Based on current manufacturer specifications, the Osprey Transporter Expandable Travel Pack 26+6 is the lightest of these three options and has a compact 26-liter configuration; the Tortuga Expandable Backpack offers a removable hip belt and stated torso fit; the NOMATIC Travel Pack 20L emphasizes organization and briefcase carry. None is guaranteed to fit every airline’s carry-on or personal-item rules, especially when expanded.
How to choose an expandable travel backpack
An expansion zipper can add packing volume, but it can also make a bag deeper. Choose based on the dimensions and carrying setup you will actually use, not just the maximum liter rating.
- Check both configurations. Compare the bag’s external dimensions in compact and expanded mode with the limits for your airline, route and fare. Allowance rules differ, and an expanded bag may be treated differently.
- Consider the loaded weight. The packs below range from 2.11 to 4.1 pounds before you add anything. A lighter bag leaves more of your carry allowance for belongings; a supportive harness may matter more if you walk with a full load.
- Match the access and organization to the trip. A suitcase-style opening makes it easier to pack like a small case; pockets, a laptop sleeve and briefcase conversion may suit work travel. More compartments can help separate gear, but are not automatically better for every packing style.
- Verify laptop fit by dimensions. A stated screen-size limit does not confirm that a particular laptop fits. Check the sleeve’s measurements against the device’s height, width and thickness.

The figures below are manufacturer specifications for the named models, not independent test results. Dimensions are external; the NOMATIC page gives a depth range rather than separate compact and expanded measurements.

Which backpack fits your travel style?
For a lighter compact carry: Osprey Transporter 26+6
Osprey’s listed 2.11-pound weight is the lowest among these three, and the 26-liter compact configuration is the smallest stated starting volume. The pack expands to 32 liters. Its suitcase-style opening, mesh divider and compression strap are useful if you want to organize clothing like a small case, while the stowaway harness and luggage pass-through support different ways of carrying it. Osprey lists compact dimensions of 16.9 × 13 × 7.9 inches; the cited page does not give expanded dimensions, so do not assume that the compact measurements apply when the zipper is open. For a stated torso fit and hip-belt option: Tortuga Expandable Backpack
Tortuga lists 27 liters expanding to 32.5 liters and gives dimensions for both modes. The depth increases from 6.9 to 8.3 inches, while the other listed dimensions remain 19.2 × 12.5 inches. That makes it easier to compare the two configurations with a carrier’s published limits. A removable hip belt and stated 17–19-inch torso fit may appeal if you expect to carry a heavier load on foot. Tortuga says the bag is carry-on compliant on most major airlines even when expanded, but also directs customers to check each airline’s limits; treat the carrier’s current rules as decisive. For organization-heavy work travel: NOMATIC Travel Pack 20L
NOMATIC lists a 20-liter compact capacity expanding to 30 liters, 22 pockets, briefcase-carry conversion and a trolley pass-through. At 4.1 pounds, it is the heaviest of these three listed packs. Its stated dimensions are 18.5 × 12 × 6–9.5 inches; the page does not label the two depth values as precise compact and expanded measurements. NOMATIC warns that the fully expanded 20 L model may be classified as a carry-on, so check the relevant airline and fare allowance before relying on it as a personal item. Will an expanded backpack count as a carry-on or personal item?
There is no universal answer: airlines set their own size and baggage rules, and classification can depend on the carrier, route, fare and packed bag. Compare the external dimensions of the bag in the configuration you plan to use with the airline’s current allowance. If the manufacturer does not publish measurements for both modes, contact it or measure the packed bag rather than treating its liter capacity as a size guarantee.

For an overhead-bin carry-on, check the carrier’s carry-on limit. For an under-seat personal item, check the personal-item limit and the space available on your specific flight. A bag that fits in one configuration may exceed a limit when expanded, and even a published manufacturer claim cannot guarantee acceptance by every airline.

All three manufacturers describe laptop sleeves or compartments for devices up to 16 inches, but that figure alone is not enough to confirm fit. Laptop screen size is measured diagonally; two laptops with the same screen size can have different external dimensions. Compare your device’s height, width and thickness with the compartment measurements, and check whether a protective case will be inside it too. The Osprey page says its direct-zip sleeve fits most laptops up to 16 inches; Tortuga and NOMATIC also state a 16-inch maximum for their respective models.
