturizing guidance.

| Product | What the manufacturer says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Vanicream Moisturizing Cream | Vanicream describes it as designed for sensitive skin, fragrance-free, and free of masking fragrances. The manufacturer also reports NEA Seal of Acceptance status. Vanicream product information. | Review the current full ingredient list for your own triggers. The sensitive-skin positioning and seal do not mean the cream has no possible personal irritants. |
| CeraVe Moisturizing Cream | CeraVe describes it as a fragrance-free moisturizer for normal-to-dry face and body skin and reports NEA acceptance. CeraVe product information. | Confirm the current US package label and formulation. The available product page is on a UAT subdomain, so check current manufacturer labeling before relying on its details. |
| Cetaphil Restoraderm Eczema Soothing Moisturizer | Cetaphil describes it as fragrance-free and clinically tested on sensitive skin, and reports NEA acceptance. Cetaphil product information. | “Clinically tested” is a manufacturer claim, not evidence here that it outperforms the other creams. Check the current ingredient list and label. |
The NEA Seal of Acceptance is intended to help people with eczema identify products considered eczema-friendly; it is not a promise that a particular product will work for every person. Acceptance status and product formulations may change.
How to choose a cream that fits your skin and routine
- Start with the label: Prefer “fragrance-free” over “unscented,” and compare the full ingredients with allergens or irritants you already know you have.
- Choose a texture you will use: The AAD recommends creams or ointments rather than lotions for eczema-prone skin. The NEA notes that cream can be an alternative if you dislike the feel of petroleum jelly, mineral oil, or other ointments. A thicker format may feel different from a lotion, so comfort matters for regular use.
- Check where it is meant to be used: Follow the manufacturer’s current labeling for body-area suitability and intended use; do not assume every moisturizer is labeled for every area.
- Apply after bathing: The AAD advises gently patting skin dry and applying fragrance-free moisturizer immediately after a shower or bath. See the AAD’s bathing and moisturizing recommendations.
What these product descriptions can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer descriptions can help you identify products marketed as fragrance-free and intended for sensitive or eczema-prone skin. They do not establish which cream is most effective, least likely to irritate, or best value. No comparative clinical results or current retail prices are established for these three options here, so choose by label, ingredient fit, intended use, and texture rather than treating any one as a proven winner.
