1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no single best extended car warranty plan for every driver: the contract, vehicle, price, and repair rules matter more than the ranking. For this 2024 comparison, Endurance, CARCHEX, autopom!, Omega Auto Care, and Everything Breaks each had a different potential use case; owners of newer vehicles should also price a manufacturer-backed plan. Treat these providers as a starting point, not as current quotes or guarantees of coverage.
Editor’s note: This is a historical 2024 review. Providers can change prices, mileage limits, administrators, state availability, and contract language.
“Extended car warranty” usually means a vehicle service contract (VSC). The Federal Trade Commission distinguishes a VSC from a manufacturer warranty: it is a separate agreement to pay for specified repairs or services, subject to its own exclusions and claims rules.
The right choice depends on the vehicle’s age and mileage, expected repair costs, remaining factory coverage, your state, the contract administrator, deductible, repair-shop rules, and whether you could cover a large repair from savings.

Best extended car warranty plans reviewed for 2024
| Provider or plan type | 2024 editorial fit | Important details to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Endurance | Best overall or broad-coverage candidate | Direct provider in Automoblog’s 2024 study; its sample Supreme contract uses exclusionary coverage and requires authorization before repairs. |
| CARCHEX | Strong option for used cars and customization | Five reported coverage levels, including Titanium exclusionary coverage; many vehicles may qualify up to 250,000 miles. Contracts may be administered by a third party. |
| autopom! | Customer-service-oriented option | 2024 comparison described four coverage levels, terms up to seven years or 150,000 miles, rental-car coverage, and 24-hour roadside assistance. Availability varies. |
| Omega Auto Care | Notable for maintenance-related benefits | A 2024 comparison described benefits such as oil changes and brake-pad replacement on certain plans. Confirm that the specific contract includes them. |
| Everything Breaks | Flexible contract structures | Reported month-to-month options and five protection levels; customer-service reviews were described as mixed. |
| Manufacturer-backed plan | Usually worth pricing first for newer vehicles | Uses the automaker’s contract and dealer network. Compare it with third-party VSCs before buying aftermarket coverage. |
| AAA vehicle protection plans | Regional or member-oriented alternative | AAA offerings differ by club. AAA Club Alliance, for example, advertises certain plans for vehicles up to 12 years old and 175,000 miles, with waiting periods and cancellation options. |
These positions are editorial comparisons, not endorsements. A provider can offer a suitable contract for one vehicle and a poor-value contract for another.
1. Endurance: broad coverage candidate
Endurance was identified as a direct provider rather than a broker in Automoblog’s 2024 study. Its sample Supreme contract is an exclusionary plan: covered components are generally included unless the contract specifically excludes them. That structure is easier to understand than a long stated-component list, but it still does not mean “everything” is covered.
The sample contract also requires the repair facility to obtain administrator authorization before work begins. A shop cannot necessarily repair the car first and expect reimbursement afterward. Check the contract for exclusions involving maintenance, wear and tear, pre-existing conditions, diagnostic charges, fluid contamination, seals and gaskets, and labor-rate limits.
Endurance may suit an owner who wants extensive mechanical coverage and is willing to examine a lengthy contract carefully. It may be a poor fit if the price is high relative to the vehicle’s likely repairs or if you do not have enough cash flow for deductibles and uncovered work.

CARCHEX was a notable 2024 choice for shoppers with older or high-mileage vehicles. A 2024 comparison described five coverage levels, including Titanium exclusionary coverage, and eligibility reaching 250,000 miles for many vehicles.
Older vehicles need especially careful underwriting. A low monthly payment does not make a plan valuable if the contract excludes the components most likely to fail on your car. Ask for the full contract—not only a brochure—and look for the administrator and obligor. CARCHEX sample paperwork identifies American Auto Shield as administrator on certain contracts, meaning the company marketing the plan may not be the entity handling claims.
CARCHEX advertises transferable plans, but transfer conditions, fees, and buyer eligibility are controlled by the individual contract. Get those terms in writing if resale value matters to you.

3. autopom!: customer-service-oriented coverage
The 2024 CARCHEX-versus-autopom! comparison described four autopom! coverage levels, terms of up to seven years or 150,000 miles, rental-car coverage, and 24-hour roadside assistance. These features may appeal to drivers who want more than mechanical-repair reimbursement.

Do not assume that a benefit advertised as “included” is unlimited. Check the daily and per-breakdown limits for rental reimbursement, towing, trip interruption, roadside assistance, and travel expenses. Also confirm whether your state and vehicle qualify before comparing the price with another provider.
4. Omega Auto Care: maintenance-related benefits
Omega Auto Care appeared in a 2024 provider comparison as an option with maintenance-related benefits, including items such as oil changes and brake-pad replacement on certain plans. That feature can make a contract more useful to an owner who values predictable service costs.
Maintenance benefits are not a substitute for major mechanical coverage. Verify the dollar limits, service intervals, eligible facilities, waiting period, and whether the benefit is available on the plan you are actually quoted. A plan with a higher price may not produce savings if you would have paid for routine maintenance anyway.
5. Everything Breaks: flexible payment and contract structures
Everything Breaks was described in a 2024 comparison as offering month-to-month options and five protection levels. Month-to-month billing may reduce the commitment compared with paying for a long contract upfront, but compare the total amount paid over the period you realistically expect to keep the vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
The same comparison characterized customer-service reviews as mixed. That does not determine whether a particular claim will be paid. Read the claims process, identify the administrator, and call a repair facility you trust before enrolling.
Should you choose a manufacturer-backed plan?
If your vehicle is still relatively new, price the manufacturer-backed option before considering an aftermarket contract. A manufacturer plan may preserve access to the automaker’s dealer network and use terms designed around that brand’s vehicles. It is still a contract with exclusions and limits, so read it rather than assuming factory backing makes every repair eligible.

Compare:
- the remaining factory, certified pre-owned, powertrain, emissions, and recall coverage;

- the third-party plan’s administrator, repair network, and exclusions; and
- the total price, not merely the monthly installment.
How to compare coverage levels
| Coverage type | How it generally works | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusionary | Covers components broadly, then lists exclusions. | “Broad” does not cover maintenance, wear, pre-existing problems, or every related part. |
| Stated-component | Covers only the parts specifically named in the contract. | A related component can be denied because it is not listed. |
| Powertrain | Generally focuses on the engine, transmission, and drivetrain. | Electrical, air-conditioning, suspension, technology, and other expensive systems may be excluded. |
For a used car, do not select the cheapest tier without checking the likely failure points for that model. A powertrain plan may not help with an expensive air-conditioning, electrical, suspension, or infotainment repair.
The contract details that determine value
Administrator and obligor
The seller’s name may not be the name responsible for approving or paying a claim. The contract should identify the administrator, obligor, claims telephone number, payment procedure, and any backing or liability coverage. Save the contract and contact information outside your email account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Waiting period and mileage threshold
Coverage may not begin immediately. AAA notes that policies can require both a waiting period and a mileage threshold—for example, 30 days and 1,000 miles. The actual contract controls. This rule is designed in part to prevent people from buying coverage after a breakdown has already begun.
Preauthorization
Before authorizing a repair, the shop generally must diagnose the problem and obtain approval. Ask:
- Who calls the administrator?
- What information must the shop submit?
- Can teardown or diagnostic work begin before approval?
- What happens if the administrator cannot be reached?
- Can the administrator require a second opinion or a particular parts type?
Unauthorized repairs can be denied even when the failed component appears to be covered.
Repair-facility restrictions
“Any mechanic” is not a safe assumption. Some contracts use approved networks, and a shop may refuse to work with a particular administrator. The FTC’s 2024 action involving CarShield alleged that many customers could not use the repair facility of their choice. Before paying, ask your preferred shop whether it accepts the contract and will handle preauthorization.
Deductibles
Find out whether the deductible applies per visit, per repair, or per covered component. Those are materially different. A $100 deductible per repair can cost less than a $100 deductible applied separately to every component involved in one visit. The Endurance sample contract, for example, defines its deductible as applying per covered repair; the contract’s wording controls.

Exclusions and limits
Look specifically for:
- routine maintenance and wear items;
- pre-existing conditions;
- modifications, racing, commercial use, or misuse;
- cosmetic damage and accidental damage;
- fluid contamination and consequential damage;
- seals, gaskets, hoses, and related parts;
- diagnostic charges, taxes, and labor-rate limits; and
- limits on parts, assemblies, or total benefits.
Cancellation and transfer
Do not rely on a salesperson’s statement that you can cancel for a “full refund anytime.” Refund formulas depend on the contract and state law. For example, Endurance’s BBB profile describes a 30-day money-back guarantee and prorated refunds after 30 days. That is not a universal industry rule.
Likewise, transferability may involve a fee, a deadline, and eligibility requirements for the buyer. Obtain the exact procedure in writing.
How much do extended car warranties cost?
There is no dependable universal average. AAA gives a broad estimate of approximately $600 to more than $3,500 per year, while Motor1 has cited a roughly $1,600 to $4,500 range for multi-year coverage. These are broad estimates, not quotes for your vehicle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Providers price contracts using factors such as:
- vehicle make, model, age, and mileage;
- repair history and expected claims risk;
- coverage tier and contract length;
- deductible;
- location and state regulations; and
- payment schedule.
Calculate the full cost this way:
Down payment + every scheduled monthly payment + deductibles + likely uncovered repair costs.
For example, a plan advertised at $95 per month for 36 months costs $3,420 before deductibles. If it also has a $100 deductible per covered repair, that deductible belongs in your comparison. Compare the result with keeping the same money in a repair fund. Consumer Reports has said that its member surveys found owners typically paid more for extended coverage than they received in direct benefits, and recommends considering self-insurance, vehicle reliability, and the contract’s restrictions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When an extended warranty may make financial sense
A VSC may be reasonable when:
- you need predictable monthly expenses;
- the car has expensive, failure-prone systems and you plan to keep it for years;
- you do not have enough emergency savings for a major repair;
- the contract clearly covers the risks you are buying protection against; and
- the administrator and repair process are acceptable to your preferred shop.
Self-insurance may be better when the vehicle is reliable, the quoted contract is expensive, the exclusions are broad, or you already have a sufficient emergency fund. Do not buy simply because a dealer or caller says the offer expires today.
Scam and marketing warnings
An unsolicited “warranty” call is not proof that your dealer or manufacturer contacted you. The FTC warns that callers may imply an affiliation with a dealer or automaker, request financial information, or demand a down payment before providing meaningful contract details. Research the company independently and obtain the contract before paying.

Also avoid using a BBB rating as a substitute for reading the contract. BBB profiles are not endorsements and do not guarantee that claims will be paid.
CarShield requires an additional 2024 disclosure: on July 31, 2024, the FTC announced a $10 million settlement with CarShield and American Auto Shield over alleged deceptive advertising and telemarketing. The FTC later announced more than $9.6 million in refunds to eligible consumers in December 2025. CarShield should not be presented as an ordinary budget recommendation without that context.
Consumer-safety checklist before buying
- Obtain the complete sample contract before paying.
- Confirm the administrator, obligor, claims number, deductible, waiting period, mileage limit, and cancellation formula.
- Check remaining factory, CPO, powertrain, emissions, recall, and other manufacturer coverage.
- Ask your repair shop whether it accepts the contract and will obtain preauthorization.
- Require promises about rental cars, maintenance, roadside assistance, transferability, and repair facilities to appear in writing.
- Compare the total contract cost with a dedicated repair fund.
- Reject unsolicited calls and same-day deadlines. Walk away if the seller will not provide the contract.
FAQ
Are extended car warranties worth it?
Sometimes, but not automatically. Compare the full contract cost, deductibles, exclusions, and likely repairs with the cost of maintaining an emergency repair fund. A VSC is more defensible when it covers expensive risks on a vehicle you plan to keep and you need predictable expenses.
What is the best extended car warranty company for 2024?
There is no universal winner. Endurance was a broad-coverage candidate, CARCHEX suited many used-car and high-mileage shoppers, and autopom! emphasized customer-service features. Manufacturer-backed plans were generally worth pricing first for newer vehicles. The contract—not the ranking—determines coverage.
Can I use any mechanic with an extended car warranty?
Not necessarily. The contract may require an approved facility, and the shop must usually obtain preauthorization before repairs. Ask your preferred repair shop whether it accepts the specific administrator’s contracts before enrolling.
Is an extended warranty the same as a vehicle service contract?
No. “Extended warranty” is common consumer shorthand, but most aftermarket products are vehicle service contracts. A VSC is a separate agreement that covers only specified repairs or services under its own terms, exclusions, deductible, and claims process.
The Bottom Line
For a 2024 comparison, Endurance, CARCHEX, autopom!, Omega Auto Care, and Everything Breaks each had a different potential use case, while manufacturer-backed coverage was usually the first option to price for a newer vehicle. But the provider name matters less than the contract’s exclusions, administrator, preauthorization rules, deductible, repair network, cancellation formula, and total cost.
Request the complete contract, verify that your repair shop will work with it, and compare the total price with keeping the money in savings. If a caller pressures you to pay before showing the terms, decline the offer.
